Weighing yourself at the doctors office can be important depending on why you are there. The last time I went the nurse seemed generally offended because I would not let her weigh me, I was there for a covid test and nothing more, my weight was irrelevant. She seemed confused because I am what most people would consider small.

they need it for medical reasons but you can always request for a blind weigh in! they weight you but don’t mention the number

I don't let them weigh me. I weigh at home and then tell them that number.

I quit weighing myself 5 or 6 years ago. I also ask my nurses when I go in for doctor's appointments to not tell me what I weigh (and I just recently found out that I don't have to be weighed if I don't want to). My mental health has never been better. My day is no longer dictated by a number on a scale. It has been one of the best things I could ever do for myself. Thank you for making this video and letting other people know it's ok to ditch the scale.

Thank you so much. I totally believe that we should throw away the scale and I did it today. I realize how bad it makes me feel and it is not an actual true depiction of my hard work for that day, or the day before. I’m more than a number and I have to make it about health and stop obsessing about a number. I know thin people who have major health problems and I know overweight people who besides having the extra pounds, are healthy. I will let my body tell me what it needs and it will shed on this all the excess pounds that it does need .

I agree. When I drop 5 pounds I start eating unhealthy again. The scale encourages eating habits for me. But I wouldn’t say throw it away completely

Have not weighed myself since throwing out my scales years ago. A continued life stress that had to go. When my doctor wants my weight I ask why? If I deem it necessary, I ask them not to tell me. It’s often met with incredulity, so thank you for letting me know your views align with mine. I’m so glad I found your channel.

I went searching for this video because I know I’ve developed a habit of getting on the scales every day and my moody determining the number I see. Removed it today and am keen to move forward in this next chapter without a number of the scale defining my whole mood and life. Thank you ❤

I've weighed myself everytime ive gone on a weight loss journey. I have struggled with my weight on and off for my entire life. This time i am doing this solely for my health and i have not stepped on a scale once. Been dieting for about 3 months now (not even sure how long honestly? Im not counting anything) and i dont even know what my starting weight was. I know I'm losing because my clothes are looser and i generally feel better. My goal is not weight loss persay, but health this time.

Listening to this helped me a lot just now, thank you for putting this message out there! It's so psychologically painful dealing with the scale, it takes up way too much mental space. I have not weighed for 1 month, thinking vaguely I'd check in after that, but now it's creeping up on the end of the month and I am really dreading weighing in, not because I don't think I've lost weight (I know I have, my clothes feel looser, I can feel the change when I feel my ribs and stuff), but I do not want to have that number branded into my head for the next month. I know I will start to obsess about the pounds I've lost, from the second I get on the scale. Even if I've done well, over the course of the day my brain will find a way to turn it into something bad, e.g. "I should have lost more though..." or "What if I don't lose as much next month??" The thoughts that come into my head when I use the scale are so nuts. I wish I could just throw it out, but my family all still use it. It's bizarre how much an object is sort of "cursed" lol, how much power it can have is incredible. I guess it's just because it's an objective number, yes, but it's linked to a deep well of emotion inside that relates to not feeling good enough.
@Karim-ik5ij2 жыл бұрын
Im in the department of you should NEVER weigh yourself. There is no use unless you are a competitive bodybuilder or wrestler. That number will fuck with your emotions and subconsciously dictate your life. If you eat decently and exercise and go into a mild caloric deficit, you WILL lose weight. Trust your mirror. Also, studies show that people who are reminded of their good progress actually slow down their gains and become more lenient. If you've been doing it for a while and have no issues with it, ask yourself...why? Unless you don't have a mirror. If you are just starting off, I tell people that scales are for people go on "diets" and don't want to change their life.
@mr.smooth9124 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you from a psychological standpoint. But the main reason why ppl lose weight and gain it right back is because they STOP weighing themselves. The scale is what holds you accountable. As a PT, ppl are afraid of the scale bc they know that their lifestyle isn't aligned with their goals and the scale will highlight that. If they're having trouble losing or gaining weight, then there is something that they're doing wrong and they should HIRE professional help.

I am/was obsessed with my scale… it was so bad I would weigh myself morning, day, night. I know deep down weight fluctuates I know that but my mind wouldn’t get that so I would not eat to see it go down. It was bad decided to keep my scale at my neighbors house and I go once a month lmao I just didn’t want to throw it out and I know they use it so win win

Weighing myself is an important part of my ongoing recovery. If I don't weigh myself, I lose weight because anything I eat makes me feel gigantic. I live with chronic anorexia though, so I have to admit my perception could be disordered since I've not gone without a scale for longer than a week in the past decade. Eating disorders are never one-size-fits-all and think it's not too far-fetched to think some living with anorexia may need the scale to avoid losing weight unintentionally.

I agree so much with this! I’ve had a tumultuous relationship with the scale. I stopped weighing myself in 2018 and was my happiest as I was not obsessing over a number and intuitively ate. However, I recently had my daughter and gained 30 lbs. I bought a scale a couple of months ago and feel stressed since doing so. I have lost weight but it’s because I changed my way of eating. I’m so tired of becoming obsessed over the scale and am done.

Thank you for this valuable insight. I am currently trying to follow a psychology-based weight loss/management/healthy lifestyle and they encourage you to weigh daily. However I work out of town all week and am unable to. Yayy!! (In their defense, they do teach you that weight fluctuates greatly due you the same reasons you mentioned.)

Yes you can absolutly controll your weight. Eat adequately and train adequately and you will preserve your weight and more importantly your muscle mass. Cut calories but eat enough nutrition and protein and keep training you will loose fat. Cut calories brainlessly and you will loose muscle and fat too. Eat lot, train more, gain muscle and small amount of fat Eat lot, and you only get the fat. Not that hard. If its hard propably you are doing it wrong, or you have a medical condition that you should check. For example, it is a huge sign of gluten allergy that you are eating a lot but still cant gain weight

My ideal weight is 47.0 I’m a very short and small person mind you and I weighed myself and it was at 48.2 and it really does put a damper on my day and strict diet planning for the next day. But I don’t know how to stop caring. In a day I fast until 7pm and stop eating at 10pm. I know, I’ve been told multiple times that that’s not healthy.

This goes for Body Comp scales as well, those things are useless. I didnt lose a lb on the scale for 6 weeks & all of my stats were the same (BMI, BF %, etc...) but when I measured myself i had lost 8" all around, including 3 on my waist lol I knew I wasn't crazy when all my clothes were fitting looser & I felt better. Just goes to show that majority of scales are useless.

I wish physicians would stop using that as a parameter of health. For example I lost 20 pounds on weight watchers without exercise so we know that was a specific calorie reduction went to the physician for my annual review they were like great you’ve lost 20 pounds! I start lifting weights eating high-protein feeling great gain the 20 pounds back but still fit in the same size jeans 🙄go back 2 years later…due to pandemic I’m at 160 and they don’t ask what I’m doing they just ask oh are you OK because you’ve gained all your weight back major fail. Um maybe check my waist size🤔

This for sure HAS to be meant for those that attach themselves to the scale or to the number on the scale. We all have a certain healthy weight average that goes with our body type. I have a minimum target of lbs I need to lose. Trust me, I’ll be weighing myself, not only that, I’ll do it everyday, in the morning, before breakfast, after going to the bathroom. If at times the number goes up, it doesn’t matter, you continue eating healthy and working out and at the end of each week get an average weight loss. If there was no loss, make some adjustments or just accept the fact that even for men, our bodies will plateau at times and a different workout or a different meal plan is required. We NEED the scale to gather that information. Not using it is just guessing ourselves to our goal? Hell nah
