It seems to be pretty well established that actual trigger warnings for "traumatic" content just prevent people from ever coming to grips with what they find traumatic. All the eggshell-walking doesn't even _help_ the people it's claiming to want to protect. It just normalizes turning every space with more than one person in it into a minefield. As for history, yeah, you would sometimes think no one was ever happy before about 2011. Heaven forefend an adult have to watch a film _with_ their child, and explain why smoking is a bad habit.

Planet of the Apes shows depictions of human slavery, but the "virtuous" people at Disney thought that the most offensive thing about the film was smoking!? LOL! I am not advocating for trigger warnings about slavery before the movie, but if the film industry is hellbent on treating their audience like children by warning them of any conceivably offensive material, you would think that showing people being treated like chattel would be far higher on your priority warning list than smoking.

If you are fine with the MPAA slapping an arbitrary rating on a film, you should have no issue with a warning at the front of a movie. It is virtually the same thing. The slippery slope is widely considered a fallacy for a reason. The purpose of a warning is that it is in lieu of censorship. Slap as many warnings as you want , just leave the movie alone. Stupid shit like tobacco is a silly reason to have a warning, but there are plenty of legitimate reasons people may want to avoid a film. Being surprised Disney added this is about as dumb as it gets.

I totally agree. I was watching movies with the fam over Christmas and I think we started up "Red One" (My Mom has a thing for the Rock) and there was this warning at the beginning. My Dad asked me what it was about and I said it's for the 'softer than baby shit' people in the world. It might have been "Four Christmas's". Either way, there was some nonsense warning at the beginning. Remember they changed ET with the shotguns to radios.

It's not just the US. Watched Lawrance of Arabia on terrestial TV here in the UK and it was announced that the film contains racist language and outdated attitudes. Why must we treated like children? It's effectively a war film set during the first world war, but beautifully shot and acted and it's ruined by this, 'this may upset you', comment at the beginning.

Years ago my local cable channel was playing the movie WONDER BOYS. There was a scene where Michael Douglas smokes a cigarette outside- they blurred the cigarette for the entire scene. FYI- The gay sex scene that followed, was not censored in any way.
