Chasing cats, cars, birds and stealing other dog's balls etc can be a real problem. In this video I demonstrate How to stop your dog stealing other dog’s balls with a lead, treats and a ball. However once you know how to get your dog to control their impulses through treats, desensitisation, distraction, lessons and correction, the lessons are similar whatever the issue.

This is currently what I'm working on with my year old dog. It is a challenge because the chase following his steal becomes a lot of fun for him. He stops obeying any instruction once he has the ball.

Fortunately my dog is so focussed on his own ball, he doesn't notice other dogs around, as he can be reactive, but several times we've had one run in to steal his ball! I always have a back up now to avoid it getting ugly and just carry on throwing and hope the original one comes back!

amazing techniques. wish I could bring you my dog. for the most part he is a good dog, however, I am constantly correcting him around other dogs when we are on leash. in off leash dog parks he is fine. what kind of harness does Dante wear? it is interesting to watch you use it

My dog goes ape over any ball he can't have, like people playing ball on the beach. Gets frustrated and goes nuts by the second or third throw. Totally have to remove him from the stimulus. I didn't realize it took so many lessons to correct. I would calm him and bring him back and boom all over again. Thanks for checking my expectations! Lol

Great tips, my dog does the same , her trouble is she doesn't want the other dogs ball, she loves the chase from the other dogs as she takes their ball! Should I follow the same method?

My dad just had to pay on the spot for a mini chuck it my dog stole and lost somewhere in the mud. He seems to love those but he will steal anything that is thrown to other dogs. Having a really hard time teaching him to 'leave it', 'drop it', and even 'come' doesnt work once he has access to whatever he has stolen.

Thanks will try this as soon as possible, having a 8 month Rottweiler steal your football in the park and run away with it isn't the best look! She will return a stick but she is obsessed with balls... hopefully this helps :)

Best of luck Henry. It certainly will but It can take time and needs much careful management of the environment i.e don't go too close to the balls until he understands what to do from a distance. Then be sure to outwork him.

My kelpie was an EXTREME ball thief. I contacted Nigel and he helped me make a plan of how to deal with it. We are three weeks in and my dog is doing brilliantly. Please don't give up, you can do it if you have the right plan and tons of patience :)

Thats something similar to my 1 in a half year old golden doodle the owners wanted the ball back we tried everything to get her to drop it and she wouldn’t to no matter what I did she wouldn’t drop it and she started getting aggressive when I took it away towards me and the other dogs and nipped one of the owners. I can’t take her there anymore Try to avoid going there in the early mornings when they are there she doesn’t know how to behave and don’t want to be Liable if anything happens

@@briancalifornia1 definitely concerning for you and right (for the moment) to avoid busy periods. What Nigel taught me was how to show consequences of behavior to my dog. We had to go all the way back to walking in park on lead. As soon as he went for a ball we left the park. Walk over. You’ve done something I don’t want to see and so your walk ends. Once he cracked that we then did exactly the same but on a long lead. Then after 2 weeks his short lead which I didn’t hold. It’s now been 12 weeks and he can walk round a busy dog park and although he will occasionally take a dogs ball he will drop on command as he knows if he doesn’t he’s going straight home. It’s not always been easy and some days very frustrating but we’ve persevered and now it’s a joy to take him out again. Good luck!

I wish more people would teach their dogs this! It’s becoming so frustrating taking my dog to the dog beach to swim and every time having other dogs steal his toy. It ruins the whole trip for us. Mine is old and a bit arthritic so we’re there to exercise without stressing his joints plus have fun and these dogs stealing his toy make things miserable. Today the owners thought it was funny making comments like “swim faster” to mine.

Why do you repeat the command to the dog so often? I was taught that you say the command once and you correct until the dog responds to your original command. I'm not saying you're doing anything bad/wrong - just trying to understand. Thanks!
