Why didn't the plaintiff ask for bank statements and proof of payment for rent and vendors BEFORE giving him the money. He basically went into a partnership without any details. While morally I think the plaintiff is owed the money I also think he should have only got half back as a learning lesson to do the homework before going into business with someone.

@@XxsorafanBut I don’t see any reason to get a storage unit if all that is in it is junk. I had a storage unit for awhile and it had furniture and appliances in it. Also possible that the renter died and no one knew or cared about the unit.

This is on both sides, of course mostly on the defendant. Research what you are getting into. Make sure the rent is current. Business is actually there. I'm a contractor, person wanted to sell me his painting business, about 14 employees working in three different subdivisions. He want $80 K up front and 20% for one year. Looked good, sounded good. Only as I began to dig and talk to his 'clients', I discovered all the busy subdivisions that he told me he had sewn up, he only had a couple houses, so he had no upcoming work after the few houses, no signed contracts, maybe 2 months left on current work. I confronted him, WTF was I buying? "his good name." No I buy a company, I am paying for ready made clients, not a name and some run down equipment.
