In "The Legacy Of Skateboarding Tricks That Can't Be Landed | Leap Of Faith | El Toro" we ask the question, what is the appeal of skateboarding tricks that weren't landed?! It's interesting...in a sport such as baseball, if you hit a Game 7 World Series Home Run Game-Winner and it gets robbed at the wall, you are forgotten. If you compare that to analogy to skateboarding, if you at least tried and ALMOST hit that home run, you are a hero. Why do you think that is? Is this proof that skateboarding is truly NOT a sport? Is breaking down barriers and boundaries in Skateboarding not relatable to any other culture? Will some of these tricks EVER be actually landed? We asked various pros their take and pinpointed notable famous tricks that were never landed; such as the Jamie Thomas "Leap Of Faith", Nyjah Huston and Ryan Sheckler attempting Backside Flip down El Toro 20, Chris Joslin attempting 360 flip down el toro, Heath Kirchart's iconic massive kickflip as well as his insane Lipslide and Ali Boulala vs the Lyon 25 stair in France. The video also features Aaron "Jaws" Homoki trying Heelflip down el toro and Dane Burman trying to Hardflip El Toro. Interviews include, Paul Rodriguez, Torey Pudwill, Ryan Sheckler, Chris Cole, Jamie Thomas, Jamie Foy, Dane Burman, Ronnie Creager, Jaws, Chris Joslin, Tim O'Connor, Mark Appleyard, Ryan Decenzo and Stefan Janoski. And of course, we threw in some Tony Hawk Pro Skater (THPS) footage. Be sure to check out Shrimpdaddy's "El Toro" Movie premiering today...do you think somebody backside flips el toro in the movie?!
Congratulations to Nyjah Huston on winning SLS Apex in Las Vegas!

The difference between not landing a trick and not making a home run is that people have made home runs before, but these skaters were attempting stuff that had never been done, and maybe wasn't even possible. That takes a lot of courage to attempt, and that alone is respectable. Another great video!

It doesn't even take anything away from the attempt if someone comes along and makes it. Seeing Jaws struggle at Lyon 25 just made Ali's hungover attempts even more impressive to me. That fact that he made it proves Ali right, he knew it was possible, even when other pros called him insane for even trying such a ridiculous thing.

I've seen (I'm sure every skater has seen) gaps and stuff that would be bad ass but are most likely impossibilities. But if someone tried one of those spots and didn't land it, I would still be impressed.

This is so true. What most people don't realize about skateboarding is how scary it actually is. Even ollieing down your first set of 2 stairs or dropping in on a 4 foot quarter pipe is SCARY at first! It's such a psychological battle to get that one attempt where you truly commit and go for it.

I still remember getting Sorry on VHS,and bringing it to my friends house. A bunch of us watched it for the first time in his basement, and when Ali tried the 25, we freaked out. I've never experienced another moment like that, where all of us just jumped up and screamed, it was pandemonium! It just seemed so far past what was possible. I still remember my friend telling me about Kircharts kickflip, before seeing it myself. Those guys just operated on another level of existence.

Legend has it Chris' robbery is why the set is locked up behind bars now. Oh and as for anybody lying to themselves saying it counted because his truck warped/broke, I hope you understand how ridiculous that sounds -- by that logic Jamie landed the LoF and Ali landed the Lyon 25 before Jaws. Chris himself doesn't count it, but (according to a recent interview that iirc is on this channel) he was satisfied enough to know that he COULD'VE landed it, and that if he were to go back and pave over the bumpers/pop open the gate today it would just be to satisfy fans. The El Toro tre is still up for grabs, and (I think largely due to Chris' attempts) it's an inevitable matter of time before someone rolls away with it - and they won't be considered the 2nd person to do it either.

I feel like at the time I remember the leap of faith being unbelievable, that someone tried that. But tbh looking back now, it really isn't the greatest trick never landed. It's insane but I know plenty of skaters that could attempt that. I've seen someone attempt something very similar on east Coast And now it's not the highest level ollied. He gets a lot of props for starting the whole gnarly trend for sure, he's the original but unfortunately for him he was far surpassed. He did a lot of buck stuff but it the tricks didn't age well. His parts did but tricks not. It's a trick that many skaters who are off one would think it could be tried. So idk him claiming the most insane trick almost done, is a little far fetched. It was memorable, it won't be in the future

It has always felt like tricks landed by not rolled away are what really mattered here. Bails aren't really ever looked back the same unless the person put one to feet. That commitment of trying to stick it and landing board to both feet is really what's being discussed here. It takes major risk to do that part, bails without landing on the board just aren't that dangerous and everyone respects those who gave it a try to stick it.

Trying and failing isn't true failure; failing to even try is. The only "failure" of any these skaters was a failure to accept limitations; to be bound by what others decided was or wasn't possible. The difference is obvious: when the trick is made, it's no longer an NBD. Therefore, people usually don't come trying to repeat it. This opens up a line of thought that perhaps other skaters also can do the trick, but they just weren't the first to try. But when a trick is not made, it's kinda not made by everyone. Everyone is free to come and try it, to prove that they can do it while the first one to try it failed. And then time passes and you don't hear anyone making the trick, it becomes some kind of proof that the skater who merely attempted it has really been pushing the limit of the impossible.

A think an interesting part of this is all the tricks landed but weren't filmed That random perfect moment that just happened at the skate park, or street sesh before the cameras were on I feel like a lot of stuff has gone down undocumented that would have been crazy to see

Hey Chase! I had an idea that would maybe help you out! I've noticed your "I used to skate" videos doing really well and on the Nine Club they chatted about broke skateboarders which got me thinking about a series you would be so suited for... "i used to be pro" There are so so so MANY pros i used to look up to and they just... vanished! Where are they now? Why did they leave the industry? What are they into or up to now? It's the skill that's impressive. Being able to hit a home run in baseball is kind of expected. No skateboarder is expected to land a 25 stair or even attempt it. It's more of an artform than a traditional sport.

The fact that we use “Leap of Faith” to describe anything that is remotely scary, tells you how famous that trick and spot is! Even if the thing we’re talking about is a figurative “leap”. It’s turned into a figure of speech for all of us.

If leap off faith was still around,and if I had the ability to try to kickflip it,I would literarly ask Jamie for permission lol. That gap is his,and it would feel like taking it away from him. He deserves it for jumping down such a huge gap and testing the waters to see what happens.

I don’t think it would be taking it away from him. It would be more like adding to the legacy imo. Same as Jaws at Lyon, he hasn’t taken anything away from Ali in my opinion. It’s how progression happens. Somebody has to try something first whether they succeed or fail, in order for the next guy to realise that it’s actually possible.

@@spunjedd I can't really appriciate what Jaws did on Lyon. Went there with gloves,some special board,and he grabed it. Is completly different then going there with a regular street board and just straight up olliing. That still has to be done and what Ali did was gnarlier.
@spunjedd
