The main is sagging (scalloping) because of inadequate halyard tension. Raise the sail to full hoist and then mark the halyard at the cleat, then you will always have it right. Also mark the halyard for your reefing hoist. Also, vang should be fully engaged off wind to keep the boom from flying away. You are right about sail twist to get all the ticks flying properly. The C-22 has a very short traveller, but use what you can to gain some twist. Pull traveller to weather then ease the mainsheet to shape the sail. Research for the best type anchor for the type bottom that you engaged and remember 7x1 at least for best hold. happy sailing

Here is advice that will make your life easier. Buy a modern anchor. You replaced an old plow with a new plow. Plows are designed to plow. To go through soil. There is a real good reason they do not hold. I bought a Rocna look alike for my Mac 26X for $140. Money well spent. Provides a good night sleep. When using an outboard, buy ethanol free gas. You will never have carb problems again. Also, I'm guessing you may be using choke or throttle on an already warm motor. It will flood. Never choke a warm motor. Just a guess on this one, but this is a common problem for people. Good luck. Love the videos!

Hey Bob... I must respectfully disagree. The claw anchor (or plow if you wish) is the go to anchor down here in Baja for every kind of bottom... and we get sudden nasty wind on a regular basis.

It does seem logical to assume a plow anchor will plow the ocean floor just as readily as a field. But the long curved handles behind the head of an agricultural plow weren't there for looks. They provided the leverage necessary for the man behind to keep the plow riding just below and parallel to the surface. If you let the plow dive it would bring up two big oxen to a dead stop in short order. A delta plow is a fine anchor. The weighted tip and geometry of the blade- to-shaft angle makes sure it will dive with proper use. I've used my 15# Delta with 20' of 5/16" chain (24' Islander Bahama) to ride out 50 knot storms in a mud bottom that was as slippery as thick grease. It would dive so deep it was almost impossible to pull up afterwards.

I remember the early simple days of little boats , a coffee can , concrete and an eyebolt made a great anchor !

At 10:56 you asked about the luff of the main balooning... I believe you did well to adjust the main but ignored the gib which was at that point, back-winding the main.

Tighten the mainsail downhaul to eliminate the luff sag.

Hey... How about a knot video? Which knots do you use the most when your are setting up and sailing on Knot Enough?

regarding the outboard. The automatic choke is not on when starting hot.

With the boom kicker installed, are you going to remove the pigtail that used to attach to the end of the boom when the sail is down? I just got a new back stay, and am debating a kicker or topping lift. Not sure if I’ll move the pigtail over to the new stay. Do you use it any more?
@AdventuresInParadise4 жыл бұрын
I still connect it when done sailing. It holds the boom a little higher than the kicker and since I leave it at anchor, secures the boom from swinging, even if just a little. I can see where it's not really necessary anymore though.

There's nothing that says you have to limit yourself to one anchor. How much swing in wind direction do you anticipate in this local?

How heavy is your new anchor?
@AdventuresInParadise3 жыл бұрын
22lbs. The old one only dragged three times and it was in very bad storms. Otherwise it never moved. I'm hoping this one does better until I can get back into the marina.

I had a C22 for years, loved it, plan to get another. One man's opinion... that little mushroom anchor is good for a kayak, not a C22... the claw anchor you have now is WAY better for everything, and they perform better in mud, sand, cobble, reef-rock... everything. Good job! Also (I learned the hard way) never attach an anchor to rode with a shackle or other mechanical device... bend the anchor on with a proper anchor hitch (www.animatedknots.com/anchor-hitch-knot#:~:text=Uses%3A%20The%20Anchor%20Hitch%20or,always%20be%20called%20a%20hitch.)

Thanks for the comment! That mushroom achor isn't an anchor for us, it was acting as a kellet - weighting the anchor line to take the shock off and lower the line as in calm water it was getting caught on the rudder. Now we're in a marina.

@@AdventuresInParadise: Never heard the word "kellet"... you just taught me something. Happy sailing!

Shackle is absolutely the proper way to attach the chain to the anchor and to a line with a properly spliced eye with a thimble. No place or need for an anchor hitch in permanent ground tackle. Curious about the use of the swivel though. Wouldn't you have as much articulation just with the chain? Is twist that much of a concern? What about splicing it partway back into the chain to limit the forces on it to in line with the rhode?

You don't want the top telltale flying straight out... You want it fluttering inside to outside about 50/50 as a baseline. Don't loosen you're vang that much either off the breeze. Your setup actually looked better before you started tinkering with it.
@grimyjersey64993 жыл бұрын
You are dragging because you don't have enough chain and scope.
@AdventuresInParadise3 жыл бұрын
Well, 70 feet of line, 20' of chain. In 8 feet of water. Plenty of scope. I don't know how you can keep more chain on the deck of a 22' boat with no anchor locker. I dragged in +45mph winds, once was because our line was caught on crab trap and it became our new anchor 20 feet off the bow. Doesn't mater now, I'm in a slip.
@CyclesMcHurtz3 жыл бұрын
It's 8 feet of water and est. 3 feet above the water to the tie point for the anchor, so 11 feet. You're a little under 7:1 scope, but if you have high winds I would think going for more than the length of the boat in chain. Probably closer to 30 feet for better security , but I certainly understand the storage issue!
