I completely agree with your advice on avoiding overlap. I remember when I first started bowling league and tournaments a long time ago, I basically stacked my bag with all strong asym pieces. When I couldn't move anymore, I realized I had nothing to ball down to. It's not a good feeling when you're only on game three of a five game set, and everything is becoming way too early. Now having a much better understanding of ball statistics and knowledge of the game, I have a much better progression in my arsenal. As for surface, it depends on what ball it is. I'll usually refresh it after a couple of sets, unless my stuff gets really marked up from the lanes, which thankfully isn't too frequent. Pearls I'll polish every nine games or so to keep consistency, and solids I'll do just when lane shine starts to become noticeable. My og Idol is overdue for a complete resurface lol.

I’ve started to really like keeping a lot of reactive stuff I use for house shots at like 3-4K on a spinner. They don’t really get more angular, they just go longer. Sometimes I just need stuff to lay a little bit on house. On sport shots, I like most of my stuff dusty as possible. I need more traction, and backends are almost always super clean for lefties, so I don’t want anything to jerk downlane. Low surface grits keep that in check for the most part.

Usually refresh cover every 10-20 games. Depends on how bad lanes are beating cover up. Local lanes tend to have a bit of garbage that comes back on balls.

I was bowling a tournament back in 2019, at an alley I've never been to before. It's about 45 mins south from my home alley in Connecticut. Same company Bowlero, but oh my god the conditions of the lane were BAD. I remember I threw my very first ball with my og Idol in practice, and it came back completely caked in some kind of rubber goop it was ALL over the ball. Everyone else in adjacent lanes were having the same issues. I brought the attention to the tournament director, and he gave me permission to have the pro shop give it a quick sanding and cleaning. Went back, threw it again, same thing but this time there was a chunk taken out by the thumb hole. Approaches were horribly sticky and marked up too. Packed up my stuff and left. Ended up filing a claim to have them replace my Idol but never heard back. Won't be going there ever again. I'm lucky my home house takes care of their lanes, because that was infuriating.

I was the same way. the good thing is the pro shop can bring it close to box finish if you booger it up. If you are bowling house shots you won't likely need to change surface unless you have really high revs. However, you will want to re create surface every 10 or so games. With lane oil and rolling most balls are above 4200 grit after 10 games. Abralone and creating the difference sell packs of 5 or 6 different pads. I prefer C.T.D. my self. Seem to last longer. If nothing else nice to be able to keep balls at a consistent finish. After all, consistency is everything in bowling.

I think you guys should show the graph of your opinion on hook potential every time you introduce a ball in the video so we know what area of the graph you're comparing too, especially since we may not remember each ball. Would give a visual aid on top of the actual numbers you show. Plus adding new balls to the graph (even if they aren't on there permanently) at the end of video for a visual show of how you think it performed.

Honest question: Whats the deal with Storm / Rotogrip? They are like... the same company? But they release a ball under one brand name, then later release an almost identical one under the other name? Also, how do bowing ball patents work? Why do we need so many companies making balls when surely we could cover every possible motion with just one brand?
@Barksbowling
@Barksbowling 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. As I’m part of the Brunswick family of brands, and we have 7 different ball brands, I get this question a lot. The easiest way I can explain it is that each brand is marketed towards a different personality type, different level of bowler, etc. Certain ball names and colours are better suited to a certain brand. But each brand needs its own lineup of balls from top to bottom, as there are bowlers who are very brand loyal, and will only buy Roto Grip, or only Storm, but not both. So yes, there is sometimes some overlap. Definitely talk to your pro shop operator any time you’re considering a new ball, just to be sure you don’t get the same type of ball reaction as a ball you currently have.

I've been out of the bowling game for about 3 years. After deciding to get back into it, I started going through all my equipment and had to throw out 4 bowling balls that had cracked even though they were stored inside my house. One of the casualties was my go to for medium-heavy oil, my Hyper Cell Fuse, which was a beast of a ball, little busted up over that one, pun intended. Anyways, looking for something comparable, and I've been out of the loop as far as ball releases since 2019. I'm thinking something with a hybrid coverstock and asymmetrical core. Ironically the RST-X1 is the ball that has been suggested to me by my local pro shop. I'm guessing Storm Incite is just the parallel version of this? Guess either one would be a good fit for me? Generally I haven't fared too well with dull surfaces though, that's my one worry. Any other possible suggestions ? UFO Alert?
@jrproshop
@jrproshop 2 жыл бұрын
The UFO Alert would actually be the closest current line ball to the Hyper Cell Fused. Similar core strength with an updated version of the same hybrid coverstock. The RST X-1 would be a little bit stronger than the Alert and the Fused.

But in the end, if your sanding pad has material on it, that is basically the ball LOL. I'd resurface or do mild resurfacing if your track needs work or polishing, etc. Otherwise, cosmetically, I leave my stuff the way it is (always keep them clean after league). Rst-x1 because I don't like the cherry vanilla🤢. I'll never buy a ball because it smells good. Except maybe hy-road max smells soooo damn tasty but also rolls well for me. However, I will NOT buy a ball if it smells bad. Like any cinnamon ball is out. Reminds me of fireball🤮.

Haha so every time a ball is thrown it'll pick up oil and dirt from the lane and the pinsetters, so I just asked how often people sand/ polish their ball back to how it came out of the box new

Me too, I don't do it because I have many ball options, changing the surface of any ball makes it completely different ball, you'll suffer until you get used to it.

@@yusufabdulrahman4740 "completely different ball" isn't necessarily accurate, I could argue I use surface when I feel the ball isn't doing what it should. I have a couple balls I leave lane shined and the rest I touch up every 9 games or as needed for a certain house/pattern.

Incredibly similar, would be willing to bet if you took every brand's high end solid asymmetrical, they'd all be within a couple boards of hook -Jungo
