This only happened because Brandon is known for being accurate about when he'll be finished with something. He's built up a lot of goodwill and trust by informing his readers of his progress and actually finishing when he says he'll be finished. Plus he gained a lot of that good reputation from doing an excellent job finishing The Wheel of Time. And then writing some extremely good books of his own. Similar to Guy Gavriel Kay who worked with Christopher Tolkien to bring us the Silmarillion and other unfinished or not originally intended for publication (J.R.R.) Tolkien works/notes. But I like Brandon's writing better at this point mostly because I haven't finished anything by Kay. EDIT: Here's another perspective on it... GRRM & Pat Rothfuss are fans turned writers (who also have their own lives to deal with, often unsuccessfully). They are tired; weary of many of the things in their lives it seems. Brandon, however, is a fan writer that is still a fan. His secret sauce is that his personal and professional life are organized, he sets goals, and is intensely curious about life in general, particularly cool story ideas. Neither of the aforementioned authors is truly goal-oriented and both claim to eschew the greater part of the concept of outlining. Brandon does a LOT of outlining and leaves his "gardening" (a term popularized by George R. R. Martin) for the time he is actually writing the stories he writes. This gardening is likely the source of much of any delay he experiences. He has to go back to his outline(s) and blend anything that happens on the fly with nothing to foreshadow it into the outline(s) and then go back to his writing, leaving the actual revision for when he finishes writing the book. Something I see as a very useful blend of "Architect" and "Gardening" writing styles. Or if you prefer Stephen King's analogies a blending of Outlining and writing by the "seat of your pants." Because he has a foundation to build on he actually finishes his stories. Perhaps that's because he doesn't worry too much about the frills like paint color, tile choice, etc., whereas GRRM and Rothfuss seem overwhelmed by too much choice into a sort of mental writer's paralysis.
@falconerd343
@falconerd343 Жыл бұрын

Thank you, Brandon, for all that your stories have brought me over the years. I started reading The Way of Kings when I was in 4th grade and here I am at 18 years old in the military. I often draw upon your creations for strength in my own life and will continue to do so. I can't wait to see this journey through!

I wasn't even aware this was a pushback. For some reason I thought W&W4 was the main release for 22, and for 23 it'd be the last Skyward book, then 24 would be the Stormight 5. Not sure how I messed that up. Gives me a chance to save up for a hopeful Dragonsteel convention centered around Stormlight 5's release too.

I am happier with delayed release than a hurried one anytime , I also prefer late 2024 because I'll be too busy with studies to read something till then, so all in all this is sort of perfect for me :D I'm so excited this future release will keep me going

You are still an awesome dude Brandon. You take the time to keep everyone up to date when possible and are kind enough that we are forgiving when the schedule slips by a few months since you care enough to give us a polished product instead of a day 1 patch with it.

So this is how it starts- first a few delays and other projects, then major delays. I can see how Patrick Rothfuss and George R R Martin got started pushing their books back. Brandon has been absolutely prolific- don't get me wrong. But I am glad that this is book 5 instead of book 3, because I feel like his is how major series get pushed back. Meetings, hollywood, special projects are all valid reasons. At the end of the day, Brandon can work on whatever he wants, but I hope his deserved success doesn't cut into the stormlight archives timeline too much because this series is truly a treasure. Edit: also, it's amazing we even get updates like this. It's truly appreciated to get updates rather than silence. Other authors should take note

I read the first four SA books, as well as mistborn 1-6 and secret history in the last 18 months or so, and I love it so much. I'm reading SA again then I'll read W&W4 if it's out then, or Elantris and/or Warbreaker in the mean time. Needless to say, I'm not upset about rereading any of the books in any series, nor am I upset about the wait.

I'm only a new fan of your writing, but I'm glad to say take as long as you need!
