The Stormlight Archive is probably one of the best "advanced ancient civilization" stories out there, simply because the more you find out the more you realize the Silver Kingdoms actually weren't more impressive than the current age except for a very specific part of society. Also, I have to say the art on this video is really above and beyond. It's fitting for the subject matter, and I appreciate that all the characters look accurate to their canon or implied skin tones.

12:11 nitpick here: deadeyes did not exist before the Recreance. The Radiants did not know that the Recreance would turn their spren into deadeyes. We don't know precisely why oathbreaking "kills" the spren now, but it's assumed that Ba-Ado-Mishram had something to do with it.
@Colonel_Overkill2 ай бұрын
Personally I think it is due to the way the bond was severed that kills the spren. The radiant breaking the oath may be more traumatizing than simply dying.
@Chimaeramentis2 ай бұрын
@@Colonel_Overkill But there have been those that broke their oaths before and their spren did not become deadeyes. So it's not that either. It's been heavily implied that the difference in consequence hinges on what happened to Ba-Ado-Mishram. Her imprisonment is the marker of change. We just don't know how exactly yet, even though the delineation is quite clear... It's also possible it had something to do with Honor's death. As the domain of oaths and the consequences of their abandonment was directly overseen by Honor. But with Honor weakening who knows what Ba-Ado-Mishram might have done. That part is still unknown. It would make sense that Honor's obsession with oaths might have deepened the severity of the bond or that it somehow compounded with Ba-Ado-Mishram's undisclosed meddlings, and thus resulted with spren becoming deadeyes, which never happened before.
@Colonel_Overkill2 ай бұрын
yes, I found a WoB clarifying that 2 days after stating this. So much for my theory lol
@killervoid63522 ай бұрын
@@Chimaeramentis I think the obvious implication is that Ba-Ado-Mishram was an unmade. She was corrupted by Odium, unmade and not made by him, so therefore she was something before. I think Gavilar called her a "powerful and Crucial spren." I guess that before she was an unmade, she was important to Roshars function and without her it broke.
@Chimaeramentis2 ай бұрын
@@killervoid6352 Makes sense to me, though I still find it chronologically uncertain, as it always seemed the Unmade were corrupted long before the Knights Radiant were established. And there were no deadeyes before the imprisoning of Ba-Ado-Mishram...

One of the most evocative descriptions of the Heralds came from Zahel in the fourth book. They're what he calls "Type Two Invested" beings. They had already died and their souls departed after their first deaths; instead all that remained was a massive amount of Investiture that filled their bodies and thought that it was the original Herald. The Heralds we see in the books aren't the original men and women but raw magical power in a human shape that has been forced to endure over ten thousand years of life and have become more akin to spren than humans at this point.
@stevenhedge28503 ай бұрын

@@Lukas-ht9xm phone hates spelling some times
@Chimaeramentis2 ай бұрын
@@stevenhedge2850 That part really hit me and it took a lot of blinking to accept that those people died and left behind a sort of simulacra of their consciousness... It's not even just the ship of Theseus concept, which is enough to hurt the human brain, as Zahel literally compared it to fossilization, which is markedly more extreme. It's possible that his belief of the original Vasher being dead is painted by his cynical outlook. We have no confirmation on that part, besides what Kelsier describes in the Secret History of Mistborn. It's implied there, from what I remember, that his soul did not leave, but that he stayed somewhere between having had enough Investiture to resist the pull of the Beyond. Though what happened to Kelsier might be different than what happened to Zahel/Vasher or the Heralds. He explains the type of entity, but the way it is created does not necessarily have to be the same in all cases. The Lightborn for one have no memories of their previous lives, just how they died, but it is stated they keep their souls. Since Splinters are made of Investiture aka the spiritual power of divinity, then it's possible their souls are simply absorbed by that power and that is why Zahel says the original Vasher died. So it heavily hinges on how much of the person remains in the form of their personality and memories, but also on whether you're willing to believe it's the same "ship" or not.

Blended in Rythm of war saying to Adolin after the trial: "I do not know if making rew Radiants is a good idea - but I must admit that your ancestors were not traitors. Something did frigthen them enormously, to cause humans and spen to destroy their bonds. And if the spen did not know they would die... then pieces of this puzzle are still missing. The questions are more complicated, and more dangerous than we ever knew". In other words, spen and radiants decided to end their bonds without knowing the consequences, that in the end were massive. The known answer, because the humans are not from Roshar, seems weak, and this paragraph from rythm of war seems to confirm that something else or someone caused the recreance.
