This video was filmed in October 2023 at the Japan Monkey Center, Inuyama, Japan.
In the video, Taro is relaxing in the yard at noon. He puts his legs up and eats weeds in the sun. The video covers a little bit about his long-time girlfriend Hanako and her mate Kisotaro, who passed away in 1987. After spending a while in the yard, Taro decided to go back to his room. Taro roams around the indoor room to check if everything is alright, and he constantly watches his keeper's whereabouts. The video ends with Taro moving back to his yard again. - In November 1975, he was transferred to Dublin Zoo, Ireland (age 2).
- In May 1986, he was transferred to Longleat Safari Park, England (age 13).
- In November 1986, he was transferred to Edinburgh Zoo, Scotland (age 13).
- In April 1989, he was transferred to JMC, Japan (age 16). He weighed 134kg. He had habits of coprophagy and R/R.
- In June 1989, he started living with Hanako (female est age 20), and he had lived with her for about 20 years. They didn't mate.
- On February 25, 2009, Hanako passed away. Taro was 35 years old. He's been kept solitary since then.
According to his keeper, his current weight is estimated to be around 150kg which is the smallest among the silverbacks in Japan.

ドリーホワイトさん、温かいコメントありがとうございます😊ハナコと木曽太郎も夫婦というよりはきょうだいのようだったようですが、二人は仲良しで手を繋いで寝たりしていたそうです。タロウさんもずっと一人の生活を免れて今は余生をゆったりと過ごしているようで安心です。ウクライナのトニーの安全と健康をお祈りします🙏🌸

Taro has had a long life & at least he shared with another gorilla for sometime. It seems like heart disease is prevalent in gorillas He has a nice indoor space, he seems content & i don't feel sad for him like i do with Rola & Monta. Great video, thank you Karin.🙋😘🌺

今生きている高齢のゴリラは、人間に翻弄されてきたと思います。どんな苦難にも負けず頑張ってきた彼らは見習うべき友です。野生のゴリラも飼育下のゴリラもいなくなる日は近づいています。タロウさんは幸せな生き方も不幸な生き方も知りません、ありのままを生きています。でも、愛されているのは確か。いつかは天に帰っていくのは命あるもののさだめ、その日が来るまで、タロウさんを愛していきたい、そして、タロウさんとの暮らしが、のちのちのゴリラの幸せに導く経験になればよいですよね。

おっしゃる通りですね。高齢ゴリラたちはまだゴリラの生態をよくわからなかった時代に乱獲などの悲劇を経たり、不必要に人工哺育されたりして育った個体たちです。タロウさんは生い立ちから群れを持つことは叶いませんでしたが、愛されていることは確かですね。タロウさんが長生きしてくれているおかげで過去に確かに生きたゴリラさんたちの存在を知ることができました。感謝です🙏海野カモメさん、暖かく思慮深いコメントいただきありがとうございました。

Karin, i didnt expect Taro to be that big after he got up!😮His saggital crest is huge!At his backside, there looked to be a heart shape too.What an amazing silverback and i loved hearing about his history.Some people complain about gorillas being in captivity but look what they have learned about heart health.With health checks now gorillas are living longer, fuller lives.this video is wonderful.Always, Lynn💜🦍💜🌅😉

タロウさんの白内障の進行具合心配ですね。上野のモモコも白内障らしきモヤが目に見えて少し心配してます。高齢になると人間も犬猫もそうですが白内障は訪れる厄介な症状ですよね。イギリスのモンキーワールドが霊長類(どの種だったか忘れました)に、白内障の手術を施して成功している動画を以前見たことがあります。人間が治療できるように類人猿たちにもクリアな視界にしてあげられる日がくることを願います。タロウさんに関しては超高齢ということもあって、負担のないケアをJMCさんは考えられてるのでしょうね。kazさん、ご視聴ありがとうございました⭐️

ハナコさんの死因の件、了解致しました。とても残念ですね。 JMCは現状、タロウさんの健康診断を行っていませんし体重計も壊れているありさまです。過去にも恐らく健康診断はしていなかったと思われ、タロウさんが長生きできているのはタロウさんのラッキーな体質に拠るものとしか言いようがないですよね😅 他の方のコメントで拝見しましたが、モモコさんの目の色も確かに白んできていますね… 全世代に渡って日本のゴリラは心配事ばかりです🤯

ハナコさんのような亡くなり方は今の高齢ゴリラだれにでも起きうることだなと感じました。今でも健康診断を定期的にしている園はそんなに多くないですよね😨高齢ということを口実にして飼育技術向上に努めない園もあります🙄（現在はJAZAの調査などあって改善方向に向かっているといいのですが・・・）体重計もない、健康診断もされてこないなか、タロウさんが長生きなのはタロウさんの体質もかなりあるでしょうね。あとは異常行動がみた限りみかけなかったので飼育環境がよくストレスなく暮らしているように感じました。ムーチョさん、ハナコさんの死因について以前相談させてもらってその節は大変ためになる助言をいただきありがとうございました😊動画にするまで時間がかかってしまいました😅

Bom dia! Karin é possível fazer uma cirurgia para catarata a laser? Eu tenho um amigo de 80 anos que passou duas vezes por esse procedimento, estou perguntando porque acho triste não poder fazer nada a respeito, lindo vídeo, obrigada Karin 🥰🥰🥰

Thank you for caring about the gorillas in Japan. My mom also had cataract surgery. I hope the zoos in Japan will eventually be able to do this surgery for great apes too soon, but in reality, there are still many zoos that do not even treat the cavities of animals. They have lots and lots to improve in terms of the veterinary care of zoos. Obrigada Cláudia. Tenha um bom dia.🌸
