See just how much the mule palm has grown over the years! This Mule palm is a cold hardy cross between a Butia odorata and a Syagrus romanzoffiana var. litoralis "Silver Queen". This mule palm is best suited for 8b/9a without protection. Our mule palm is protected at temps in the low 20's °F (-7 °C) and under for winter and will be hard to keep alive long term in our climate. It is currently growing fast and is planted in pure clay soil.
"This cultivar of the Silver Queen Palm is from Argentina, Uruguay,and Southern Brazil Santa Catarina, where it is found at over 1000m (3300 ft.) altitude with a thicker sturdier trunk that supports a compact crown of arching fronds with particularly thick and wide leaflets. It is very cold hardy to 20 Deg. F and is said to survive temperatures of 15 Deg. F undamaged. This palm has been in cultivation in the U.S. for many years now under the name Silver Queen Palm. Reportedly the palm received that name in Florida not because its fronds are silver but because after a hard freeze that killed the more frost tender Queen Palms, the ones that survived (the Silver Queens), had leaflets that appeared in a strange, translucent silver tone in sunlight, the result of a light frost damage. "

Your Mule palm looks great and healthy . I remember watching some of your videos about winterizing a mule. You definitely encourage me to keep my queen alive. Best regards MarcusH from palm talk.

Just an idea. "If" a healthy vigourous Cocos/Queen/Butia hybrid palm ever did get killed off by an unusual hard freeze. I wouldn't be in too much hurry to dig it up until at least mid-Summer of the next season. It's in the genes of their relatives like true Coconut palm and Butia palms to occasionally multi-stem with a second or third trunk. So there is always a chance, and I admit it's just a chance, that a damaged Cocos/Queen/Mule will send up a new "pup" from the base. I daresay the same applies for a single trunked Phoenix canariensis, as its closest relative Phoenix dactilyfera is usually multi-trunked and many of the Phoenix palms are at least sometimes multi -trunked.

Insane success story! Good for you! Can’t believe it grows that fast! The longer it lives, the more tougher to cold it will become, so you’re really doing great! Hope for no bad winters lol!

That is a nice MULE! I'm thinking about installing a palm (mule, sabal or queen) next to my house. I have bit more room than you have. Do you have any concerns or insight in regards to a palm being close to a house or pool deack?
@tntropics
@tntropics 2 жыл бұрын
Hard to answer that question without more specifics and a pic or something. this mule just bends away from the house and is not a problem nor is a Trachycarpus planted within a couple feet. just aesthetic beyond that.
