I'm not all that interested in the numbers. I dont care how many BHP my car has, I care about how it feels to drive. Does it make me smile? Does it make me happy? Does it being me pride? Cars about how they make me feel, and about their art, and about their history and their stories for me. That's where JamesEm, Tyrrell's garage, Hubnut Harry Metcalfe etc nail it so right. I know Harry goes a little more into the raw figures than the others, but he still manages to make it more about the presence and experience than the numbers.

Being around one I’ve found they’re a car you learn to love. Strange sentiment given the price and V12 flagship history, i know. As you said, James, you’d expect to be overwhelmed by visceral fizz from the moment you fall inside (ingress and egress isn’t the most graceful experience🤣). But it doesn’t come straight away. Gearbox is awkward. The engine feels gutless at lower RPM. Feels unusable at low speeds. Visibility is dire. The list goes on. As you spend more time in-and-around the car however, you learn how it operates and become wise to its idiosyncrasies. It’s a car you truly have to “learn”. Once you’ve done that, you can appreciate it for what it is. A guy from Lambo said you have to spend time with the car before you enjoy it. He wasn’t wrong. It isn’t a car you can jump into and employ learned behaviours from your typical Torque converters. It takes time. Actually, once you’ve given it some time, it’s quite a usable daily. The gearbox isn’t as bad as you expect. It’s relatively practical. The engine is phenomenal! It urges you to explore its full rev-range. It rewards you with incredible flatulence on the overrun. The car I’ve been with had 4ws, which really shortens the wheelbase and makes the car feel agile. It’s every bit the event you hope. After you’ve given it some time🤣

I have tried 2 Aventadors. One is an early UK imports, the other is the Indonesian market from 2013. Vastly different. The early cars are clunky as all hell. The later car felt much better, the gearbox is not as awkward as pre-2013 cars, and it rides better. The spec on the later car that I tried is also very tasty. Balloon White (pearl colour) with Terra Emilia brown leather interior. Oh-so-good.

I think peak Lamborghini was the manual Merci... Savage, challenging, elegant, more functional than you'd expect and Audi had been in charge long enough that all bits were usually done up properly before it left the factory. After that they just went a bit too aimed at the modern KZbinr for my taste. Not that it matters, they're a few price brackets out of my reach as things stand.

Hi James-loved hearing your thoughts on the aventador. I have bought my 2013 one about 8 months ago, I was much like you after I test drove it, left feeling not in love with it-I also did not think it was very fast? I had an r8 V10 plus gen 1 at the time and I though the aventador should be soo much faster! I even spoke to Ricky from REPeformance, and he said that they are fast, but Mabey you just think they should be madder than they are. I drive my r8 back and though that the aventador was not what I though, but there was something telling me that it is my dream car, and we did buy it! A thing which made a big difference was to put new air filters in her! Another story there of how I found out ect! But we have done plenty of miles in her now and it’s just a joy to use and drive, and the more I drive it the better I think she gets. Thanks James. Craig

I completely fail to understand so-called "supercars". They're all so lardy that they can in no way be described as sports cars. Seems to me that they're all about showing off and getting yourself noticed - and you yourself said that the people outside were having a better experience than you were inside. Sorry, but that statement alone says that owners of such cars somehow feel that everyone else must be really interested in what they're driving, when in the majority of cases they're really not (in the slightest). If you're going to have all these features and lardiness, why not put them into a proper GT that isn't pretending to be a racing car? At the moment, with even Lotus packing on the kilos, there is only one manufacturer producing vehicles that truly prioritise light weight, handling and performance, and that company is headed by a guy named Gordon Murray. There is also Caterham, of course, but they're at the other end of the price scale and I assume we're talking about so-called exotica here. Respect though, for your reviews of much more mundane machinery, which always seem to hit the spot.
@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 2 жыл бұрын
Surely you realise you answered your own question? They are not sportscars, nor were ever inteded to be. They are sporty GT:s for the showoffs, more or less. As for their purpose for the majority of customers, its to show off, as stated above. A normal GT car fails miserably on that point. As is the purpose for a majority of all mainstream "sports cars" currently in production as well, but of course to a lesser degree.

Whilst it's not really at the same level as a Lambo, or even a Porsche, I do have a similar experience as a more upper working class guy. As a major petrolhead, like we all are here, BMW was one of those marques that you always imagine to be excellent. I found myself in the position to own one, a 2014 320d M-Sport Touring. Okay, not the most iconic of Bimmers, I know. But it's still RWD, it's still the M-Sport trim/suspension/etc. More than fast enough for every day driving. Man, I couldn't connect with it. There was one single occasion where everything fell into place driving along a totally deserted A74 in East Scotland. Truely spectacular road, and the car rose to the occasion with such perfection. But every day driving, even spirited driving around the local twisties/B roads it just didn't do it. It was too firm (not on run flats), the steering didn't seem to ever know whether it wanted to be vague or communicative, it was forever getting caught in the camber or track lines on the road. Passengers hated it. Although, I will say, it was fantastic in slow, stop/start traffic on motorways. I had it about 16months before I binned it off for another Golf GTD, and I have no regrets. For a similar 'type' of car, it just manages to find that balance between comfort and enjoyability with no compromise.

I've had a 2 series coupe since 2016 as my first BMW and my wife has a GTD, I've really gelled with the 2'er especially on B roads and find the GTD good but less engaging. Both are manual gearbox cars. I'd be interested to try an F series 3er to form my own opinion as it did get some negative reviews on the driving front with reviews of the new G series (which I have test driven) using phrases like 'a return to form'.

I've only ever experienced Alfa/Fiat Group's DNA set-up, and that was properly terrible in each of the 3 cars I tried it in. However, I do wish that engineers would just set up a car to perform at the best of its abilities, and stop this silly obsession with 'choices'. If I want comfort and smoothness, I'll buy a Lexus. If I'm buying a Lamborghini, I want lightning quick shifts with a nice rifle bolt action and sporty handling. Attempting to give customers the ability to choose between mutually exclusive parameters just ruins the driving experience, regardless of which 'modes' you're using. If the Aventador had been equipped with a nice gated 6 speed manual, I imagine James would have absolutely loved and adored it.

One thing I remember from the time was Chris Harris writing a very critical article about the Aventador, which he felt did not handle well, but worse, he tried a few, and they were all different but none of them good... and he wrote that he talked to colleagues in automotive journalism who confirmed that, in their experience, no two Aventadors drove the same. That article got him banned from Lamborghini, and I believe he still is, as he hasn't written about or done a video with one since AFAIK, but that 2013 overhaul suggests Lamborghini knew the car wasn't good enough.

Great video James. Here's a suggestion for you. Get your shekels out, head to an importer and put down a deposit on a Corvette Z06. Two boots (cameras & clothes), 670bhp mid-engined NA V8. In person they are really quite striking and seem to be well built for a change.

that's what I noticed first time I saw aventador on pics and vids, I thought to myself, man that interior is cheap, the leather is sort of plasticy, it's like it's fake, plastic trim looks cheap also, all that on a car that costs so much...

I appreciate your perspective. You bring to light a lot of the experience I tend to give a pass. The early AVs are by far the least impressive. Nonetheless AV’s as a whole are wicked machines. I’d be hard pressed to think the one you drove was in the best of shape. Down shifts should be the best part of the entire experience. Slow speed acceleration is a little bit like launching a space shuttle tho 😅

Hi James-great hearing your thoughts on the aventador. I bought my 2013 one about 8 months ago now. I had an r8 v10 plus gen 1. I felt very let down after driving the lambo-it was what I though-but it was not at the same time! I did not think it was that fast? I even rung Ricky at REPeformance and asked him how fast they should be-he said they should be fast-but I think Mabey you just think they should be even faster?? On my drive home after test driving I though I think I will just keep my r8! But there was just something telling me that I must have my dream car! So we did but it, and after a service and new air filters and new tyres and couple of bits it was soo much better-drove much better, was deffo faster. We have done a few good miles in her now and just love the thing! And the more you drive it the better it gets I think-its not perfect for sure, but it’s not a daily car for sure, but it’s an amazing machine and everytime I use it makes me very happy-apart from the fuel. Thanks James. Craig.

So what do you class the Mercedes SLR Mclaren 722, Lexus LFA, Ferrari 599 GTO, Ferrari F12 TDF, Ferrari 812 SF, C7 Corvette ZR1, Mercedes AMG GTR, Mercedes SLS Black Series, Dodge Viper, Aston Martin one-77 and R35 Nismo GTR as then? Clearly none of these cars are Grand Tourers and clearly none of them are Sports Cars either. So I'm interested as to how you categorise them.

I had a similar (albeit you are likely not to agree with me) experience with the F-Type V8. To be clear I own a V6S roadster (from new) and was leant a V8R coupe as a courtesy car during a service one year. Now I know, you're not a fan of the V6, and the viewers are likely to slaughter me for saying this - but I was really truly disappointed with the V8R experience. For nearly 30k more, I was expecting to experience everything I loved about my car, but just "More" of it. I was really shocked to drive it and it to feel so much worse. -The front end felt really heaving in tighter corners. -It had difficulty putting the power down onto the road. -It didn't feel at all balanced. -The noise was just unbearable, even with all the dynamics and sports exhaust on normal. Just sounded like it was backfiring all of the time. -There was no notable improvement than you'd expect an additional 30k (which, was like... what... a 40% increase in price over my V6S). I came to the conclusion that if I wanted more from an F-type, I would be best off making some performance tweaks to my current car rather than looking to trade up.

I test drove both a V6S and V8 not long after the F Type was launched and I much preferred the V6S. I thought the engine sounded better, the performance difference was barely noticeable and the suspension setup was a much better compromise between flat cornering and ride comfort. Basically, Jays got it all wrong then!

Is the Aventedor capable of "re-programming"? Those engine "mode" sound as though they need looking at and matching as you described? (upshifts and downshifts) If the ECU's and gearbox software are "hackable" then maybe you could be involved in a custom "remapping" of those pieces of software? I'm sure there are race teams based in the UK that could diagnose and correct these issues for you, and it MIGHT be a very interesting video?

I've long thought they'd be rubbish. Pretty, although Lambo's now all look the same. But it's really heavy. And 4WD. And tiny windows with rubbish visibility. And the Huracan looks just as good, while being the smaller cousin, so perhaps nicer to own and drive

Bigeye scooby wrx, bearing in mind I was driving and 205xs, yes it was quicker and made that noise but it felt so leaden after the 205, it took so long to get going. I much preferred the 205 seats and overall driving position. The steering was to light and had no feel, the ride was dreadful and as for throttle adjustability forget it at road speeds. It only had 12000 miles and compared to my 50000m 205 I thought it would be next step in the performance car world and a big step up, boy was I disappointed and it taught me a big lesson in what I was looking for in cars

The aventador is a piece of Junk, its the car they deleted lamborghinis soul from when they removed the Bizzarini V12 from it in 2014, and if you ever see a Murcie and an aventador next to each other, its just the same car made uglier, slower, fatter and less precise, and they have never sorted it out or made it better than the past car before it, and that includes their latest version, like hell they shouldnt even be making it with how bad it is, they should restore the bizzarini V12 and put in the Volkswaggen V10 they got running around which is ironically just the right size for a lamborghini given its basically the size of a countach, and the looks have started to come back now that they gave Winkleman his walking papers, although sadly he is now at audi ruining the joint again not to mention the costs, the costs of maintaining it with the new systems they put in including the motor, literally doubled the running costs from about 20 grand if the car is screwed up and needs a service to 40 and every single time someone talks about it, they usually drive a Mclaren afterwards and go what is a lamborghini again, which just happened most recently with Matt Farah with a car that cost exactly as much, between the Aventador Final Version (good riddance to bad rubbish) to the 765LT, like same cost, same class, not even close, the Mclaren is what the lamborghini should be, light fast, quick and right on the edge, while the aventador as Rob Feretti, the super speeders guy, who I always call Steve Buscemi's car renting cousin put it perfectly, given he rents them out, and he has a stupid orange one just like the one you just showed there its the ideal lamborghini for people who dont like to drive, and I personally think its loud, ugly, obxnious, and ment for morons and an 812 superfast would eat it alive even in the class it should be in, the grand tourers, not supercars, like it is the epitome of everything wrong with lamborghini as it literally plays everything safe and does nothing special, when the company made its bones about it by embarassing and being ahead of ferrari in literally everything, including high speed crashing if you ever see some of the period photos of miura wrecks lol which included a guy standing ontop of a silver one flipped that had just tried to end him with him standing above it trumphantly lol like what about going for a 1992 Diablo VT one of the early ones like the black one Harry Drove before they put the four wheel drive system on it so it was faster than stock, or look on the US side for cars or even the Ferrari Equvalent of the Diablo, the 512TR, a Fixed testarossa with a better gearbox, better engine, but way uglier styling given they screwed up the decklid and didnt fix the front end so instead of fixing the one bad thing with the car, the front bumper, they screwed up the decklid, smoothed out the front and redid the interior so it looked worse. while actually mechanically making it a way better car with the engine lower, further forward and fitting an easier to use manual gearbox in it.

Mr JayEmm, with the ISR you need to treat it like a manual ie take foot off gas when shifting up and it will be smooth, well as smooth as the driver knows how to be just like a manual. You need an Aventador S. it’s the complete package.

James, just to say having watched a lot of your videos I’d sooner watch you than Top Gear. I’ve been a 911 fan since I was 6 years old, the 930 Turbo was my poster car as a kid born in the 70’s. I finally got to drive a 996 Turbo tiptronic a few years ago during a super car drivers day I’d bought for my wife (she drove a Vantage). The performance and handling were just as I heard, but the gearbox was really off putting. I’m not sure if it was just from over use, but the changes felt ragged and abrupt. Fortunately, it didn’t ruin the experience for me and I’m still happy I got to drive one of my favourite cars. Another nice video, keep em coming 👍🏾

Nope GT4 RS is not. Couple of reasons why - GT4 is still a Cayman, they're fairly common - even if the RS is not. Same logic is why a 911 Turbo is not a supercar. Also, 430 is from a long time a go - the power outputs were suitable for a supercar then. Once a car is a supercar, it's always a supercar. You wouldn't say a Countach isn't a supercar because its "only" 400hp
