Doc here. Appendicitis can have a “non rescript or non localized” pain due to the specific type of nerves involved. (Basically slower and vague). Also, is some less-than-usual circumstance, the appendix can migrate to odd locations under the diaphragm leading to very odd symptoms and pain. I am glad you did okay!

A doctor from India. Hope you are doing well post op!! I think why your symptoms were different was because basically most people have appendix at a certain position in body (retrocecal) but some people have it sightly differently oriented in the same location. Imagine it as minute hand of clock. Just like it, appendix can face at different positions from the same point of origin. And in those who have the different orientation, symptoms might be less severe/different. Follow the post op advice. Excited to see u back again. Cheers.

Man my experience was so weird. It wasn’t appendicitis but it felt like it, sharp pain on my right abdomen, but I had no fever or anything. I spent all night in the hospital, they wheeled me to different departments they couldn’t tell me what was wrong. Turns out it was just UTI with localized pain on the right. So odd.

I feel like with ANY medical issue it's so weird to write something off just because you don't have THE EXACT SAME symptoms as someone else. Every body is so different! Anyway, glad you got it figured out and that you're on the mend :)

I can't agree more. I remember once feeling bad that I was in the hospital for something a high school acquaintance had said was minor. I come to find out about two years later that it wasn't as minor as I had thought.

While I get your point, I can understand that they go with the symptoms 99% of people have and start to look there. They don't got the budget nor the time to just screen for everything. So to start with the most obvious reason and then go down the list if it's not that seems logical. Ofcourse, that doesn't mean that you should not believe someone when they say they are in pain or anything like that. But that you don't immediatly think of appendicitis and first screen for other things that are more commonly associated with those symptoms is not wrong imo.

@@jumperszijnirritant I wasn't really speaking to the hospital or doctor persay, but just as a general type of "wow bodies are weird" type of deal. My best friend and I both had mono, but had two very different experiences. Both I and the doctor first thought I had a very bad case of strep. So no shade at all to the medical community! Totally get where you're coming from.

I’m so glad you’re okay! It sounds like an ordeal, for sure, but the important thing is that you’re recovering now. You mentioned fear of saying something silly post surgery. The only surgery I’ve had was removing my wisdom teeth at 19 years old. When I woke up with gauze hanging out of my mouth, I declared to the nurse that I loved her. While my poor mother was dragging me out, I was telling everyone in the lobby that I loved them too. To judge by their smiles, they seemed to appreciate it. I’m O- too, by the way. Rest up and get well!

Glad to hear you are on the mend and healing well. My appendix was misdiagnosed too and by the time they finally figured out what it was, it detached and ruptured, causing all sleuth of issues. Had to have three back-to-back surgeries, spend over a month in a hospital and now have a huge fat scar from hip to hip. One tip I learned during my recovery: hug a pillow to your stomach if you have to cough, sneeze or laugh. It helps with sharp burst of pain. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I'm glad you're feeling better, Elliot! I had the same thing when i was 14 and it was the absolutely same thing you described. Just weird discomfort, not a sharp pain. I started feeling weird one night, couldn't sleep and when i told my mom in the morning she took me to the ER. Luckily, the doctors figured it out immediately so i had the surgery. You seem to be doing quite well, i didn't want to walk for a week after that. You'll be fine, just take it easy! :)

I get extremely uncomfortable when thinking about health issues, hospitals and whatnot. Still, I kept watching because I really appreciated how upbeat you were while talking about the whole experience, even though it can't have been fun... I have only ever been hospitalised one time 15 years ago, when I was a kid. Since then, I feel like my entire life has been a wait until the time inevitably comes when I have to go to a hospital again. I am doing my best to prepare for that scenario emotionally, trying to convince myself that I won't freak the hell out. Hearing you talk about this stuff in such a manner really helps with putting my mind more at ease. So, while this isn't the content I have subscribed for, thank you for making this video anyway and I hope you recover fully in no time ❤️

I’m glad they caught it in the end and you got the needed help. I wish you a speedy recovery! Of course I don’t know and don’t want to assume anyone’s personal medical experiences and am not a doctor myself. But I want to share a tip, that might be useful for someone. my mum gets super nauseous after having ‘normal’ anaesthesia. And when you tell this to the doctor before the surgery (most ask about your past complications in relation to anaesthesia anyway), they can give you sth else with the anaesthesia right from the beginning, which reduces the nausea a lot. For her it made a huge difference. But at least from my experience they don’t usually give that particular medicine to everyone from the start, because it’s not helpful for everyone. So you have to explicitly tell the doctors about your anaesthesia related nausea before the surgery and then maybe they can help you with it. (Country: Germany)

Oh my gosh, almost the SAME thing happened to my husband! Only his would come and go like every other week and everyone was like, "it can't be appendicitis because that doesn't come and go!" But it turns out in rare cases appendicitis inflammation can flare and then sort of settle, even if it doesn't go away. Thank goodness we finally found a doctor who figured it out because my husband was MISERABLE. He had the surgery and immediately felt better. 🤣 His appendix was like 4 times normal size! Hope your recovery goes quickly - so glad you got some answers! Sending you best wishes.

Medical Lab Tech here. Glad you are feeling better and doing well post op! I had figured appendicitis since that's the most likely 'random' surgery that people recover quickly from. Your symptoms aren't unheard of though, weird how they didn't catch it the first time. Some basic blood work would have helped. You were probably dehydrated from the vomiting when he did the blood draw and hence the pain. Great seeing you back!

Thank you for sharing! It is very important that everyone knows to look for atypical symptoms too with every illness :) Thankfully my family doctor immediately sent me to the surgery to get a roentgen, when I had pain all over ("weird wandering pain" we called it), just in case it would be my appendix. It wasn't, but it's nice that he went for that so we could rule it out (or catch it early if it were).

In April right after everything closed down I had to go in for emergency gall bladder removal surgery after being in immense pain for a week and the entire time I was the ER, admitted to the hospital, taken in for surgery and after waking up my husband couldn’t be with me at all. I was all by myself for that for 14 hours and I was terrified. So glad you could have your husband with you for at least part of it!

Nurse here. Guessed appendicitis as soon as you said the symptoms. Patients sometimes do not have classic appendix pain, but rather a bloated tight ache all over. Glad they did a CT and you are doing well. I think I would report back to the urgent care what your diagnosis was, had you listened to their medical advice and waited several days of throwing up you may have had it rupture. This is a learning moment for the practitioner you saw.

This sounds SO MUCH like when my appendix ruptured in 2017. No localized pain, but my abdomen was so distended and swollen that the pain was just everywhere. By the time I finally went to the hospital though it had been ruptured for like 4 days and I had peritonitis and gangrene, so I was in the hospital for 2 weeks after surgery. I also thought I had food poisoning and said my pain level was at like a 7 before they got my CT scan results back. But they also couldn't see my intestines at all on the scan so they were like OKAY WELL THAT'S BAD.

When I was in the Air Force a guy in my unit passed away of appendicitis. He went in three times if I remember right. They told him he either had a stomach virus or a flu. He went to the clinic on base. His family yelled at the base officers at his funeral. My paternal grandfather also passed away from appendicitis in 1946 on Guam while finishing his enlistment from WW2. I've never had it. Most people I know who have had it had experiences similar to yours and survived well with little hospital time. I'm very glad you're ok. I think this kind of thing is what could be a close call. Had you not gone in when you did it may have burst and then you may not have received attention in time and would be somewhere else right now. Good to see you back.

I loved this, thank you! Heading in for a myomectomy this Thursday (which is oddly similar to your surgery- several small incisions and a stomach full of air!) I'm pretty nervous about the whole procedure but hearing your experiences reminded me how to keep a positive outlook on this kind of thing. I'm sure I'll say something loopy based on how last time I was under I kept telling the nurse how much I loved the hospital socks and how I wanted to keep them because they were the best socks I've ever owned but hey- like you said, trying to have fun with it! Seeing you bounce back and be so open/positive about your own medical procedure is giving me a lot of strength right now! Also been thinking a lot about Logan Ninefingers' quote about how it's better to do something than to live in fear of it (which feels pretty applicable) Best wishes on your recovery!

I had appendicitis too about 5 years ago, but totally different story. The doctors knew exactly what was wrong with me because i could describe the pain normally (in on single place, on my right side), BUT apparently i waited way too much before i went to hospital (to not miss my exams...) and my appendix was very swollen and inflamated and somehow moved from it's original place. So during surgery they could remove it easily and had to cut a whole to take it out THROUGH my abdominal muscle, which made the recovery last about 1 month, instead of a few days. It was awful.

I am glad you are having a quick recovery! I guessed appendicitis from near the beginning of your story and never wavered. I have a similar story but with a much quicker progression. I drove myself to the emergency room both times. In between visits I went through the registration line for my final semester of college dragging a chair. I then went to my advisor and asked him to contact my professors to let them know I wouldn’t be in class for a few days, and he was shocked that I was calmly standing there telling him that I was about to have my appendix taken out. At this point the pain was intense and FINALLY localized to the right side.

I had a weird experience with appendicitis. I had symptoms for a little over a month. And everyday I had a different symptom. Most days I was in pain. Somedays I had the most extreme nausea. Sometimes like you, I just felt uncomfortable and off. They couldn't figure it out because I had general pain and it didn't hurt too much when they pressed down. There was also an abscess right beside my appendix to add to everything. I missed school for most of the month. And then to top it off, they forgot to stitch me up at 2 out of the 3 incision sites. It was quite the experience. So I understand the frustrations. I hope you recover quickly.

Oof glad you are ok now and the surgery went smoothly. Take care and hope you recover quickly💕 As soon as you said "stomach discomfort & fever" I knew it will be appendix issue XD Those are annoying little fellas. My mum also had it and for her it started similarly and we thought it's just indigestion but she of course was "playing it cool" to the point she could barely walk and she started to feel it on the right side the most. The 'funny' thing in the beginning I told her it might be appendicitis but she brushed it off. Finally she felt so bad she went to the doctor (we have a clinic in front of our house, it's not far so she somehow made it there cause I wasn't at home to help her unfortunately) and they immediately called for a medical transport for her to the hospital, so she managed to grab few things from the house and go there asap. Btw as a biology and medicine geek it sounds like you might have had a laparoscopy hence 2 smaller cuts. Also I will say waiting 40 minutes for an appointment doesn't sound that bad (although I'm sure it felt like eternity), in my country you wait up to 6 hours in the ER if you are not in "a state that's threatening life" -_-

I'm so glad you are doing better! That must have been really scary. Abdominal maladies are hard to diagnose without imaging because all those organs are "dumb" muscles. When they are aggravated they cramp, which is more of a general pain impulse and very difficult to isolate. I had to have my gallbladder removed and the pain was very similar to what you described. The doctors all dismissed it because the pain wasn't isolated to one spot. Turned out I had a number of stones in my bile duct and one in my gallbladder that was the size of a ping pong ball! The whole thing was necrotic and I had sepsis. My liver had even started failing because it was so bad. Doctors kept saying I just had gas until my eyes turned yellow and someone finally listened to me. If you are worried about popping a suture by sneezing/coughing, you can try a pregnancy support band, but I found them to irritate the incision too much. Placing your hand across the area and applying some pressure does help. The gas they pump into your belly is one of the worst parts of surgery. Walking around helps a lot, so keep that up!

I had a very similar experience! It felt like horrible indigestion at first, and I had a real bad pain when I peed. My urgent care prescribed something for a bladder infection, but I had a fever and aches all night so I went back. When she pressed down on my appendix then it hurt like hell so I was whisked to the hospital. It definitely wasn’t a sharp pain like they say with appendicitis, it was all over pain/aches.

My appendicitis was similar, i did have the sharp pain in my right side, but it started off as this big pain everywhere in my stomach, then it eventually moved to the right. Glad your recovering well! Hope your scar won't be as noticeable as mine still is after a year!

I knew right away what it was! I went to the ER twice the first time they said oh you are just sore from working out. Then went home and had to go back a few hours later because I was trying to drink water and threw up. I am so glad you are doing better!

I had a feeling it was appendicitis, not because I have had it, but because I have had kidney stones before and some of the symptoms are similar - and when I had kidney stones the doctors thought I had appendicitis at first. I'm so very glad that you are okay and you are on the mend!

I wasnt certain, but my best guess was appendicitis. Yours sounded like mine but with a slower process and with more interim steps. I woke up at 02:00 with discomfort, not pain. I knew it was something of it woke me up, but I waited for my GP to open in the morning. Called them at 08:00, was seen at 09:00. The doctor observed only about half of the indicators for appendicitis, so he referred me to the hospital for a scan, just to be sure. I awaited results at home, then was scheduled for surgery at 17:00. All this happened in the same day. Surgery is laparoscopic. Two 5mm holes and a 10mm hole. One is used to inflate the abdomen like a balloon, so they can get around in there, another is for the camera, and the last is for the surgical tools. It doesn't sound invasive, but you have to relearn how to sit up with the weakened muscles as a result. I tried the wrong way, and the nurse stopped me and showed me the less painful way. I'm also like you with the meds. I hate the head spinning, and I'd rather feel the pain than that. The part I hate the most is waking up from general anesthesia. It's a process, starting from zero control or even awareness of my own body. I had to find each part/function and take it back. First memory of waking up was hearing my name with instructing to leave the face mask alone as I needed the oxygen. I didn't know about a mask. Then I heard my own voice respond, explaining that I just wanted to scratch my nose. I didn't know about voice, nose, or alleviating itches or even itches. Then, I felt a change, the nurse slowly and careful released the grip on my wrist. The wrist was new. Then I felt my hand move under the mask. Those were both new, too. Then I rubbed the side of my nose with my fingertip. That was a relief I didn't know I needed. The whole process was like that. "Are you cold?" 'Yes.' "Would a warm blanket help?" . . . I had no idea. Then they put a warm blanket on me and I knew the answer. I'm glad you're well. Take it easy and enjoy recovery. Thank your man for taking care of you. He's a good one.

I'm glad you're feeling better know. The appendix is such a useless organ in our body and it causes so much trouble. You didn't have the normal symptoms but, in my nursing school, we learned also the symptoms you've had. You're lucky it got detected in time because it could've gotten a lot worse! Hope you continue to recover well!

Sounds like Appendix. That happened to me on Mother’s Day 2010. It felt like cramps pain for me, I was throwing up, then I had fever 🤒 that wouldn’t go down. I also noticed that I was really swollen. I was a size 0 back then and I couldn’t put size 8 pants on at all. I eventually went to the hospital 🏥 and ended up getting surgery. I got lucky 🍀 because it was about to burst . Was in the hospital 2 days and then went home. I hope 🤞🏽 you get a speedy recovery.

I'm glad you are recovering well and seem to be a good spirits! I've had the CT scan with 'contrast' and it 100% feels like you are peeing your pants. Its the weirdest thing. When I was in my teens I started having kidney issues and the first time I went to the hospital with a kidney stone I was convinced I was dying lol. Its always a relief when they tell you its just something common and you have a 99.9% chance of being just fine. But its still really scary up to that point!. Your hubby was right though! You are super brave and tough! Its hard to go into the hospital and face all that alone.
