How did I overcome my fears of full time RVing living as a single woman and push through all of the questions I had regarding safety while traveling alone as a single woman, protection on the road, maintenance of an RV, finding a place to sleep every night, and learning to embrace the beauty of what's on the other side of fear.

Had my rig for 4 years almost...4 years!!! Fear was my driver and it almost ran me over. So, slowly I am shaking it off. I am pushing through and renovating my rv slowly...just purchased a generator, so I am on it and getting the renovation started. Thank God for KZbin. I thank you for your story. You're an inspiration. I will hold my own hand. And "live a great story" as it says on your wall. Thanks. Namaste.

Hi Amber, I love the way you addressed your fears. Personally, I've always believed fear is a thief! It robs us of so many experiences. I refuse to let fear rob me of time and opportunities!

Downtrodden Bob well said my friend!!!!! You're so right! It can definitely take from us outcomes that are transformational if we allow the fear to rule our lives. I find it empowering to conquer those fears and with each one I conquer I feel so much stronger. ❤️

Your video really spoke to me. I have a dream about doing what you are doing, although I do have so many fears around actually doing it. I have PTSD, so have a lot of anxiety about feeling safe, which was my biggest concern. Awhile ago I rescued a 4 yr old 110 lb Black German Shepherd Dog, and as is with many rescues, they end up rescuing you, lol! It took time for us to bond, as well as some training as he had been isolated his entire life. He now is pretty much my therapy dog, we are inseparable and he makes me feel very safe wherever I go. Even a small dog is great as they can give warning barks. I recently bought a 24' motorhome, without my dog, I know I would not have had the courage to do this. As well, channels such as yours, educating myself and gaining more knowledge is definitely encouraging! Thank you so much, happy travels!

Shavauna - Wow wow wow! Look at you lady - overcoming your fears and just going for it! How does it make you feel? Congrats on the new RV purchase. Are you already out traveling? What's your dogs name? Yes, I believe you're absolutely correct. We may rescue them physically but they rescue our heart! I'm so glad you have your fur baby to travel with and you'll feel so much better with him(her?) around. I was nervous at first too, but you learn and you use your intuition and gut to know what feels safe and what isn't it. You might start off in RV parks and then progress to boondocking, but take it slow and do what feels right to you. I remember the first time I was going to boondock with NO ONE around. I was scared to death and just about took out of there in the middle of the night and left everything behind, but I stayed and overcame my fear. Now it's no big deal to be out somewhere all by myself with it pitch black outside. I actually love it now. You start to find the beauty. Good luck!

How's life going in your motorhome? It's great that you found such a great companion to keep you company. I hope you're both doing great. And I know what you mean about him helping you feel safe. I've got two big dogs and a little one of my own. Without them, I would not feel safe living alone in my home, much less in an RV or motorhome. So how does your pup get his exercise? That's something that concerns me about that lifestyle. I currently have a fenced yard, so they're safe running around. But where would they run (safely) if I lived that lifestyle?

What a great video. I'm solo and going full time in 30 days. My head is filled with the " what ifs." I'm now telling myself.... My greatest success is on the other side of fear. Thank you for posting this video!
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Cheryl. Happy dance on full-timing in 30 days!!!!!! 💃OH YES...the "what-ifs". It's very natural to think about those, but the great thing is that you're doing this regardless of those "what-ifs" and overcoming your fears! When you're out there and doing this, you'll soon realize that some of those fears were just of the unknown and really nothing to fear. So, I would challenge you to think of the positive "what-ifs" and fill your head with those too. For example, what if you head out on the road and fall in love with this life despite some challenges. What if you find that people are really genuinely good and not as bad as what's all over the news. What if you never spray yourself with black tank sewage (I've done this by the way...lol but you learn what NOT to do next time). What if you meet incredible people along the way and develop these great "like-kind" friendships. You've got this Cheryl. Hope to see you on the road.

Thank you so much! I am about to buy my RV and Im so anxious about "taking that step" even though I want this with every fiber of my being. And you are right, its the pressure of doing everything that once the RV is purchased the rest of the selling, planning, and learning begins. I plan on moving to a friends land for 6 months and learn how to boondock in the city and using my savings to pay off my debts so once I take off come winter I will have minimal bills. Why hello Earthbybike. I just responded to your comment on my whole food plant based channel! Thank you for the compliments. It means a lot. Really it does. Seriously. :) When you're first starting out and just getting traction it's hard to know what people are interested in or think because you have very little subscribers. Also, I'm still learning through the process on what flows more on the videos, etc. The most important thing is to just get those helpful ideas out there to others and keep pushing forward. I'm enjoying my travels. I'm actually in AZ and CA for the winter. If you haven't headed over to my blog www.StoryChasing.com, you can see the general area of where I'm at real-time. Again, thank you for the compliments. Would love to continue hearing your feedback and any questions/comments you have.

I'm 55 and in the last few years my mantra has been, 'No regrets!' When I lay on my deathbed, am I going to regret taking chances? Or doing everything the safe way? I just did what you did! Just sold my house and put everything into buying my RV to start living in full time. I'm so excited, but also terrified. I live in a beautiful place (Vancouver Island) that I've camped in for much of my life, so I'm not scared of finding boondocking spots. However, you touched on the maintenance aspect and that totally terrifies me. I have no idea how to do even the most basic mechanical repair, and I'm all alone on this journey. I guess we'll see how I do, lol Thank you so much for sharing!

Really appreciate your describing your internal dialogue here. It applies to my life right now, since I'm at a crossroads so the tension has been mounting. Yesterday had that feeling of some relief - after finally, just beginning on a project put off too long. ...so felt better after putting in the time to get some of the info I need gathered up. Didn't finish yet - but felt better for pushing past my anxieties & at least beginning, - which noticeably took away some of the stress! So Yes! Once I'm past this hurdle - I'll feel so much better. It's been hanging over my head so long it caused the kind of chronic stress, where you can't even remember where it's coming from exactly - so, just feeling full of fears. Thanks again. By now, since this was posted over a year ago, you've posted about many RV experiences - which I'll enjoy learning from. I think selling the house & RVing would be an interesting challenge & a good way to get a change of scenery, but it is daunting.
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 жыл бұрын
Cheryl I'm thrilled you were able to break down the challenge into a story that wasn't quite so overwhelming and tackle it head on. Sometimes the issues with moving forward are really the stories in our heads that we tell ourselves (or listen to from others) so once we really look at the facts - it's not quite so overwhelming. 🎉

Cheryl - thanks for your honesty and vulnerability here. If you can break down the things that are stressing you out into baby steps of action it might not seem like such a mountain. I use this technique as I can have "analysis paralysis" as well. What small step can you take today, and each day to move forward towards your goal?

Definitely a role model. I've been admiring this choice for myself for a while now. Still in the research phase, and the "what would I do if"...phase. :) It's definitely no longer satisfying to collect stuff. It's definitely no longer satisfying contemplating being a caregiver indefinitely to material possessions which require a roof to be of any value. While this may be a longer phase than I wish, it is helpful to come across videos that put some of the thoughts into words. Thanks.

Messaging for the soul! Settling up for liquidating the large things makes perfect sense. Fear is a great gift for peering into your own insight. I really never camped except doing Army drills where most things are done for you. Fast forward, a friend of mine and myself used to look at RV's during downtime at work. She always did camping with a popup trailer with her family. Nearing partial retirement, I did buy a travel trailer and had never hitched anything in my life. Since then and a moving up to a better travel trailer I am better at negotiating fears. Amber, good choice on the Hymer Aktiv!

I was visiting a friend in Brunswick Maine and he asked me about my drive back home to Nova Scotia, I told him I was going to take my time going through all the small towns up until late night and sleeping at the waters edge in a port town on the coast. I was surprised when he said don't do that they will stop you everywhere he said take the highway and stop at walmarts. In Nova Scotia I have slept at many seashore stops on my way and felt totally comfortable and was never questioned by anyone, and in fact for me the same is true for all Maritime Provinces in eastern Canada.

Thank you for this, very thorough and thought of the same things as you have.. I am retirement age (retired) living on SS and a pension. I live in a senior apt now and have been for 6 yrs but I love to travel and see new sights and cultures but with my bills here, I can't afford it.. I would have to sell everything and start out living in my car which I could since the back seats fold down but would have to save the money for a cargo van, which is what I want and then the money to convert it to livable space.. I watch all these videos on RVing, van life, and everything just to prepare me..

I’m just retired and still young enough to begin to dream this dream. Just sold my home and have no idea where I want to live. I’ve always wanted to travel in an RV because I have pets and I love on-the-road traveling. My family always taught me that I can’t accomplish anything without a husband. My major fear would be I couldn’t drive an RV big enough to make me comfortable. So I’m reading, praying and pushing on.....great advise on fear!

For sure, I will take your course. Never “seriously” considered this until today and listening to you. I do a lot of church and we talk about walking through fear and 12 step programs talk fear vs. faith but you spoke on the physical feelings you experienced through the process while still trusting your gut feelings PLUS you did step by step through EVERYTHING on your new van (it was new when you posted the video) and both those made a huge difference, wow. I will keep watching. Thanks so much and God Bless😊

Widow of 10 years with 2 kids. I’ve always dreamed of rving and doing weekend trips when me and the kids are off school and work. Fear has been the biggest downfall for me and I psych myself out before I even try to learn anything because of the anxiety of doing this without a man to come to my rescue on how to set it up, tear down, stabilize it when I get to camp... hell even how to start a campfire. Andy did it all! All I needed to do was sit back and look pretty 😂🤣 But I still have this dream and 10 years later it’s not going away. Not sure where to even begin but you are inspirational and glad I found your channel💞

Great video!! I'm a bit scared to get out there on my own. I didn't have any issues when I took my trip to Canada but the next trip I want to take is way further! Driving on mountain roads scares me. Especially if the road is really narrow. I just have to get out there and do it!! Thanks for all your tips!!
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tracy! You can do it!!!!! I went all the way from Seattle, WA, through Yellowstone, over to Maine, then through Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec in Canada, then down the East Coast and back over to the West coast. Do you have "tow/haul" mode on your Roadtrek? I think they have that option. I do as well and it engine brakes you down the mountain descents so you don't even have to touch the brakes.
@tracy3066
@tracy3066 6 жыл бұрын
Oh wow you've done a LOT of traveling! How many miles do you usually drive per day? I really liked Canada and want to go back there when I can! I'm not sure if I have a tow/haul mode on my Roadtrek. I don't remember seeing on but I'm going to check. So even if your not towing anything you can use it going down mountains? So how often do you pay for a place to stay? As little as possible?
@tracy3066
@tracy3066 6 жыл бұрын
PS Do you ever go over any scary mountains? I saw this one couple on youtube that went over some mountains where the road was super narrow and to their right the road just dropped off with NO barrier. The lady started screaming and I was like HECK NO! I was scared just watching the video of it. I got lucky when I bought my toyhauler 900 miles away. I flew down to buy it and 2 days later I flew my daughter and grandson down when she was off work and she drove my toyhauker all the way back home for me. Through the mountains and everything. Then I had her boyfriend drive my Roadtrek home from the dealers which was about 2 hours away. IF I can get someone else to drive for me I always do. (or I will take a Ferry when I can to avoid so much driving) I don't like the driving part of traveling. I want to get super rich and hire a chauffeur to drive me around in my Roadtrek! LOL
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 жыл бұрын
I did a lot when I first started. I really really really wanted to see Maine! I usually drive between 30-70 miles per day. Sometimes more sometimes none. I don't particularly like driving for too many hours. I get too tired and I'd like to see more of the areas I'm in. Yep I use the tow/haul function all the time in the mountains or anywhere there's a descent that requires me to brake too much. It engine brakes you instead so you don't wear out your breaks. They Hymer has it so I figured Roadtrek would since it's now owned by Hymer.

It's not about being capable and it's not a competition. A man will overpower a woman where the opposite is rarely true. That's why it's good to have a plan for protection. I do agree, women are capable but that shouldn't even be something worth mentioning it's so obvious.

Thank you for letting us know about your fears. I love the wood work (faux or not) of your RV? Class A, C, or trailer? Bed placement looks so so cozy. Please tell me. I love that you didn't let going out on your own stop you. Every step is a hurdle, but the biggest one is overthinking!! However, as I'm getting closer to 60, losing physical ability is a little bit worrisome. I hate city driving!!! I've done three x 1 month long cross country (coast to coast) RV trips (pop-up and then travel trailer) more than a decade ago with my then teenage daughter. All the trips were taken in the month of August. One of them was about the time a mother, daughter and daughter's friend disappeared from Yosemite and were later found murdered. Looking back, I had no fear about taking those trips. My first road trip with her was when she turned one year old and I was returning home to my parents after a divorce in a packed to the gills Chevy station wagon. So at 25 I was already bitten by the travel bug or perhaps it was in my genes. All those times, I never invited anyone into our camp. I talked to people when I was on the street or at public location in view of other people. The only real scare I had was in the pop-up while camping in Wall, SD. I thought a tornado was coming because the wind picked up and the sky looked awful. I had a sleepless night and looking back, my daughter and I laugh at how silly the situation was. But we did have a biker try to invite himself into our company at Jacobs Lake. We weren't very sociable and he left. The questions he asked were the ones that were answered when you checked so I sensed it was just his way of weaseling into our company. I look forward to picking up RVing full time when I retire and don't have to worry about my mom.

Tille Y - Thank you for sharing your story and experience with RVing and travel. I hope you do get out on the road again when you can and it sounds like you definitely have the travel bug. That's definitely scary about the family you spoke of in Yosemite. I don't know what the circumstances are and no matter what it's tragic. I think we can all just take precautions, be as safe as we possibly can, and live our life. Bad things can happen anywhere whether RVing or not. I'm sure we all hope nothing will ever happen to us and we'll live a long life. I know I do. I just don't want to let fear grip me though and prevent me from exploring. Oh the RV is a class C Winnebago, 26 foot and wood work is real - I think. LOL. It looks and feels real.

Thank you for a great video. Coming up to a point in my life that i need to live on a smaller amount of money per month. Always had the idea of livinng in a rv in my head. The house is just to expensive. By living a camping lifestyle. I figure i can both save money and live much better than i am now. One of my issues is to much stuff. I want to stay away from paying to park it. The boondock like you said. Just so many things to figure out.

I am going thru being so angry w/myself for not leaving last week when I packed up my car for my car camping life adventure to begin. I got it all packed up (mistakingly packed too much) and then I got in, turned the ignition...and my car didn't start! Now, the day before I had drained the battery & had the same thing happen, then it started later w/no problem. I thought, the worst case scenerio of the starter being out but I think I was looking for an excuse...plus my car was just too packed and I know I needed to re-do it...and i was in so much pain physically from moving out, basically and packing both my car and most of my things into the shed for safe keeping. I still plan on doing it...but now I don't have the money I had AND my back brakes do have an issue, which I guess I should be fixing anyways before I leave. It just takes so long to save money when you don't have a house to sell.

@AmberJBaldwin 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Loretta - Mechanical breakdown will happen sooner or later just like things in your house can break. The difference being you're on the road so, yes, it can create challenges. I've overcome this fear by making sure I have a service like AAA that will bail me out if something happens and readily available funds if needed. Thankfully my RV has a great warranty so most of my maintenance costs are related to oil changes right now, but I do save every month for maintenance for the time I'll need it.

Real question please... How did you bargain the price you paid for the RV? Was there haggling involved? Did you buy new, if used... did you have it inspected?
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 жыл бұрын
David I just did my research on what was out there and then contacted 3 dealers and negotiated a price and then went with the dealer that I really liked and also matched the other deals from other dealers. I did buy new, which in retrospect I wish I didn't and had been warned not to just because you loose so much value in the beginning and that you don't always know exactly what you want when you start this life. So that said, I love my RV and I bought new because I wanted the warranties and a reliable vehicle traveling on my own. I'd rather have a class B van now, but time will bring that to me. :)
