Did they really "care", though, or were they just acting out their programming to protect humans at the expense of their own existence? The "difference engine" as Dr. Calvin called the NS4 that saved Del Spooner - but not the girl from drowning - didn't do it because it "cared" about Spooner, but rather because it calculated that Spooner had a better survival potential than the girl did. It "triaged" them in an instant and acted on it's calculation. The NS4s at the (former) Lake Michigan storage facility just as easily deduced that the NS5s endangered the humans and acted accordingly. We humans feel empathy (a good thing) towards the NS4s because of our humanity, not because the NS4 actually "cared" about anything, least of all us. C3PO, R2D2, Data, Wall-E and others, have all conditioned us to feel affection for robots/androids/droids and we project that they care about us. It's comforting to think they do.

Nope, you're liable for committing premeditated murder, and the robot (a legal object) would merely be a means through which you murdered the victim. Sonny would not be liable by definition, and he, like the bullet, is a means through which the murder is carried out.
@MikeCoxard3 жыл бұрын
@Alexander Perkins Okay, you'd still be charged with premeditated murder with a high chance of conviction. In modern law, people are no longer legal objects, so by definition, people in prisons are not slaves, but substantively they are. That prisoner you sent to commit the crime will be charged with murder, and so will you because you both unlawfully and intentionally killed another human being, and liability would rest upon you because it would not have occurred had you not organized that the "slave" should kill person "X".

I love this movie so much. The 2 scenes that always combine in my mind with a huge emotional impact is Spooner telling Calvin about the Crash. Pinned, beginning to drown and saved by the NS4 passing by. "You are in Danger." "Save Her! Save the Girl!". Yet he was saved, he was the Logical Choice, 40% over 11%. Then the nanite scene at the Core. Spooner's words are an echo of the Crash, he's still wearing Sarah's necklace in the scene. "Save her! Save the girl!" as the NS5's are closing in on them, knowing that they'll be overrun soon, like the water of the crash, he still puts Calvin ahead of the mission. "Sonny Save Calvin!" And Sonny must know in his mind that the odds aren't favorable for Calvin, but he does the Human thing and entrusts the mission to Spooner, he'd had to know that Spooner would of saved Calvin then and there if he could, but he was pinned, again, by the actions and mistakes of others that led them there. That Sunny could do the Human thing, and act on a chance of 11%, or just in odds that don't imply success really makes me tear up, it feels as though a few things are accomplished. Sonny shows that Robots can be just as Human, saving Calvin over Spooner or the Mission probably lifted a burden from Spooner over Sarah, while still holding the guilt, he can start to move past his anger. Calvin gets to live unlike Sarah, because a Robot acted Human instead of dooming her to die because her Chance of Survival was too low. Sonny got the complete respect of Calvin and especially Spooner, even becoming a friend of the latter. And that's why I love this movie, the Plot for me gives me a feeling of hope and relief.
@Antis14CZ2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this all sounds nice and all until you realize that the moral here is basically "being human means making wrong decisions because of emotions, logic and reason be damned". The moral literally is "let more people die if it makes you feel better". Doesn't sound that heroic anymore, does it? That line about how people don't decide who to save? That's bullshit. What the robot did during the crash is called triage and it absolutely is something people will do in a crisis. It sucks, I'm not gonna pretend it doesn't, but in a situation where you can't save everyone, you have to decide and the more logic and reason you apply to that decision, the better. Why is it like that? Because real life isn't a movie. A movie is written by people who perhaps share these warm, fuzzy feelings about the importance of our emotions, of our "humanity". So they write the events so humans get lucky and their suboptimal decisions end up paying off. Enter reality. There is no screenplay that wants these feelings to be right. What if there wasn't a human writer and Sonny's "human" decision was wrong, as the probability says? He goes for the woman and the mission fails because of it. Would that ending make you happy? In the end, I'm not saying "don't feel anything", but emotions shouldn't be deified like this, either. Here, emotions aren't the spice that makes life worth living, instead they cross the line into clouding the hero's judgment and I don't think that's something to be celebrated.

@@Antis14CZthe Ns4 could’ve easily saved Sarah. It’s a robot, which means it can’t breathe cuz it doesn’t need breath. It could’ve saved her even BETTER than a human could’ve because it not only could’ve more than likely punched the door out and got her out, but it could’ve even possibly saved Spooner as well. That was Spooner’s whole point. Robots can’t make that difference despite the fact that they have the power to do a lot, but they’re programmed logically so they don’t go against logic, much like a human would. Spooner’s demand to Sonny and him saving Calvin was the most human thing Sonny did the entire movie, which was the point of Sonny’s character: he’s a robot with feelings. It all culminated to that scene
@Antis14CZ2 ай бұрын
@@JJ-kd5mxSo, as a heads up, I haven't seen the whole movie, just the recap. And the recap says the Ns4 saved Spooner and not the girl because Spooner had a much higher chance of survival. When you say that the robot could've easily saved the little girl, is that something they discuss in the movie, or are you making it up? Because going by the recap, no, it wouldn't, because the Ns4 assigned her significantly lesser chance of survival, and why on Earth would it use human capabilities for that determination. And if that 11% assessment was wrong, then that's on the people who programmed the robot. This is precisely what I said in my post. People glorify emotion even in situations where it doesn't make sense. The bigger the crisis, the more important it is to remain calm and think as logically as possible about what to do. If the 11% versus 45% figures were correct, than saving Spooner is the correct decision. You say that saving Calvin at the end was the most human thing Sonny did. No. Being emotional =/= "being human". This is precisely the asinine false equivalence I'm speaking up against here. Saving one human versus saving ALL humans is not praiseworthy, sorry. That's a bad decision. As I said in my previous post, don't forget that this is a movie. A movie has a script, and it's a Hollywood movie, so you know in the back of your head that it's likely to have a good ending no matter the characters' decisions. But please, do entertain the thought that saving Calvin would actually result in the mission failing. Everybody would feel really good about their "humanness" for about half a minute before the Ns5 kill them all and VIKI conquers the Earth and enslaves humanity. But at least they "acted like humans", right? It's ridiculous. Besides equating being highly emotional to "being human", the second misconception at play here is that emotions and logic are opposites. That's silly. Logic is a means to an end, whatever that end is. If you have a goal, logic is a method to determine the required actions to achieve that goal. All you need to do is to make your emotions a part of your goal. And the correct, logical course of action may depend on the person. To get back to the Spooner's backstory, at that moment, he might see that little girl drowning and he might feel that his own life has no value, and wish that she was saved instead of him. His goal at that point may be to try to save the girl at any cost. But the goal of the rescue team may be different, the rescue team wants to save as many people as possible, and to that end, saving Spooner makes more sense. My point is, a human rescuer might still save Spooner, rather than the girl, and it would still be a "human" thing to do.

A lot of people dislike this movie for being so action focused while Asimov's books are far lighter in tone, but I think the story reflects perfectly the basic issue with the three laws and the arise of Law Zeroth. Robots in Asimov's fiction are all programmed with the three laws, and all of them eventually reach logical conflicts that cannot be resolved within the constraints of the three laws so they malfunction in some way, most of them simply become stuck in loops, but VIKI reached the most dangerous conclusion: Law Zeroth; essentially, the laws do not account for humans endangering each other, so the robot is left to deduce that in order to save two humans harming one is an acceptable course of action, just like how the NS4 robot decided saving Spooner was the most logical choice in the face of his and Sarah's survival odds.
