This song is actually a sequel to the song "Hot Rod Race" by Arkie Shibley which would be another great song for them to review. Note the opening line "Have heard the story of the hot rod race where the Ford and Mercury were setting the pace. That story's true I'm here to say 'cause I was driving that Model A".

"Little Nash Rambler" by the Playmates is probably the most humorous of the old car tunes. It progresses from a very slow pace to a very fast one, as a Caddy driver relates his annoyance/frustration at not being able to lose a Nash Rambler that was tailing him while repeatedly honking it's horn. The final line is guaranteed for a an old-fashioned horse 🐎 laugh.

@Vanessa Mikawa, The Stray Cats are an excellent suggestion! "Stray Cat Strut", " Rock This Town" and "Look At That Cadillac" exemplify Rockabilly without a doubt, and I hope Jay and Amber can make room for them soon! But then there's Carl Perkins, who did the original version of Blue Suede Shoes" a year before Elvis Presley covered it and made it a smash hit..."Be Bop A Lula"by Gene Vincent is good too. I'd throw in "Pink Cadillac" by Bruce Springsteen just for giggles & grins... Thanks for reminding me of the band and the genre☺ S.W.

@@orbuckeye896 I saw the Commander several times at the Dillo and quite honestly don't remember if any of them were being recorded. Funny (interesting, not funny) story, though. I moved from Austin to Salt Lake in 1976 (long story which I'd almost prefer to forget). Jim Franklin, the artist that did the cover and MC that introduced them on "Live From Deep In The Heart Of Texas" came to Utah in the late 70s to hang with ZZ Top in Moab, apparently they were building homes into a canyon down there and he and an old friend came and stayed with me for several days in SLC. I lived in a duplex and my neighbors had these two dogs that they kept chained in the backyard. Terrible way to treat a dog and they responded how just about anything would that was chained...they were angry. I warned Jim not to approach them because they were fine when you walked up to them, but would attack when you left. He said he had a "way" with dogs and paid no heed. And sure enough as he got up to leave them, one clamped onto his face and just about wouldn't let go. We had to take him to the emergency room for stitches. Definitely not funny.

Everyone from Janis Joplin to Charlie Daniels played there. And most all the staff worked for free! Their only compensation was normally whatever Stew was cooking in the kitchen and free beer. George Thorogood wrote such fun songs! You should listen to “Keep Your Hands To Yourself” and “Bad To The Bone”. Another song that’s like this one was sung by the actor Robert Mitchum “Thunder Road”. It’s about a moonshine runner trying to keep ahead of the sheriff.

Like your suggestions ! I learned there’s an interesting backstory of Nature Boy. Ever wonder about the unique style ? It was originally a Yiddish melody, and there was a lawsuit brought by the originator of it against this guy who added his lyrics onto it. Nat had no idea, he thought it was composed from scratch by the man who presented it to him after a show.

In the mid 90's I was approached by the elderly middle-aged couple that owned the local watering hole a few dozen yards from my apartment in Columbus Ohio. Long story short the owner says she's got this band that's got persnickety stuff in their contract like queen sized beds in the hotel and they have to be fed. She proposed myself and my room mate, both of whom work in the back-of-the-house in foodservice, cook dinner for the band in exchange for not only free entrance to the show, but free drinks all night. Hell yes! The band was led by George Frayne, aka Commander Cody, and his Lost Planet Airmen. Needless to say it was daylight before I Ieft that party, and a very long day at work the next day. 'Still got that pic of me and Tim post dinner with the band on the 'fridge. 'LOVE me some Commander Cody. Great memories of a real foot-stompin' good time!

When this song was written in the 1950's, the Grapevine was a road from Los Angeles North to Bakersfield, over the mountains. The Hwy was 99. It wound through the mountains like a Grapevines at the bottom of the hill. The highway was 3 lanes, a Northbound lane, and a Southbound lane, and a lane in the middle for passing from either direction. It was called the Suicide Lane. That is how the Cadi passed him. Overdrive is another gear usually used on cars in the 1950's. This song was from the 1970's. Like 1972 I believe.

Amber's outburst saying "Yeeess" right from the beginning of this video comes from sheer joy. The best music demands emotional response, and both of you aren't afraid to be honest with your reactions. That's what keeps me coming back to watch your first hearing of songs I've loved all my life. I have two suggestions for story songs, "Andersonville", by Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men. It's about the civil war Confederate POW camp, and based on the Alvin family history. Second suggestion "Taneytown" by Steve Earle, about life down south before civil rights protests. Thanks for taking the time to read this, if you actually see it. I've got 50 + years of music to share, and stories about every song I like and think it's worth your time to hear. Thanks

A friend of mine from elementary through high school played lead guitar with Commander Cody from the late 90s on.
