His services to the country included bringing in huge investments such as the largest rubber factory in South Asia, the largest cement factory in South Asia, bringing the internet to Sri Lanka and most of all he obtained various concessions to the country. For example, services such as obtaining GSP + and the 1990 Ambulance Service are his functions. There are many more. Many of them have been forgotten by Sri Lankans.

As a expatriate of Sri Lanka now living in Australia it makes me sad and angry that incompetent leaders have been elected to positions of power with a lack of experience to run the economy of such a wonderful country and appointments of family members to critical departments of government who lack the expertise to make sound decisions Look what has happened to the Sri Lankan Air line and the financial debt it is in .The crippling loans to build the infrastructure for a port in Hambantota that the Chinese govt has a one hundred year lease on .The new airport in Hambantota that is under utilised all this and more questionable loans from the Chinese govt. The govt needs to reconsider reconnecting with India ..Japan USA and countries favourable to their best interests including Australia who have a good diplomatic relationship and Sri Lankan’s living in Australia Appoint competent people to manage the treasury and govt posts.

Golden rule, never take loans as was taken in the past. The Chinese were so Powerful in SL that local media derided India and Indians. Ultimately India has a moral responsibility to lift Sri Lanka. Afterall Sri Lanka is a cousin. The Chinese will not have the same feeling as an average Indian will have for Sri Lanka. But since they were suited and booted SL chose them. Indians will always have a special place for Sri Lankans.

In USA every year every person file taxes showing their income for the last year, and according to that they either get a refund from the government or owe taxes to the government. This is also used to determine if an individual gets government benefits and even a free ride to university. I am surprised why SL does not have a system like that. There are so many individuals in SL who makes lots of money but does not pay any taxes on their earned income or profit. I think no one pay taxes on the earned profits at the Colombo Stock Exchange. In USA there's so much taxes and when Sri Lankan migrate most of them are surprised, but very quickly adopt to the system. Sri Lanka needs to implement better taxation protocols.

Because in US and most western countries we the people don't really have issues payment tax because the government has built a comfortable infrastructure for all to benefit. While in Sri Lanka why would any sane person (wealthy) should bother when the infrastructure is 💩 and transportation is 💩. Motor vehicle tax is 300% or more iirc with 💩 roads. One can always argue the more tax income for government, more money in budget for development but not in the case of Sri Lanka. Most money is pocketed by the leaders in politics and don't see any significant developments for decades. Private/ Family run companies do well because the Family's entire financial resources depend on it and the company's value increases with good management. But Rajapakse is running the country as if it's his private enterprise, his family and his cronies (Buddhist monks) wealth is increasing, but the country has gone bankrupt. Politicians, monks, and the ones in power have never really earned an income, and nor are they able to appreciate the peoples' problems.

As a country we need a flexible approach toward foreign policy without taking sides or undermining critical economic situation we are suffering from currently.sri lanka have the potential to become a fast developing country but current limitations of our leaders mindsets will affect countries growth.uniting every political camp toward building up our country as first priority will give us a one last chance of survival.its impossible I know but accepting defeat and rising up to the challenge is the only option left for our country now. we, those under indian sphere of influence, always are praised for our culture. What this means is that the foreigners are encouraging us to stay like we were thousands of years ago.
