Back in the 1970's i used to grow my mushrooms in quart jars with only 3 shot glasses of long grain brown rice and equal part of water and 1/8 teaspoon on crushed gypsum rock 15 lbs of pressure for 30 minutes let cool over night and always kept one jar of mycelium that had not started pining yet. Under 3 weeks old and i would inoculate my jars on full moon and 3 to 4 weeks later i had jars growing full of mushrooms and i would take the lids off and put gallon size bags loosely over the top of jar and they would grow right out the top of jars. And sometimes i would grown 5 to 10 cases of jars with the lids still on in the boxes they came in stacked 5 feet high and they would fill the jars with mushrooms and my cost was around 3 cents per jar! I am now 64 years old and am going to start growing again and it blows me away at all the effort and extra work that is put into this now. I would get a jar or 2 out of every couple of cases of jars that would contaminate but was no big deal. I lived in Illinois and was the only one doing it in the central part of the state where i was from. I just kept them going every month I would start a new batch but I would get several grows out of each jar before they would need to be redone. Has anyone else ever did it this way? I also just used a butter knife i put in boiling water and no gloves i would stick it in jar and put a couple grains of rice with the white mycelium on it in the jar and that was my inoculation. I never took spore prints because i never knew how. I got a case of jars from my older brother who went to prison and i just kept them going. Never really knew what i was doing but i remember what he told me. They were vary good and big cubensis. Not sure of my spelling so sorry. We did not have the internet back then and i found vary little on the subject back in the day. I used to trade a 3 cent jar of mushrooms still growing in the jar for an ounce of mexican weed. We also ate them right out of the jar. Never knew i could dry them! Then when i moved to Texas in the early 80's i found them growing in pastures on cow shit and we ate them straight off the patty and never got sick. Well we would puke because we always ate way to much and i am talkin several ounces but they were wet not dried. We would keep them in the fridge for a couple of days then throw them out. The getting sick was mild and then the tripping would kick in big time. Please let me know if anyone else has did it this way. Thank you vary much. And much respect young man for all the hard work you have did for the cause. I doubt you will see this but i hope so

Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience. Yes. I've done this with small jars and a Ziploc bag over the jar, which is what I misted. I found I had faster pinning and better yields if I added a casing layer in the jar. It works, but I get much bigger yields if I mix with Coco Coir etc. Like in my Fast Track video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp_NmpKMaq6bf68 I'm always riding that fine razor's edge between Simplicity and Effectiveness. I do like the method you described though! And thank you for subscribing! 😎👍🏼🍄

This is GREAT advise. Ive been using Coir for all my grows and thos time i chose to spawn to bulk and put them straight into fruiting conditions. Its been 15 days and it started pinning yesterday 🤷‍♂️ seems to hold true this far. Im just gonna let it do its thing. Less work and like you day why complicate things. I feel every grower should know this and at least give it a try. You dont know until you know, but thank you for the reassurance!!! Happy growing!!

Would you consider PE and APE harder to grow varieties? I was gifted my 1st monotub that gave my buddy 4 flushes so he said he take this and see what happens well 1 month went by and it was stalled I let it dry out and soaked it flip it it a foil turkey pan and then back into a little bigger steel it’s tub and I put it In my 1 grow tent that was just harvested and cleaned and forgot about it for a week I open up tub and there were pins everywhere and this was in total darkness. I took out and put led on it and it gave me 3 more flushes but 7-8 shrooms each flush so after that i mixed up pieces of the cake in all my cannabis containers to add microbes and fungal dominant soil. I know have 4 tubs and I stuck with PE and APE but just inoculated a3 pound bag of popcorn with stargazer isolate and another with the Maz. I want them canopy’s I see on the ner

Mushroom growing has become really complicated and commercialized. They want you to buy a pressure cooker, laminar flow hood, specially designed grow tubs, pre sterilised substrates, casing layers and grains, special jars and bags, etc, etc. I fell for it and wasted a lot of money. Now I realise I can grow just with small, unmodified plastic tubs, coco coir, cheap brown rice, a stock pot, a few jars, and boiling water.

I like the way you explain things, makes a lot of sense. After starting with way to big tubs for a beginner, I've corrected my course and bought a bunch of small containers, 1l food containers and 6l shoeboxes. So I can try out things and experiment on smaller faster batches. I'm actually going to compare tomorrow side by side a setup similar to yours (straight to fruiting mini dub tub) against old school lid on lid off for fruiting, with B+, and see the difference. I'll then do the same for other strains, maz and malabar. Hopefully they'll provide a lot of fairies and elves! ;) Quick question: I see you've adopted a shotgun style approach on your top tub, does that make a big difference? I also see you haven't used CO2 exit holes on your bottom tub, is that because the space between the two tubs fulfils that role?
@KitchenMycology
@KitchenMycology 7 ай бұрын
I have been using them without CO2 Holes for a few years and just recently tested the CO2 Holes because a friend of mine told me he always uses them. I didn't see any difference so I keep it simple and don't use them. It could be that space between the tubs, but I don't use them with my bags either. Maybe spraying them twice a day releases all the CO2? Not sure. Let me know how your experiment turns out. Thanks for your feedback and comments! 🍄♥️

Hello Kitchen Mycology...quick question. Im about to go straight to fruiting conditions on my next run either today or tomorrow, I was wondering if i should put a casing layer/pesudo casing on top of the substrate after I mix it and put it in the tub? What would you do or prefer I should do? I appreciate your time and answer.
@KitchenMycology
@KitchenMycology 7 ай бұрын
I prefer adding a "pseudo casing layer" of the same Coco Coir I use to Spawn the Grain into. I've found that it protects the Mycelium developing in the bulk substrate against contamination and it helps better pinning and coverage when it fruits. I've done side by side tests with Coir Loving Mushrooms and found it the best alternative. I always do this, unless it's a strain that will not pin unless you fruit first, case later. But I hardly ever grow those.

Why do you suppose that dumping the rice from a completely sterile environment (UB bag) into open air and a completely unknown environment (ziplock) would cause you to have far less contamination issues? It makes zero sense. I'm not implying that it's not true, I'm just trying to understand why.
@KitchenMycology

It makes "zero sense" to you because you're going off too many false assumptions my friend... "Unknown Environment?" Ziplocs are Sealed and Sterile in the box... "Open Air?" - you saw me doing anything out in the open? The members of my Course are ALL growing successfully and loving the simplicity. You're judging something at a glance when you don't know any of the details... Just watching the free videos on my channel would show a lot more than going off of your assumptions from watching just one of my videos. But anyway... I'm not trying to convince you of anything. this is misleading, and building a papertiger strawman etc. the reason why people are doing 2 stages is NOT because it is necessary, that is that it would not be possible to do it monotub, straight, but simply due to optimization of yield, time, handling costs.
@KitchenMycology

Have you done a side by side test with one stage vs two stage, and casing layer vs no casing? I have. You say "it would not be possible in monotub" - I've been doing it (one stage) in monotubs for Years. So it seems to me that you're not talking out of experience here. Also, accusing me of misleading IS misleading. I'm not misleading, I'm talking from experience. Go on Reddit, or any other forum, and you'll find people arguing endlessly about this.
