@@AbdulgamidShruakinov according to Japan their main security threat is from the communist Chinese not Russia. Especially as the neo-colonialist communist Chinese are involved in the most rapid and massive military buildup in human history, especially in offensive war fighting capabilities and the open intent of the communist party to have the most powerful military in the world by 2049. China has repeatedly threatened to militarily attack or invade neighboring countries so it is a matter of vigilance for Japan to prepare their defenses as they see fit and communist Chinese have no right to complain when they are engaged in expansionism , militarily occupying and taking over neighboring countries' islands and sovereign territory while also lying about their so called "peaceful rise". Now that the Americans are supposedly in rapid decline Xi has openly commanded the PLA to be ready to win wars in any ocean or on any continent while the CPC have openly stated their intention for the PLA to be a global military with bases everywhere like the Americans have done.

SAN, new viewer here. You did a good job of overview, but the real value of the Type12 isn't the ability to hit mainland china, it's the 1,000km range which will allow it to strike PLAN ships anywhere in the periphery of Taiwan, even on the western and SW approach. Theoretically, in a wartime situation, if one japanese plane or ship is attacked while performing a freedom of navigation or recon mission during a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, the JSDF could then engage the entire Chinese navy on the far side of Taiwan. It adds a different dimension to the blowback a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would bring about.

Chinas Navy has 1/2 the tonnage that the US Navy has. Tonnage is a much better descriptor of the power of one’s Navy than just hull numbers. China has the largest navy by hull number but A LOT of those ‘ships’ are very small and can’t stray more than 40 miles from the coast. They are basically like Coast Guuard ships. The US Navy has by far the strongest most technologically advanced Navy the world has ever seen. It’s the best. period hands down full stop end of story period.

I love how you used the Kiril islands as the starting part of the Japanese territory! I'm sure they appreciated that! (The Russians, less so) A few years ago the Chinese started making in roads to the so-called "second island chain." After the Solomon islands and Vanuatu had changed diplomatic relations from Taipei to Beijing, both quickly had Chinese agreements to set up port facilities there, with a Solomon governor promising to let the PLAN lease an entire island. Australia gave Washington the heads up and they both quashed those plans, but that doesn't mean that Beijing isn't still trying to get forward bases behind the "first island chain." (Keep close watch of Kiribati, which recently allowed Chinese police to patrol).

The PLAN continues to develop its blue water capabilities by building more fast support ships to refuel their destroyers and carriers at sea. More importantly, China has accelerated its "grey zone" maritime operations (e.g. the harassment of Philippine resupply vessels in the area of the Second Thomas Shoal) in addition to fortifying its collection of sandbar outposts with radar installations, missile batteries and landing strips. Japanese response of deploying long-range ASMs to Okinanawa is a prudent strategy, as is its historic increase in annual defense spending to counter China's increasing militarization of the Indo-Pacific.

actually no. anti ship missiles do a sea skimming maneuver to avoid countermeasure missiles from a ship. They require a very different design to effectively target anything on land. Just remember, Okinawa is 723 km in the nearest direction from mainland China. But if you have to fire a missile off from that direct route, maybe 5 degrees North or 5 degrees South, you no longer can reach the mainland of China. That is significant as China did NOT station all of it's PLA Navies assets at harbor directly West of Okinawa. So, think of an arc, not a single, straight line vector and you will have a better understanding of the range. Here's another little thought. The missile is fired from a stationary base using a solid propellent type engine. Once that engine has expended it's fuel, it follows the ballistic trajectory of any "bullet" fired from a gun. With increased range, comes the need to increase the upward angle of launch to have the missile "fly" to it's ballistic terminus point. The farther out it has to go to reach a target, the higher up it has to be fired, up to about 45 degrees above the level horizon. Sure there is curvature of the Earth to calculate too, but we will use this simple model for now. So, a missile flying upward presents a 'radar visible" profile longer than a "cruise missile skimming the sea surface" does. So, China will not "see" the missile on long range radar based in the Mainland initially, but they can see it shortly after launch and track it and calculate it's ballistic trajectory. China can also track it using sea based radars like on Chinese warships too and these systems are probably networked to some degree and sharing "battlefield" 3D radar imaging. So, this system sounds great. But is it better than maybe a Ukrainian Neptune Cruise missile with a shorter range, but that actually flies (slower) but close to the water? Maybe the Japanese will layer their defensed to include naval cruise missiles too?
@capn82

So much wrong with this. The upgraded type 12 has a range between 250-400 km. The version still in development will have the 1000km range, and a far stealthier profile. It isn’t deployed yet.

It's the same Which came first? The Chicken or the Egg metaphor that Russia is also facing? One has to take into consideration why a country might "feel" threatened. Maybe fear is another form of insecurity that forces countries to send troops into Eastern Europe to create a "buffer" between itself and historically less than neutral other regional countries? What? How could Russia feel insecure? They have all that land and oil and gas? Well, history is a funny thing. Most of us hated History Class. But a lot of World Leaders studied History, and Geography and languages and really discovered the importance of knowing what were the contributing factors in WW2. It's funny, but Tsarist Russia and post Revolution Russia has had a rather troubled past. Russia has faced waves of invasion over the centuries from "horsemen" from the East and Northern Europeans from Scandinavia too? Seems that if you have land and crops and plenty of workers, your country looks inviting to other peoples and some are NOT vising on some Tourist Bucket List excursion, but intend to overstay their welcome by maybe a hundred or so years. Then there were the Napoleonic wars and NAZI Germany too. And of course Russia has had some interesting times with the older Government from Turkiye, something called the Ottoman Empire. So, it's important to understand why a country might feel threatened by all this military build-up along the First Island Chain from countries that have had a historical past with China that could be viewed as adversarial. What? America was China's Adversary? Well, we have to study History again, class. Seems that England and America had a thriving trade of Opium that they bought from Afghanistan in the seaport of Bombay, and sold it to Rich Chinese Nobles and their children. You can look up the Boxer Rebellion for some background. Or you can watch an old Steve McQueen (who?) movie Sand Pebbles, I believe it was called? If nothing else, you get to see the power and versatility of the BAR and the 30-06 cartridge. I knew that I would get you if I referenced the weaponry.

Again there is a price for that "Blue Water Navy" capability. Specifically it is: The Department of the Navy’s (DON) FY 2024 President’s Budget (PB24) request is $255.8B, an increase of $11.1B or 4.5% from the FY 2023 enacted budget. The question people are now asking is that the "right" mix of assets to buy with the Dollars that Congress may someday approve? Or, is it better to sell equipment and sell training to our allies in the region and have them protect their own and each other's strategic mutual interests? It maybe cheaper to have Less US Ships and to sell more to our "friends". But Friends have a funny way of become less friendly. How doe you fix that problem after you have sold them your better equipment and trained them on the way to use it? Then of course their technical people can reverse engineer our equipment (eventually) and see the flaws and maybe also build better and cheaper systems that compete with American Military and Defense technology.

You can bet on one thing, for sure. If China decides to send some people on an excursion to Taiwan in 2027 or so, then you can safely bet on the S&P 500 Index going into the Red for a while. How about a 50% retrenchment? 80%? 90%? Now a Savvy Business Tycoon or better a consortium of them, like some of those American Business men (Musk, Bezos, and Cook) might just want to talk to their Chinese Business counterparts about having some kind of limited War just to stir things up a bit. Not too serious of a war, but still pretty scary looking so the investing community panics and sells all their assets and Run to Gold stocks and Gold everything. Maybe these two groups, the Americans and the Chinese, decide to have a "little or not so little live fire test" of their respective Navies and Air Forces and Missile defense systems on a little beach in southern Taiwan in P' Ing Tung? Nothing too big. Maybe 50 ships and submarines and 40 thousand troops and a two or three thousand airborne troops to land at the airbase nearby, you know, just like Putin had done in Ukraine. Just enough to shake up the Markets nicely. So, some really smart and rich people could get together and preposition themselves to buy certain assets like Gold and Oil at some low prices and then also buy some Puts on the S&P 500 Index and well a whole lot of other things too like maybe Bitcoin when it was $20 thousand a coin. Problem is then keeping the lid on that kind of "exercise". It could be done and I am not the first to suggest it either. May I introduce the modern Cell Phone Public to an older book entitled Catch 22? There was some kind of mention of a Syndicate there too? So, maybe the game is rigged. Even the War Games? Just remember to keep your kids and your Yacht away from Southern Taiwan in 2027.

Why can’t the Chinese Navy sail where ever they want? They have submarines. Are you telling me their subs stay in the South China Sea? Oh it’s because they don’t have the proper ships to go that far. Our aircraft carriers are all nuclear powered and can literally go anywhere without having to refuel for at least 40 years. The new subs coming out to take the place of the Ohio Class the Columbia class won’t have to be refueled for the lifetime of the boat. 50 years.

@@giganigga9624 A coordinated fleet of drones will certainly do a lot of damage to any ship. The proof of this is why the russian black sea fleet is hiding in Sochi or where they are. The drones will sink ANY ship. The new types can carry a very large TNT weight. You better believe how powerful their are, especially working in teams. No navy in the world can defend successfully against a coordinated drone attack. Don’t take my word for it, but international maritime strategy experts.

Umm…SAN you kinda dropped the ball here in your reporting. As of now The PLAN is the 2nd Largest Navy in overall capability. The PLAN became a true “Blue Water Navy” sometime in the mid 2010s and have steadily building up that capability ever since. The PLAN have more high end(modern) destroyers, frigates, amphibious warships and underway replenishment ships Today than the ROYAL(UK) and MARINE NATIONALE(FRANCE) navies combined. The PLAN have been conducting anti privacy operations in the Gulf Of Aden and the surrounding seas for well over a decade now. To say that the PLAN doesn’t possess vessels or can’t sail far from its shores is completely way off the mark in 2024.
