Just did this on my Masi Nuova Strada after a careless driver took me out. Worked like a charm and didn’t even crack the paint on the frame. Looks as good as it did before. Took about 275lbs of humans bouncing on the Columbus SLX tubing to get it bent back into shape. Steel is REAL! Thanks for the video and Article link!!!

Thanks for this video RJ! Got an almost identical dent in an old Raleigh frame, but my puny 68kg/150lbs weight (plus about 5kg in a backpack) wasn't enough to bend it back. Any ideas?
@crypttonite Жыл бұрын
cool vid, have a bend in same spot. out of thin air the other side seat stay became too close to wheel to clear brake pad, weird. Alignment between chainstay was good near bb. Anywho did the 2x4 chair routine & got it p close, needed a fraction more & somehow it was then out of whack. Put too much weight on lever, body weight & bent non drive side very far created a crease & a ridge. Gently got back, it was all over the place, crank clearance. Now it’s straight. Hopefully bend doesn’t develop a crack. I suppose the other tubes prevented it from busting. Wondering how the seat stay became out of line? Twisting from seat too high maybe, torsion?

whats your opinion on using a straight edge along the upper seat stay to help with alignment? just bend the lower part till the straight edge touches both upper and lower seat stay.

Hello I have a question, if I have an old steel frame with headset 1 inch can I set up a 1 1/8 carbon fork?
Gonna have to try this on a bianchi campione bike frame I just got from eBay, seller didn't list that the frame had a bent seat stay 😑
@Boogie.VanMan Жыл бұрын
When using the frame tool to check the alignment, how do u know ur taking the initial check from the correct side?...as in, how do u know which side is the factory-straight side?...maybe they´re both out a bit...or something...noob question probly..!

I had a similar issue with my SUN Solo, but it had bent where the brake mount is, so I was able to lay the frame down and pull the seat stay at the wheel drop out.
@Albanez396 жыл бұрын
Even if the bent tube was repaired, the steel structure is weaker than it was. On my last bike, the seat stay started breaking, just a few centimetres over the brake mount. The bike held fine, it didn't seem to ride diagonally or anything, but with time, the chain stay on the same side started breaking. I decided it was time for a new bike, and thought about welding it, painting it, fixing it and selling it for cheap. I believe the seat stay started braking because of my chain lock. The locking mechanism of the chain would be hanging right on the breaking spot, and every time I hit some minor pothole, I'd listen to the chain slam on the seat stay. It seemed like minor contact, and it was...but after thousands of hits, the seat stay started cracking until I noticed it and started keeping my lock in my backpack... When I disassembled everything I was stunned. Both of the stays were broken almost completely, and just a thin section of the tube was holding the entire weight. I welded everything and bent them in place. They look pretty well now, but I haven't been able to find paint stripper anywhere in my country. I want to paint it like new, replace some components and sell it for about $200.

Hey, love the video. My rear triangle got bent on my steel frame a year back, I've bent it back twice, I feel comfortable riding it around town but do you think it's safe to load up for a bike tour? There are no cracks, just slight bends where the tubes meet...
@RJTheBikeGuy3 жыл бұрын
Probably be oaky, but makes me wonder why you had to bend it back twice. Maybe too lightweight of a frame, or some other issue.

Hi RJ, I've just been fitting V brakes to one of my bikes. All was going well until I found one of the brake arms had a very limited range of motion compared to the others. Could this be a sign that the frame is bent? Greetings from England.

Is it me or does the down tube have a slight buckle in it?
@RJTheBikeGuy8 жыл бұрын
It's an illusion. The is a small stop on the bottom of the tube for the clamp on shifters, and small scratches on the tube in that area also from the clamp on shifters.
@thedowntownbikeshop99108 жыл бұрын
Oh good. I had a frame come through and the illusion was the opposite. Paint looked great, no dimples or cracks. But upon looking at right angle you could see a slight buckle near the head tube.

Thanks for the very informative video. That was a minor bend, and a relatively easy repair, so please explain why you say that the same kind of repair could not be done on an aluminum frame. I've straightened much worst bends on aluminum with good results. Some would say that your example frame would have to be trashed if it had been aluminum. I disagree.
@RJTheBikeGuy8 жыл бұрын
Cold bending aluminum makes it weaker and prone to breaking. Not safe.

how heavy is the frame? And the total weight of the bike?
