I was very very impressed and happy to see Simon rescue the cygnets that were almost lost in the weir. I live in a part of Tasmania, Australia (best to leave exact location unnamed.) A few years ago a similar misadventure occurred to a pair of local black swans and their beautiful cygnets. The adult pair chose a small island on a lake in a river tributary to the main river system with a weir for the fast running water leaving the lake to go downstream. I and no doubt many others were devastated when the cygnets were not there one day. When asking the local authorities (Council) what had happened, unlike your UK Wildlife group who tried their hardest and succeeded to rescue all the cygnets involved, the local authority wrote it off seemingly, saying enigmatically 'There was a water event.' No honest and sad explanation of what really happened. Just a write off. I have not been able to visit this much acclaimed local beauty spot after that without deep sadness. And gradually stopped visiting. My husband was a wonderful Yorkshireman who I met in Sydney and I am happy that my ancestors from grandparents going back and husband were all from UK. Much more empathy for wildlife in my opinion.

@BothHands15 жыл бұрын
Vincent Jack I think the parents would take them, even if they aren't theirs. The babies feed themselves, and if a predator comes around, there are other babies around that reduce the chance of the swan's own offspring being predated. It's not as sentimental, but it's still to the evolutionary benefit of both the babies and the parents, so everyone's happy in the end :)

Thank you so much for your perseverance in finding that last cygnet. We are presently caring for a cob, pen and two cygnets that were hatched on a speck of land in a shipping lock. We have built them a floating island and we have taken advice on what to feed them by swan support. Its costing us a fortune but wow, its amazing to see them thriving. Yesterday one of the cygnets hissed at me and I was so excited, it was like my toddler taking his first step!!

OMG! You guys are AMAZING! Animal heroes. Do not deny it. It is truth. Thank God for sending you angels. All that time searching for the little guy. Fabulous save guys! I just loved how that last little one was like "finally!" and snuggles right into your chest. And then they come out and Daddy's doing a hissing bit....until lastly comes flying out and hides under him! Ha! Try to pretend you're not my parent! Just you try! 2 of the little buggers starting drifting away there. I was worried....but then Daddy? came along the side on escaping Cygnet patrol. I hope they keep them tight like that till they're grown. Boy you and swans! I miss going to feed ours and our ducks. My daughter had her wedding 20yrs ago at the pavilion. Guests could feed them after. Lovely. And that black one you have. Oh my! SO beautiful. First one I've ever seen. We had some horrible monsters here years ago who murdered a couple of our innocent beauties. IDK how they fare now. Not easy to get out and about with no car so we haven't been lately. Still save bread and cereal and things tho. We feed our possums and raccoons and foxes, skunks, and all the other creatures around here. (We even had black bears just a few miles away! They've been gone from here for a very very long time) We even have Canadian geese come in the spring and summer who take over the little shopping center parking lot. We go at night and give Daddy food to take to them. He is VERY good at his job!😈🐾 Thankyou for all your love and work. And thanks for sharing with us. It's the only way I will ever get to visit there. Sorry for the book.😚🌹🕊️🦔🦊🦉

I've heard it's difficult to do that with even Geese and Ducks. I've seen groups of two or more family's with very close in age chicks and some other mothers will attack and even kill chicks that aren't their own. It's very heart breaking. I believe the only real way to do it is before they even hatch or even very young and the mother actually doesn't see you put an extra chick in her nest. Though there are the nice cases where animals are kind and take in babies of other kinds.
