I got a very poor connection call from a father and son who were stranded in the snow in the Ochoco National Forest without enough supplies to make it through the night. After getting some rough directions on how to get through mountains to their location I loaded up the off road recovery Jeep and headed out. The night turned into a wild adventure involving stuck friends, the local sheriffs, the search and rescue team, and even a wife in a mini van who was determined to make sure her husband made it home for bed time.

This reminds me of a trip up Mt. Scott (Douglas County, Oregon) in the late 80's. My bf and I got stuck; had no option left except to walk. As we got around the corner below where we were stuck, we came across another stuck vehicle. As a group, we were able to get that vehicle out, and head down the hill. Before we got down out of the snow, picked up a couple more people who were also hopelessly stuck. Ended up driving back into Roseburg with like 6 other strangers in some random Blazer or something. Quiet ride back. Everyone was exhausted and cold, grateful for the ride out, but also feeling mighty stoooopid. Not much said. 🙂

@@billybrand I've seen a gen-2 Caravan/Voyager traverse ditches and 'staggering' (cleared then overgrown) land to collect someone who didn't manage to cross on foot. Dunno if that was AWD or FWD I saw, but the driver's daughter inherited the bold confidence to take their family's other passenger cars off road - - But with -notably- _infamously_ less success, even *after* switching to seasonal tires. It made me wonder if a minivan could be a good target for an off road/utility conversion.

Nobody pays attention to how many right or left turns or how many intersections. They SHOULD, but they don't. I worked for Weyerhaeuser Timber Company many years ago, and my boss really knew the road system. One night I was in a section that I had never been in, and it was foggy, and I was lost. I called my boss on the radio and told him I was lost. The FIRST thing out of his mouth was, "where are you at?" I replied, "Roy, if I knew where I was at, I would not be lost!" LOL I would just drive around and when I came to an intersection, I would describe it to Roy. Within 2 intersections he knew where I was at, and sent me to where I needed to be.

Most people turn around by going forward and multiple back and cut. Instead, pull to one side of the road, cut the wheels all the way and BACK UP. Your wheels cut a much tighter turn backing. Try this on a two lane road with shoulders. Backing allows you to make a complete 180 in one motion. No more cut and turn, cut and turn.

You provide a great service. Even the most competent of travelers are gunna need a little help sometimes. Getting stuck in the snow recently to go look at some property I was considering to purchase was fun and games at first. I dug out and got stuck 20 feet later. This happened several times and all so amusing until the sun started to set and the temperature dropped by 15⁰F almost instantly. All I had was a 2'x2' piece of sheet metal to dig with; thank the Lord I had it. I was in a valley and had to go forward. I walked and pa cked the snow all the way up the hill and finally got out. Once out I couldn't stop to inspect the property and had to come back a few days later with my son. We got stuck 6 or 7 times but had fun and got to walk the whole property. We bought the property for more fun like this ...lol

Most of the vehicles he pulls out shouldn’t even be in those conditions. And I’m not just some KZbin viewer, I’ve done that sort of thing for decades now. I’ve seen many things go sideways, and had many late nights getting out of the snow. One thing we take that I don’t see Casey with is a chainsaw or two, it’s not unusual to have a tree across the road. At least in my area. My truck has front and rear PTO winches, front and rear locking differentials, and 41” tires. It also has super low gears. Sometimes a super low gear is the only way you’re moving, depending on snow conditions.

People, always keep in mind tires burn for HOURS and give off a lot of heat! So many families have frozen to death needlessly because they didn't know this. Burn the spare first naturally, then you can warm hands while you get the next one off the vehicle. Sacrificing a tire or even all 5 and wheels is a heck of a lot better than dying or losing limbs to frost bite!

Compliments to the sheriff that easily maneuvered his way back and around to turn himself around on the trail. We live in Minnesota and that is something everyone that has grown up with rear wheel drive can maneuver. It's not an easy thing LOL once you drive forward and feel like you're not moving anymore you quickly stop then back up and try it again and eventually you pack a trail and can get out. I have packed a trail out to the fish House on the lake in the front wheel drive car going back and forth to pack the trail over and over again without getting stuck. Now I have a truck with 35 inch tires that won't get stuck with a snow plow on the front.

I thought that, too, at the closeup to the wheel.

Chains are for ice, the reason people get stuck in theses conditions is sinking into the snow too deep for their ground clearance. Chains don’t help with that.

Do you happen to have more than one Apple device and pairing an external mic via Bluetooth by any chance? Only reason I ask is because my Beats headphones seem to connect to what ever it wants in the cloud. Yesterday I answered my iPhone from my MacBook, through my Beats headphones. And if I’m filming on my iPad and a phone call comes in, forget it! I gotta shut everything down and start all over again. I certainly appreciate your efforts in the field and on here for us. And it’s never nonsense you spew, always appreciate your commentary. Thanks for all you do, “So Others May Live!”

Watching from Scotland and just down from main ski centre and highest A road in UK. We get snow each year and often close the snow gates to prevent folks driving over the pass when they shouldn’t. BUT each year we have folks still coming up the road in vehicles that shouldn’t be out in the snow PLUS just because you own a 4x4 truck doesn’t mean it’ll perform in the snow. If you don’t have winter tyres on it your gonna get stuck. There’s times I just lose it with people coming up to sightsee the snowy mountains and we are trying to clear the roads with our tractors - I usually have to pray for forgiveness afterwards for what I’ve just said to these people 😅.
