Both parts of last weeks opener were blocked for copyright a day after they were posted. Apologies about that. ☹ Unrelated link: drive.google.com/file/d/1QPqo3XdMLyrFofZSFL0EVCtKrIMRAiB-/view?usp=sharing

8:40 Interestingly, Captain Pike holds a role similar to General Crook in the story of the Ponca, Standing Bear. Crook told Standing Bear's story to Thomas Tibbles, editor of the Omaha Daily Herald and an advocate of Native American rights and who had an ego the size of Saturn. Attorneys J.L. Webster and A.J. Poppleton of the Union Pacific Railroad offered free legal service under the pressure of Crook for his efforts that led to the completion of their rail lines. The case was called United States ex rel. Standing Bear v. Crook because Crook held the Ponca tribe under the "color of law." In a sense, Crook, on the side of Standing Bear, brought the case forward: he turned them all in (including himself) to fight for the legal rights of the natives under his jurisdiction. Crook is a complicated man whose house remains as a historical library in Omaha Nebraska, U.S.

16:15 Maybe the rational is this: Pike tests the recruits for their ability to hold their ground, and in this episode, Uhura resisted as per her training. But as they gain working experience within a team, they discover that the circle holds their mission and each other higher than the letter of the code. However, the strict introduction to the system shows that the recruits are trustworthy and code driven.

It is weird in the Federation to remind someone they are under oath because the glowing disk is a lie detector. You'll remember that Kirk ordered Scotty to lie in order to prove that it was a lie detector. Weird thing number 2, to me, is that Starfleet' can grant asylum. Starfleet is a branch of the Federation military. Shouldn't asylum be granted by the Federation? But it was necessary to the plot I suppose.

9:16 Many within the US today want to abolish the precedent of Asylum granted by the Standing Bear case but do not understand the scope of human rights or why they should apply to all humans in and out of the US. All are created equal in that they all inherit rights that cannot be alienated. It is a system for all the people, not for a specific (arbitrary) group of people.
