Welcome back to STRANGE RESORT... the Stephen King podcast that lurks in the shadows of otherwise sunny vacation destinations...
Would you like to support the STEPHEN KING BOOK CLUB by becoming a member? (And get some perks?) Check it out here:
/ @stephenkingbookclub1054
Tonight, our pod-caster / ghost-hunter George Hatfield dives into Mike Hanlon's archival materials... only to find a lot of blank journals in which the writing has vanished... but is there a way to make those words return to the page? George will scour every supernatural corner of Derry to find out and uncover the sordid history of this bizarre town...
And he will also learn more about one of the most tragic events of Derry's history: the disastrous fire at a night club called THE BLACK SPOT back in 1930... And who knows... a certain CLOWN named Pennywise might drop in for a visit.
Oh, by the way, in case you were wondering... The events discussed in the pod-cast are based upon the imaginary works of Stephen King -- mainly his novel IT. So, fear not, constant reader, George Hatfield is exploring these fictional worlds so you don't have to... but the STEPHEN KING BOOK CLUB -- a fan-channel that celebrates the master of horror -- is always glad to have you along for the ride!
Thanks for watching!

I must say, Mr. Hatfield, that you are far more dedicated than I could be. I salute your continued perseverance in the face of such strange goings-on. And I wish you all the best should you continue your endeavors. But take care if you venture into the sewers below Derry. I'm told that the storm of '85 significantly altered the landscape, as it were. Though, even before then the Derry Public works apparently had their own difficulties. I seem to recall something about a significant amount of the blueprints for the sewer system just vanishing at some point . . .

Mike Hanlon's interlude chapters are like my favorite parts of the book and just Mike in General.
@thing_under_the_stairs
@thing_under_the_stairs 29 күн бұрын
They're my favourite parts too. That sinister piece by piece history of a town tainted by evil still give me the best kind of chills. And Mike, the outsider town historian with an eye for patterns and details, is one of the most engaging characters King's ever written. He feels like someone I'd love to talk with and listen to for weeks.
@Argos-xb8ek
@Argos-xb8ek 29 күн бұрын
@thing_under_the_stairs Right? It feels almost like a noir crime solving story in itself. But what really made me like it was how if felt that Mike was on a mostly one man campaign against something so sinister and literally an entity of evil that has ta8nted nearly everything in his vicinity and how he's being watched and taunted all the while slowly becoming so isolated with the rest of the community with It trying to drive him insane. With only a few other people in town having the slightest idea of what was going down, yet none of them could truly help Mike, and that struggle is what made his story so compelling
@thing_under_the_stairs
@thing_under_the_stairs 29 күн бұрын
@@Argos-xb8ek Oh, absolutely, and the diary style writing in those sections,with the comments on how Mike's health and personal life are being affected, with the constant debate about whether or not to call the others back, ties all the interludes together perfectly. That diary style is also very Lovecraftian, something that I don't doubt Mr. King did *very* deliberately! But yes, it's Mike's informed commentary and speculation on every event he writes about that makes them even more sinister than they already were, which is quite a feat. I'm thinking I might have to get out my copy of IT and just read the Interludes now...

The movies took away one of the most important parts of the books and kind of the miniseries. Every part of the Losers club had a skill or role. In the movies, they made Bev the damsel and really took away from Mike's purpose cause he is the historian. Andrés Muschietti made Mike a crazy, irresponsible, child of crackheads( that he tried to take back in one sentence at the end). And Mike provided the weapon( gun) instead of Bev's skill

Yeah, the way that they "coincidentally" took away the strengths of the characters who happened to be the girl and the black boy left me rolling my eyes and wondering how Hollywood could be so lazy in 2017. I always thought that Bev was the toughest one of the lot, and that they'd never have survived without Mike's brains and interest in local history and lore. Taking those away takes away so much of the story, and so much of what Mr. King was trying to say about people in the first place.

Hey George, I don't know if this is in your wheelhouse, but, if you feel up for a road trip after Derry, there's a kind of unusual American cryptid you might be interested in. A red & white 1958 Plymouth Fury (unusual in itself, as the Fury apparently never came in those colors). The thing is, it's kind of like the Derry Clown, where it turns up in the oddest places, usually in and around some tragedy. Among the sightings was that it was IN Derry, the night of the '85 storm.

One of the more amusing aspects of this series is George's nonplussed reactions to all the supernatural occurrences caused by (presumably) Pennywise Jr. I do hope he manages to survive it though. Hope the Strange Resort podcast won't need a new host by the time this is over. (I'm a little late, but the most striking visual I remember of George Hatfield is the dream Jack had of him at the Overlook. I wonder if that was ever addressed here at some point. Either way, it's funny how circumstances find him investigating a bathtub.

Again, I can't tell you enough how much fun I am having with this channel. So impressed with the detail. As a Maine boy, Stephen King was everything... Derry is his stand-in for Bangor, of course (nice shot of his house, by the way)... The Jade of the Orient being the Oriental Jade (which I've been to, but not for a long long time). Love how you are weaving so many things together so cleverly. And the voice performances are excellent. I couldn't speak for Mr. King--- I've only ever met him the one time I told you about--- but I would like to think he would get a kick out of this series. After all, he's always been encouraging with independent adaptations of his work, what with the dollar films for his short stories (which I think has discontinued now, but was active for years). It's amazing how much King has mattered to my life growing up here, from "Christine" being the first "grown up" book I ever read, to seeing him all the time in bookstores and finally actually speaking to him, to almost being an extra in the "Langoliers" TV movie (alas, I couldn't film on the day, but a friend of mine is in it), to getting into huge arguments with literary snobs in college who were always putting him down... yeah, King casts a pretty big shadow.
