Same here. Never saw a thing about the movie. Had no idea it existed. I'd seen mentions of "Strange World" online, I think, but I think I just assumed they were talking about "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds". The title alone wasn't a unique attention catcher. Then a couple days ago, I saw somenoe say "Disney's Strange World", and I thought it was a new attraction at Disneyland or something. It wasn't unti l literally just saw the thumbnail for this video that I realized it's an animated movie that was released. Had NO idea. Marketing for this movie failed big time.

There is a truth to that. More often than not, for some reason, Japan really knows how to market Disney movies on posters better than we see here. I remember how Wreck-It Ralph's one called "Sugar Rush" there did a better job at selling what the movie would actually be about along with regulating the cameo news to a small corner of the poster or even just something really wholesome like the "Turning Red" poster that has Mei and her friends, while she is a panda, sitting and enjoying a sunset or "Big Hero 6" with Hiro hugging Baymax or the lastly well known "Frozen" one where the teaser what some comedy routine that told people little while Japan got a trailer that showed off what the film actually was and got people hyped proper.....wow, I spent way too much time on this....I apologize. TL;DR Japan posters of Disney movies can be pretty awesome and tells more about the movies than most western ones do sometimes.

Apparently Glass Onion WILL be released again in theatres post-Christmas/new year, which is great because it was probably the most enjoyable cinema experience I’ve had all year, and with word of mouth I think it could have made 400 million+ worldwide with a normal theatrical release, maybe even half a billion. Remember that Knives Out made over 300 million.
@MysteryMii

To add on to Glass Onion potentially leaving a lot of money on the table, since we now have proof that a Netflix film can work theatrically in at least modest amount of theaters, this is likely going to open the floodgates for directors to start demanding Netflix to give their films a more proper theatrical release. I also wouldn’t be shocked if Knives Out 3 ends up going wider and longer in theaters, partly because Rian Johnson can potentially used the news about how much money Glass Onion potentially left on the table to pressure Netflix into doing so (especially if they want more Knives Out films because they have only greenlit one more so far and they don’t own the IP, so they could potentially risk Johnson taking the property elsewhere after the third film).

There's really just no excuse for the lack of distribution for some of these films anymore. Back when they actually had to produce and distribute film reels, it would be understandable that distributers wouldn't want to send films that might garner less interest to smaller markets. Now that everything is digital, there's practically zero cost in distribution. The only impact might be that your local multiplex might only have 734 screenings of Wakanda Forever a day, as opposed to the 740 they have now.

I feel like Lightyear and Strange World have the same qualities as Treasure Planet that made it flop so many years ago. Fableman's was open in my town but only at the bigger theaters which isn't uncommon so I'm surprised it didn't open in similar markets yet. As for Strange World, I saw enough ads to where I think all the people claiming it had no marketing are in their own Strange World lol. The ads were enough for me, it sold an old school adventure and that's all I thought you needed, guess not. It wasn't exactly a marketing blitz though, and adventure style Disney animated movies (Atlantis, Treasure Planet) historically don't take off, weird trend. Worth noting there's a few markets it won't open in, like France where it'll go straight to Disney+ apparently, doubt it'll play that big a part but worth noting.

We had already drafted our schedule for the week and, looking at our numbers and market, decided to skip on “Bones and All”, only to have UA contact us (as well as any theater playing Glass Onion) and threaten to pull us off their distribution list if we didn’t play Bones and All as well. I’m hoping 2023 will be a turnaround for Disney and Pixar. Not only with Iger back, but both films next year play to their wheelhouses. Elemental looks like the classic “What if (blank) had feelings” Pixar film that audiences respond well to, and Wish is a musical with a recent Oscar winner, Ariana DeBose, being the lead voice. They also need to stop putting them on Disney+ after only 30-45 days and make it clear to viewers there’ll be a bit of time between theaters and Disney+.

I LOVED Glass Onion! I’m so glad I got to see it in theaters.

My theater had a 7:00 Showtime and a 10:20 Showtime for Glass Onion. We showed up to get tickets and the 7:00 Showtime was sold out with a line of people still asking for tickets for it. We had to settle for the 10:20 showtime which was still fairly busy for what its worth. Had that film been in more theaters this would've been easily a 100-150 Million domestic movie, what a waste.

I haven’t seen a single trailer or poster for “Strange Worlds” at all. No one in my circle know this movie exists. Anecdotal evidence, yes, but marketing flopped long before the movie.

Dan, can you please confirm the box office results for Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume? I’ve been reading from a few sources that the movie has been doing very well in Japan, and it seems it should’ve been included in the international charts for the past three weeks.

I saw trailers for Strange World the last few times I went to a theater but I couldn't tell what it was about and it just didn't look interesting. So yeah, a lot of people didn't know it was out but people like me who did know probably weren't interested.

Would have done anything to watch Glass Onion but no theaters nearby had it -- really think they should have gone a lot bigger on that one

I will say, It's hard for ads to get to me. I pay for ads to not be apart of my streaming sites. But I was at my in-laws all weekend long, mostly watching kids channels because of my daughter, as well as the parade- and I never saw a single ad for this movie. I forgot it was coming out this weekend. At least with encanto I knew saw things all over the place for it!

glass onion is debuting number 1 this week with a wide release and the box office narrative completely changes but Strange World had to do better than that Disney turning their advertising back to the creators should immedialtelty fix the numbers from now on hopefully

The only time I ever saw a trailer/ad for Strange World was when I saw Wakanda Forever. And strangely enough I thought it was Paul Rudd in the movie and thought "Thats weird hes doing 2 similar movies about exploring different worlds back to back" and then got home and looked up the cast and realized it was Jake Gyllenhaal.

I think there’s a “reason” why a movie targeted at young children failed beside the lack advertising. Lightyear performance was also related to that same “reason with advertising. Right or wrong, I’m guessing that’s it. Just my opinion.
