I normally work on residential wiring, and also a former army mechanic, but I have never really gotten into relays and what’s the point of a relay? So for the real question, the relay has 4 connections: #87 on relay to compressor, #85 on relay to push button horn switch to ground., #30 vehicle fused circuit, #86 on relay to is to the “live positive “ point of original horn. I have a 2021 F-350 with upfitter switches in the cab, and I was planning on switching those on for a quick second to operate the air horn, but now after looking at wiring diagram....I’m not sure I get all of it. With the wire from #87 on the relay to the positive on the compressor is a no brainer. I think #30 goes to a permanent source of power, but I was planning on using my upfitter switch that is fused. Do I need to just run power straight from the battery to #30 with a fuse? What does the “live positive point of the original horn have to do with my new horn, if my positive power is coming from my upfitter switches? I have the 2 horns and the compressor mounted, with the positive and negative wires connected and run into the engine compartment by the upfitter fuse box.

My wife didn't feel safe with the little squeak horn that is in the car because trucks simply don't see her. Installation was a challenge in relation to location. I ended up taking the hood latch assembly off so I could install it in front of the radiator. Worked out great and they will definitely hear her coming!

I just bought the single horn and am going to install it but I'm wondering, could you still keep the stock horn wired up and just splice in the relay to activate the larger horn at the same time, of course while powering it directly to the battery? My goal is to cut out the OEM horns from blowing at all, and using original relay circuit to install Air Horn in place of OEM Horns. I want to blow the Air horns via existing stock steering wheel center button. My OEM Horns are only accessible by removing the Bumper. I do not want to do that. Assuming I can locate those wires (to the OEM Horns), and isolate them from the circuit, I understand I must use a rated Fuse for the Air Horn (due to greater current draw). Is it as easy as replacing that OEM Fuse with the larger rated one, or is there more to be concerned with here - like gauge of OEM wires being used for OEM Horns, now to carry the load for Air Horns?

I have a question. Is the original power wire for the original horn heavy enough gage to carry the current? You ran a new wire to the battery, why? Cant you just install the relay into the original wires to the horn is my real question?
@StrangeGarage5 жыл бұрын
Original horn only draws a few amps of power, so horn relay and fuse will not be able to run the compressor for the new horn, which draws 20-25 amps peak. That's why I installed another relay and an in-line fuse.
@brewingman565 жыл бұрын
@@StrangeGarage Thanks, yes, I understand the adding of the fuse and rely, but is the wiring heavy enough to handle the increase in amperage without installing new wiring.
@StrangeGarage5 жыл бұрын
@@brewingman56 The existing power cannot supply it. The remote relay circumvents that. If you can wire it without using the battery, be my guest. But all wires in that vehicle go through the fuse box (IE are already restricted in amperage). The battery is where you get unrestricted power, and the fuse you install regulates it.
