There's only one John C. Reilly. There's only one Robin Williams. Double threat actors like that are rare. Will is one of them too but I think he doesn't want to risk losing his "funny man" identity.

He doesn't want to destroy Harold Crick's life. He must die in order to save a child's life. The novel is all about an average person achieving everything he has wanted in life. Gaining everything he needs to be who he wants to be. And the he willingly gives it up, to save someone else. That isn't just a bestseller, it's a message to the entire populace that reads the book. It sends the message that you can rise above, and become something greater.

I think it shows the affinity between comedy and tragedy. So many comedy actors an comedians make really good drama actors. Richard Pryor, Billy Connolly and Charlie Chaplin come to mind. But there's a lot more. Maybe it's because true comedy needs pathos to work.

I think this is a great movie; notwithstanding, when watching this scene, I can't help but think of other so-called "great projects" for which so many have had to suffer & die -- needlessly in my opinion. It's interesting how human beings [particularly so-called intellectuals] often have the audacity to insist on a project or an idea, despite all the hurt it may cause another, simply because they consider it their grand idea/project/masterpiece. Those who have managed to escape communism, Nazism, and other "great projects" so-called intellectuals have come up with, will recognize the parallels with this scene [in which Dustin Hoffman is indifferent toward all concerns and feelings Will Ferrell's character has because the masterpiece/project/idea matters more to him than the rights of any individual].
@z-beeblebrox8 жыл бұрын
+Michael A And yet what about successful "great projects"? The ones that in hindsight, we celebrate and support? The United States was literally called a Grand Experiment. People died over it. The EU, the Pyramids, the Panama Canal, all great projects. The Sistine Chapel made Michelangelo blind. The moral of this film is that there is a tug of war between these things that has no easy answer. If it was easy, Dustin Hoffman's character would simply be the bad guy. But he's portrayed as sympathetic, because Will Farrell's character dying isn't necessarily bad. It *could* be bad, but as far as Hoffman can see from the evidence, it looks like it isn't.
@ZoroHayoung6 жыл бұрын
Michael 1 Man I think you did not get the point ... We all will definitely die can be tomorrow or tomorrow or tomorrow, but the death will come, this is natural, it's the only thing that turns life into something Be apreciate. Nowadays most of people think in a bad way of death, what does not have any sense to me is the natural course and ALWAYS have a good and bad side, depend just of the perspective. Finaly he decide to acept death (everybody should acept :/) instead of have a selfish attitude and this was what made the film excelent, was because of that specific decision that he was saved, otherways he would die that time. The intention is bring to the table this discuss about death and human insignificance, and actually the argument of the professor was very storng, so strong that convinced Harold... So if death it's unevitaly whats matter? The answer of the film is the "little things".
@slayerette86m5 жыл бұрын
Pedro Henrique But it’s a death that came at the hand of someone else. Harold wasn’t confident enough to make his own decision. It had to be made for him until someone stepped in and decided how immoral it was. Yes, we will die, but some of us die for needless reasons.

I love this story and the characters. Its thematic elements also align nicely with classic Greek mythologies and the essence of a tragedy. The Fates dictate our lives and yet we have free will. When we use that freedom to try to escape from our fate, it actually seals it further, like a fly trapped in a spider's web. The story of Oedipus is a classic example. Only when we accept our fate and face it with courage are we able to grow and change our fate.

If you didnt care it wouldnt matter. Why would anyone want to read about somthing they dont care about. If you care, then it must be good, or at least the story." With all due respect I think you have a simplistic analysis on the situation. Its not just about dying to become a "best seller." Its about inspiring the millions of people who are like Harold Crick living in a constant state of quiet desperation to finally break out and make their dreams a reality. Not to mention saving the life of a child. Would you rather die some typical death like a heart attack at your work desk or as a hero that inspires countless generations?
