"There's a reason you hide from them" I think means more or less that Vecna knows some part of Max might want to give up, not let her friends help her, succumb to her guilt and let Vecna kill her. The music (and her friends) opened the door for her, but they can't just drag her out. She has to make the choice herself to keep fighting and escape.

In psychology, negativity bias often pervades our thoughts, albeit evolved for survival purposes for distant ancestors. There is a selective advantage to remember vividly the threats lurking in particular areas of the forests, and not to venture or encounter them again for self-preservation. The incessant negative chatter replaying in our heads may reflect part of the truth. Victims of trauma or depression may be similarly overwhelmed with a cyclic cycle of darkness. Vecna seems to tap into said darkness in his victims, magnify the perceptions devoid of light, feeding off the manifestation of shame/guilt/trauma, what not.

I don't think anybody has "let" Vecna do so. Even when he capitalizes on vulnerability, he's an actual outside invading danger in the ST world. In this case, they can't drag her out physically or they would and dang if she's not going to get their help and also save herself, there's no moment of you "have to decide, Max," it's not like that. There's a lot of armchair psychology audiences projecting and writing this as a case study. It's not.

Sadie really gave 120% for this episode. She'd written letters to everyone and resigned herself to her fate. She was so ready for Vecna to take her. To listen to the dark thoughts in her mind. The lyrics of the song, "I'd make a deal with God, and get him to swap our places" and Max thinking about Billy seems to imply she wishes he could be alive right now. Even if it meant she wouldn't be. But when she thinks about things that make her happy, her friends, all the wonderful memories she has, she decides to run. She decides to live. Really glad Mike and Will have finally started to reconnect after the rough start this season. Too bad their moment was interrupted due to a home invasion.

"The house" we see during Max's trance is not "the house" in the Upside-down, but rather a mental construct from where Max backdoored into Vecna's mind during her trance.

Robert Englund's cameo was phenomenal. I didn't recognize him but as soon as seen his name in end titles, just jumped over and hit a google search to see what was his role. And yes, he nailed it as a Victor Creel. Fun part is that Duffers did not intend to bring him into the show, he just admissioned a tape just like anybody else. But since this season was intended from the beginning to have a heavy Nightmare on Elm Street vibe, it was an obvious and damn good decision.

vecna was preying on Max's survivor's guilt, which is irrational but powerful nonetheless. she already felt responsible for what happened, even though none of it was get fault, but vecna, feeding on people's trauma and pain, is just in her head going "you're right max, it is your fault, you ruined everything, you'll be better off dead" she didn't do anything wrong but trauma, depression and survivors guilt are extremely powerful demons, and when they're in your head it's extremely hard not to listen to them.

The best episode ever! I cried, I couldn't breathe during the Running up that hill scene! It's not the last season, season 5 will be the last one. I can't wait to see the rest of your reactions guys! This season is something else. I love Max so much, Sadie Sink just stole my heart! I don't remember feeling SO A LOT of emotions while watching an episode since game of thrones tbh! Absolute masterpiece! I'm still crying while watching other people reactions to Max scene :D amazing!

Madison almost pulling out her hair gave me real Ashley vibes lol. That ending scene was perfectly written and executed. Oh yeah and Max was closing herself off to everyone instead of talking about what was eating at her about Billy's death. It's like with Chrissy sort of, thematically she wasn't getting the correct type of help from her troubles, and turned to drugs instead - this gave Vecna sort of a pathway to attack her

@@ssotkow Steve kind of got Lucky the song was right there. Cassettes from the 80s had an A-side and a B-side. Like vinyl records. Yes, now Max should have a copy with the song repeated the whole runtime of the tape... There was a function on fancy Walkmans that was "Autoreverse" so you could listen to a cassettes both sides without opening the Walkman. Hi-tech then.

It is as simple as she can’t talk about it. She feels like because she got involved with Lucas and all his friends. She feels like due to her being friends and being so involved she believes she’s the reason billy died. Sorry if that makes no sense

Max was distancing herself because she was feeling guilty about Billy's death, she felt that she could have helped him but it happened soo fast, she couldn't have. But in her mind she felt she should have jumped to save him but because she didn't she felt that maybe she hated him enough to let him die. She was having survivor's guilt and thought maybe she deserved to die. Bordering suicidal thoughts. Vecna sensed her pain and used it to get a foothold into her mind.

This episode was very anxious. I thought that Max would gave died, and given that she is one of my favourite characteristics, I think that I would have been sad for the rest of the season. Fortunately she's still alive!😓🥰

So dissapointed that everyone talks or completly misses the most important part. "wHAT ARE YOU DOING IN HERE MAX!" The first Time the monster was actually surprised and worried maybe even scrared that max went somewhere she was not suppose to GO! Max made it into HIS mind aND IT freaked him out and he got scared!!! EDIT: Ok Nevermind One of you did realize it sort of , GOOD FINALLY SOME ONE!! Also you missed that max seperated from the friends at the beginning yes.. BUT in her counsler records, SHE was being attacked by him from the episode 1 !!! Nose bleeds, Nightmares of billy, Etc were the first stage of the demon coming to get you. The LAST stage is seeing things. SO YES VEKNA was the reason she left her friends.. There would be no need for an explanation this late in the game, I believe they wrapped it up

Reality is people will deal with these things for a long time because in the real world demons and ghosts don’t exist. So you can rationalise it. My girlfriend has violent dreams. Particularly if she watches horror. She can have violent dreams about me. She’s had dreams that I’ve abused her and stuff. But she doesn’t leave me because she knows it isn’t real and that I love her. You gotta think of it from a real world view and not a “I know about the upside down” view.

How did Sadie Sink not even get a nomination for this episode??? Not a single member of Stranger Things' large and talented cast has won an Emmy in four years, and if ever there was a season to show those guys some love, it was this one. I'd have bumped up Millie to Best Leading Actress to clear the way for Sadie in Best Supporting Actress, and let Joe Kerry (Steve), Matthew Modine (Brenner), and the actor who will be revealed in a few episodes as Vecna (yes, I'm trying to avoid spoilers at all costs) duke it out for Best Supporting Actor, with Robert England and Joseph Quinn (Eddie Munson) in the Guest Actor category.

Max feels guilty because she "did not do more" to save Billy from the mindflayer in the Mail. As is always the case with survivor's guilt, she is constantly thinking that she could have done more. And she has been so wrapped up in her own grief (at Billy's death) and guilt (for Billy's death) that she withdrew from the circle of friends, broke off her relationship with Lucas, and "let" El (her friend) get moved across the country. There are a lot of layers, however, none of it is anything that Max "did" (except for surviving).

Well up until Billy sacrificed himself all we see is him being a total dick to her all the time, so when he stood up to the flayer she purposely didn't jump in because she hated how he treated her and didn't want to help him. But then reflecting back on him willing yo sacrifice himself and probably understanding the reason he is a dick is because of his dad and so she feels guilty about it and also felt suicidal. All of this is usually stuff people don't open up to others about which is why vecna made the comment. It's also probably because she has been conditioned to "tough it out" and not show weakness like Billy. I'm sure we will get more info in the last two episodes but either way it was a great episode

I'm with you on the props for Steve's babysitting. Sadie Sink crushed everything this episode. One impression I get is that her friends haven't been very supportive - not because they don't care, but because they don't understand why she would grieve for Billy. I could see a lot of their idea of comfort being to tell her that she's better off without him - and you could make a case that they aren't wrong, but it's very much not what she needs. I think that's part of why she's hiding away.

Love this episode, even though it was extremely stress inducing. My emotion level turned up to 11, so much so that my roomie started knocking on my door asking if I was "OK". I assured her I was fine and why I was so vocal. She didn't realize that season 4 dropped and said she was going to start watching immediately. Fast Forward several hours later, I hear my roomie yelling from her room. I went out to the hall and waited a couple of minutes. When she came out of her room, she was shaken. All she said to me was, " At least Max is alive" with a half sobbing, half laughing voice.

For me Max stole the show this season. She was giving me Nancy Thompson (Final Girl from NOET) vibes and I’m here for it. As for the Creel family simply not leaving the house after the first signs of trouble….. you’ll find out later this season it’s more complicated than that. I also found it funny when Nancy and Robin went to the asylum dressed up like their names were Abigail and Daffodil 🤣🤣🤣 and Everything Argyle said when ordering pizza from his job.
