It was never that interesting in the earlier seasons (in my opinion) but the Russia scenes AND the upside down scenes are way better in this season. Hopper x Joyce x Murray are just golden characters. And this is obviously an unpopular opinion but the scenes with Robin, Nancy, Max, etc bored me. Especially the basketball ghosthunters...I don't know why..still love them all.

Nah, honestly I disagree. I was really disappointed how they revealed him pretty much right away and his design isn't really all that intimidating or interesting either. One of the things that made the mind flayer great in contrast is how they portrayed him. They never actually fully revealed throughout season 2 and just remained as this mysterious shadow figure. Only halfway through season 3 is when they actually revealed his physical form but even THEN we know it wasn't his TRUE form but rather just a puppet he controlled to gain access to our world. We never even got to hear him talk only at the very end of season 3. This way they kept an ever present mystique and intrigue around the character, even long after his introduction. Not to mention his fantastic design which managed to give off a truly alien and otherworldly vibe for the character. It felt like something straight out of HP Lovecraft's mind. While ecna on the other hand is very humanoid and basically just looks like a zombie which I just don't find very interesting. Though after knowing who he is I'm letting that one pass. Sorry for the long rambling btw, just really wanted to say what I thought.

@@the_seer_0421 I think it’s more because this villain revolved around characters interacting with him and vise versa. We needed to see who he was early cause his appearance was a very large part of the character. Kinda the same with the demagorgen, we saw him in the beginning of season one when the boys were playing D&D. Both Vecna and the demagorgen are D&D characters brought to life. It might also be because Vecna might not be the final boss. We still have two episodes and another season to go and we’ve learned that vecna is a “soldier” for the mind flayer, meaning there’s no point in milking his reveal when we’ll get into something bigger next season. That also might be the reason why the mind flayer’s true reveal hasn’t been brought to us yet, cause he’s the one we’re supposed to be waiting for, not vecna.

This season is great, but Vecna's design is just not scary or intimidating at all, he just looks too much as a guy in a costume tbh(and I know it kinda makes sense given his true origin, but cmon) add to that the super cheesy voice effect they put on his lines and Vecna just isn't scary. What he does is some good body horror and the way he uses his victims' trauma is a classic "boogeyman" move, but all the scares just lose intensity for me whenever Vecna himself shows up lmao

The changes in horror levels are really interesting to me. It starts with mostly mucusy scaley monsters like the demogorgon, and then season 3 the gore aspect is amped up a ton. Now they've gone into nightmare on elms street style horror. It's really cool to see how the show handles this, and I for one am all for it. It allows the show to be darker and more mature for a now grown up cast.

I was curious as to why the horror was cranked up in S4 so I looked it up. Apparently they wanted the kids to be in season 1 only and then make them into adults for season 2. They wanted it to be like Stephen King’s IT. Everyone loved the actors and story as children so the Duffer brothers decided to continue with the story and kid actors. Once the kids became teens the Duffer bros were finally able to crank up the horror to how they originally wanted it! :) They were inspired by Freddy Krueger & Resident evil for Vecna. Robert Englund was also Victor Creel!!

@@andyjebson4976 Season 3 was the worst. It was just a rehash of Season 2, but less effectively and disguised with a neon coat of paint. Possession of a douchebag is less gripping than possession of an innocent little boy. We spent an entire season following Joyce and Hopper figuring out what we already knew from the opening scene: the Russians opened the gate. The kids knew almost immediately that the Mindflayer was back, and the rest of the season was just them slowly going after it. There was no mystery. Even though the show gives the audience a head-start over the characters, they usually hold back crucial info to keep us guessing through the second half. But there was nothing to hold back in Season 3 because nearly all of it was done before and revealed in the opening episode. There was nothing really new or interesting happening, just the same plots we've seen before. Season 2 still had originality, mystery, and emotional investment. Season 3 was unoriginal and shallow.

I will give you that the mystery and the big evil of the mind flayer isn't as good as it was in season 2, but there's far more to the story than just the fight between good and evil. The characters have always been the thing that holds stranger things together, without it all you whould have is the mystery of the upside down which hasn't been interesting since season 1. The characterisation in season 3 is great (except from hopper who's character is ruined to fill an anoying 80s trope) compared to season 2 wich is the worst the characters have ever been, only there to push the uninteresting story to do with the upside down (a pale rehash of the far more enjoyable mystery of season 1).

For me s3 was kinda a break from what stranger things was it was fun but it was not much mystery and upside down didn’t play a big part but this season they brought back upside down and the mystery and answered a lot of questions felt like a mix of s2 and s1

I think they are equally good. Season 2 kicked off where season 1 ended and kept the mystery and the spookiness (is that word? Lol) going strongly, if not even stronger than in season 1. Not to mention the great introduction of the mind flayer. It's only real downside might've been the majority of 11's character arc and that one episode where she finds those other people with super powers. That just felt like unnecessary filler more than anything. Besides that I thought it was a good season.
