I was a U.S. Army helicopter pilot and part of my time spent in the Army was as an instructor pilot. I taught the 1st 50 hours of flight instruction., out of a 210 hr. course. Before our students moved onto the 2nd phase of instruction they had to learn and complete 3 solo autorotations (to touchdown). Scores of practice autorotations were done prior to that. When an autorotation is entered the pilot bottoms out the collective, applies pedal to keep to aircraft from yawing and turns into the wind, looking for a suitable landing area. The aircraft is put into an angle of descent that keeps the rotor RPM at an optimal speed. At NO time is the collective used to control the rotor speed during descent. Just before touchdown the aircraft is flared (to slow it down), leveled out, and then collective is applied to soften the landing.

Yes but different helos have different tolerances and some, depending on altitude the autorotation is preformd, can over speed their rotors before reaching flare altitude if the collective is bottomed out too long on a steep decent with a heavy load and fuel.

I assume you were stationed in Alabama where Destin and I live...must admit, I lived close to the base (Ft. Rucker) where Army Helicopter Pilots train and it's seriously void of nearly everything except humidity, mosquitos, snakes, and lots and lots of flat land...I did throw out the 1st pitch at an AU vs AL baseball game in 2010-2011 or so at the historic building and ballyard with the river behind it and a railroad going through the outfield (or did)...kinda cool...By the way, my Uncle was Adjunct General of MS Air National Guard for years and Commanded the Air Base on Meridian, MS...he's been retired probably 20 yrs now though...initials are M.S....may know him...great guy...my favorite uncle and aunt by the way...

Collective IS used to control RRPM during descent. Too low then lower collective to reduce pitch on the blades. RRPM too high, increase collective to increase pitch and therefore slow down the rotor disc.

We entered autorotation by bottoming the collective, and it stayed there until you flared out and then raised it to soften the landing. The proper glide path (and therefore the airspeed and rotor rpm) was achieved by raising or lowering the nose.

That's not wrong. 747 are often on large routes that go over oceans. Granted a failure of all engines is very unlikely... if it happens, the 747 has absolutely no chance of avoiding a fatal crash.

Depends on the loading of the aircraft as to how many can fail. Generally 1-2 things are not brilliant but manageable. More and its between a semi-sustained glide and a glider. Though it does have a reasonable glide ratio of 15:1 or so and losing an engine at 40,000feet would mean it could glide around 183km, more if it had one engine.

And for Robinson helicopters, the Hobbs Meter (which tracks flight time in tenths of an hour for those unfamiliar), only counts when the collective is lifted up. well, it glides according to these guys, if you put it in the correct mode. Don't panic and forget or you are toast. Most people who die in choppers collide either with other " planes" or obstacles. It is collisions that kill them. A few make mistakes in fancy maneuvers as they lose their lift. Got to be on top of a chopper. It is constant review of attitude, speed and altitude......

Osprey can sorta fly (or emergency land) on one engine, the rotors are connected by a shaft inside the wing. Two engine failure is pretty unlikely.

I work on MH60R's and autorotation is great in the event of an engine failure. But the engines (at least on h60's) are the most reliable aspect of the bird. The problem lies in that if there is ANY failure other than an engine(i.e. Gearboxes, driveshafts, Hydraulics, ect... the things that fail most often) autorotation is virtually useless and we are right back to the falling brick.

Sorry, but other then the main rotors falling off you are completely wrong. splitting the needles separates the rotor system thru the clutch from the engine, trans, tail rotor, hydraulics etc.

kevin vt Check your facts as I think you are a little misguided. First your statement in and of itself is contradictory. The only way you can autorotate a helo is if the main rotor and tail rotor are connected. If the tail rotor is EVER disconnected from the main rotor the helo will instantly start to spin out of control and crash. Which defeats the purpose of autorotation. Look up some vids of what happens to a helo when a drive shaft breaks. Also I don't know what you're talking about (never heard of "splitting the needles" I asked around and no one here had ever heard of that before either including my senior chief who has worked on these things for 24 years) but in an mh60 the ONLY clutch is the one that disengages the engines from the main rotor. The main rotor is part of the main gear box it so if the mgb or transmission as you call it fails the rotor will stop spinning or spin out of sync with the tail rotor and either way autorotation wont work.. The drive shafts are bolted directly to the MGB and TGB. which is bolted directly to the tail rotor. There are no clutches outside of the engine to MGB clutches. Ive written enough so far but you are wrong on pretty much everything you said.

1dgram Let me rephrase, I currently work on MH60s but they are relatively new to the navy. They were just introduced to squadrons in the last few years but before that I worked on SH60Bs. With a few exceptions SH60s are mechanically identical to the MH60. Which is where you will find most of the NTSB records. The one i personally have knowledge of is a/c 505 an SH60B from HSL-48(now HSM-48 since since they also transitioned to MH60R). In 2006 a/c 505 went down after a complete hydraulics failure. Honestly to my knowledge i dont think we have lost a Romeo a/c yet knock on wood. But the mh60s are virtually brand new with very few hours. Compare that to the SH60s that have thousands sometimes upwards of 10 thousand hours on them. So relatively speaking most of those components still have a lot of life left in them.

Started my son in rotary wing flying lessons when he was 14. He took me up in the R-44 and did an auto-rotate (it's part of their standard training). Prior to, he explained what he was doing and why. Been around some pretty wild aircraft (was in the 35th Wild Weasels), but I gotta say experiencing an auto-rotate was one of the biggest pucker factors I ever had.

Interesting fact: There's an aircraft called an AutoGyro or gyroplane. They're basically airplanes that don't get their lift from fixed wings, but by rotary wings on autorotation alone as part of their normal operation. They have a large swamp boat-like propeller on the back that keeps the aircraft moving forward. The blades are not attached to the engine and provide lift by autorotation alone.

Which raises the question.. was his helicopter pilot a noob? I was a wheeled vehicle mechanic in a US Army Chinook company and I knew what an autorotation is and at least the basics of it. & It was nowhere near my MOS to know that. Probably part of why every aviation warrant officer in the unit offered to sign the papers needed for me to go to WOCS for pilot.. even though those papers only need two warrant officer's signatures. But I didn't take them up on it. The dumb 💩 young idiots do 😣 just like in basic when my back was probably less than millimeters away from literally being broken I went with the super soldier approach instead of going to the medics.. driven in part by the early 2000s drill sergeant push against sick call rangers that would go to sick call for things as stupid as paper cuts, or things even stupider than that.

The difficulty adding to it: You cannot flare without a forward momentum, because the vertex ring state is the other hazard that you even be aware of, when still powered. Going down from a standstill in the air too quickly and all the power you have wont help you out of decending....so to get out of the state you need to get some momentum into a direction to ride out of it so to speak.

I was in a jetcopter when it had a total power failure over downtown Kansas City. The pilot did a wonderful job of putting it in auto rotation and actually landing it in a small private airfield. I actually really didn't know for sure what was happening. If I did I probably would have crapped my pants.

In my military career I was both an Army and an Air Force instructor pilot in the UH-1 Huey helicopter. Army pilots are trained to make autorotation landings that slide after touchdown (like Gerry did). The Air Force required touchdowns to have no slide because you are more likely to land on a soft surface - dirt, mud, water, treetops, etc - than you are a runway. This was done by just before landing pulling the nose up to reduce forward speed and to build rotor RPM, then transitioning to a hovering autorotation (just as if your engine failed in a hover). I always thought the Air Force way was a better idea.

I concur. I was taught to slide it on. But as civil pilot, I was later taught that the helicopter could do much better. So I practiced 0 airspeed landings. I flew both Hueys and Apache's in the Army and later received great training from Bell at their training academy.

+mrJv2k7 gyroscopters have engines just like an airplane, normally mounted backwards, with a propeller pushing forward. As the propeller push, the gyrocopter accelerates and the main rotor (which is tilted backwards) "catches" the air and start spinning, just like in autorotation. With enough speed, a slight change on the rotor blade pitch and the gyro takes off. Normally it doesn't take that much runway, im not a gyrocopter pilot, but I'd guess 200'/300' are more than enough.

That's the wreckage of an old Mitchell B-25 that crashed in the 1950's while on a training exercise. Official cause of the crash was icing but from the condition one of the propellers is in it seems like an engine failed before impact.

+WarriorX almost, it's why gyro's blades are angled back, but the airflow from the engine also contributes to them turning and they are at a fixed pitch so no cyclic to "flair" the blade angle for a vertical landing. Early helicopters where/are often mistaken for gyro's as the power came from a front mounted radial engine that retained a small prop to blow air over the air-cooled motor.

I was talking to my neighbor once and he told me he had been in four helicopter crashes. I was shocked. I knew he had been in the army during Vietnam, so I asked if it was during his time there. Turns out he spent the whole war in stationed in New York making films for the Army. The helicopter crashes happened afterwards, during his time as a cinematographer, working on movies.
