A great reaction to probably one of the most unknown singers around. Another song of hers that you should have a listen to is "Monster".

Yes, you really get spellbound (trøllabundin) by nature and her singing ☺️ First her singing is almost magical I think, then this raw, deep, human feeling. ”Prayerful with nature” - I like that.

Another respectful and erudite reaction Jeff. Eivor is yet another gem from the Viking lands. I watch this clip whenever I feel down and it makes my spirit soar every time. It has to be some of the most beautiful concert footage ever recorded. There is something very, very special in the clarity of these northern voices with Eivor, Aurora, Sissel, the late Marie Fredriksson from Roxette, Angelina Jordan, Bjork, Sigrid, Ane Brun, Agnetha and Anni-Frid from ABBA, Klara and Johanna from First Aid Kit (check these sisters out if you haven't already come across them, for the most superb sibling harmonies).

This is magic. it's deffo like being spelled by trolls (mythical creatures) To perform on a place like this is an "out of this world" experience. Eivør's doing Inuite women throat singing with her own twist. This is truly some of the sounds of the north. I've had the fortune to work with some of NRK's sound tech's, they are world class imo.

This isn't Inuit throat singing. This is traditional Norwegian singing and hand drum. These throat sounds are not exclusive to just one tribe or area around the world. There is more to Viking culture than just pillaging and murdering the English.

@@MommaARA eivor has stated that she studied with an Inuit singer, so that's probably what this comment is referring to. It is a combination of techniques from many different northern peoples, the Inuit and Viking both included :)

Listening to this song in this way makes me proud of my Scandinavian heritage. The music connects my soul to something old and true and real and deep all at the same time. Imagine hearing this as you came home through the Fjord. Either you'll cry or get stoic, but you will not leave unmoved.

One thing you probably missed in her technique is that she is doing a very old school Nordic thing of "singing" on the inhale. That is not something you hear in traditional Western singing. We are used to slight pauses where the singer can inhale so they don't pass out because they always exhale when they sing. Singing on exhale and inhale makes it feel otherworldly. She does a smidgen before but at roughly the 2/3 mark you can literally see it with your own eyes. You see her throat inhaling as she is shaping a vowel sound with her mouth and hear the result. Backwards singing. This is ancient stuff we lost. You can hear it some traditional Kulning (cow herding) calls / songs.

Yes to all comments below! I discovered Eivør when I started watching The Last Kingdom. There is a great talk between Eivør and John Lunn about the making of the music, on Eivør's own KZbin channel . There is indeed a prayer like quality to her singing, but I think that is true for all original sound-making around the world! For the last 50 years of my life I've been trying to discover the true nature of music, which I call sound-making, because it's so tied up with rituals required to get through life, surrounded only by nature, without the technology we're all accustomed to nowadays.

Hello there, my friend. Awesome that you reacted to this one :-) - Nice to see and hear something a little different from time to time, right ? I'm not sure if you have ever visited Norway, or if it's on your bucket list. But it SHOULD be. LOL Take it from me. We have a VERY beautiful country :-) Now, believe it or not, I have an absolute CAN'T MISS performance by Angelina Jordan. On Valentine's Day, she put out her cover (with a self edited video to go with it) of "My Funny Valentine", the 1937 jazz standard that has been included in more than 1200 albums through the years. She also did a cover of the song when she was 10 years old, but this time around she is 16 (as of Jan 10th). And MAN!!! that performance is beautiful. Actually, tbh, way beyond beautiful. I have yet to see anyone not totally taken aback by it, and I believe you will feel the same. I would have loved to give you the link to her IG account, but links like that tend to be removed by the KZbin robots. Instead I will give you a link to one of her biggest supporters, Boris Palenovski. Trust me on this one - You will not regret it. Here is the link : kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIjMfYKkfa-Mrsk Much love and respect from Norway :-)

Such a great reaction! And Eivør is indeed an amazingly diverse artist. It is such a pity that some of her most amazing works, such as music for several stage plays, where she, of course, herself sang, remained unreleased and almost unknown. I would suggest watching a video called "Eivør Palsdottir - Rura barnið (Vuggebarnet) (2011)", it's a true gem (and no one seems to have reacted to it yet). This is a traditional Faroese lullaby that she sings while she accompanies herself on the kalimba.

LOve your reaction Jeff. Eivør is a guest artist here with the Norse band called Vamp. They are celebrating their 30 years jubilee as a group, and are a national treasure. Their texts are in Norwegian and their sound is folky, there's some Irish folk inspiration, they have named it North Sea music. The drummer joining in is named Odin, as in the main Norse god, before Christianity. They let Eivor do some of her own work as part of the performance. The place is named Stigen (as in 'the ladder'), probably due to the steep terrain you must master to make your way up from the fjord. It's on the UNESCO's protection list for it's unique placement, style, history. Vamp's most known song is Tir n'a noir (a mythical Irish place), the text written by my history teacher at high school. Here it is from same concert: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2irgmSLYtp6l7c or in english translation by Emi Fujita kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6e6qKx7rNybjKs .

Her singing, drumming (pulse), techniques (incl. both on inhale/exhale!), the scenery, recording quality …. I just love everything about this💜☺️. And yes, the connection felt with nature …. I cherrish that💚🙏🏼. And yes, she is very experimental and curious (like Bowie😉)🌈☺️. What a timing, too, for this. Just planning a trip to Norway (family celebration) as well as bought tickets to an Eivør concert next month - so excited👍🏼😄😉. Love this song. I don't know if it's just me, but I hear a light similarity with North American native/indigenous music. Of course the war drum is common in many cultures traditional music. What I hear mainly is her vocal inflections and note "re-attacks" through her legato phrases. Melodically it's different, but I guess I can say there are similar "vocal effects" used. Also, the throat singing she is doing is an old traditional/folk Faroese technique(from what I've read).
