Okay, since you actually asked and seem genuinely interested, I'll tell you some things. What you were hearing here is Circumpolar Tradition shamanic song-magic. This is the art of blending the person with the landscape and the lives and the purpose. It does involve singing both exhaling and inhaling in a continuous "spell" unified with the land, and the result can be navigation, finding food or shelter, learning the nature of Nature in a place, or just glorifying in the pure sensation of being one with the world. This art goes back tens of thousands of years, to at least the Ice Age among the Faroese, Sami, Tungus, Chukchi, Inuit, Ojibwa, Sioux, and others. It is a form of enlightenment achieved solely by communion, without dependence on drugs, and so it must be extremely refined to have best effect. This art is from the original source of the very word "shaman," one who bridges among the worlds of possibilities and potentials for the sake of guiding, healing, and evolving the people in their sustainable relationship to Nature. This particular song is (like a lot of her works) laced with irony. It is a piece about being entranced by magic, while she actually entrances you with her magic of the world, as if to provide you the example. It's tasty fun! It's also a bit of the Trickster's art, which is one of those things you get with shamans. We often challenge you to see outside your own process, and simultaneously to see your process as perfectly natural for what you are. It's all about the perspective of your place and purpose. If you would like to explore this primordial essence more, you could look up a few of her other tracks. "Eivør - Salt (Lyric Video)" and "Eivør - Undo Your Mind (Official Video)" and "Eivør - Surrender (Official Video)" might do. Alternately, you may find a similar but different sense of ancient times brought forth from "Omnia (Official) Saltatio Vita" or "FAUN - Odin (feat. Einar Selvik / WARDRUNA & Matin Seeberg). Or if you are looking for that moment of peacefulness, try Maddji, Dawn Light. So, anyway, there's a bit of an answer, and a bit of a beginning. Forgot to mention, Tròdlabùndin was written by Eivør and is classified as Nordic folk. The words as sung are in Faroese. The Faroe islands, by the way, are a part of the Kingdom of Denmark and lie just about midway between Norway and Iceland. You should visit them someday, especially the views from around the tiny village of Gásadalur (ghos-uh-del-er); they'll take your breath away.

'Troll' isn't just a norse mythological being, the word ('Trøll' in Norwgian), is also synonymous with spellcasting in all the norse languages since that was an ability associated with trolls in ancient times. :) Tròdla or Trølla means 'to troll' or 'trolling' which roughly means 'to cast a spell' and 'Bound' is also derived from norse 'Bundin' so the translated title is 'Spellbound'. I think the current english use of 'trolling' is a pretty funny contrast to the nordic use of the expression as it's still what pretty much all practice of magic including simple magic tricks are called here. A magician is called 'Trollkarl' which means 'Troll-man' in Swedish and he's obviously trolling for a living. :)

Great reaction! I'm glad you all find this amazing. Eivør Pálsdóttir is from the Faroe Islands and so her name in Faroese phonetically is: Eivør (eye-ver) Pálsdóttir (puls-dah-ter). The song phonetically is: Tròdlabùndin (trudt-lah-bahn-ton) and essentially means "spellbound"

So it follows closely Icelandic pronunciation conventions, lo-kEh instead of low-key when pronouncing Loki’s name. But then again even in English, there are at least two ways to say “about”. So what do I know? The way you write it, the vowels seem to be replaced with schwa or near-schwa. I guess Faroese seems to be half-way house between modern Icelandic and general English in pronunciation conventions.

I love Eivor, I accidently discovered her on youtube some 9 years ago. I'm so glad she's getting to be more known. She's me favouritr female vocalist. She's the one who can do everything. She has classical vocal training so she can do Opera ( look for panis Angelicus Eivor), Her version of May it be by Enia ( song of Lotr). Another great version of the song you've just listened with more of that throat singing (she has several versions of her own songs, Undo your mind a song that coul be features in a James Bond movie, My mother with it's folky sound, Falling free is a great song. Her collaboration with Einar from Wardruna (in the same line as Hilung but with their own flavor). There's a lot to choose from and to drop your jaw in what concerns Eivor.

You should check out Wardrunawhere the vokalist Einar Selvikis the former drummer in the black metal band Gorgoroth. The son is called HELVEGEN and is a live preformanse whit another Norwegian singer called Aurora.Their music is based on norse runs and the band use tradisitonal viking instruments.

About 1hour north of where this is filmed there is an international music festival. Every year (well not this) last year we had mongolian throat singing on top of a mountain as one of the events. The year before we had native Americans here. But is often is more folk music there. A little but further inland there is a metal festival each year that your band would fit in very well.

Fun fact - some of the "beatboxing" sounds she's making are made on the in-breath instead of how you would normally vocalize (on the out-breath). Although rare, Scandinavian languages can sometimes use this technique when speaking, for example saying "jepp" (for yes), but making the sound while drawing in breath. English speakers tend to get startled by this. I have been asked "are you OK?" on more than one occasion doing this!

If not, you should check her out (She's from Norway) You can check out "Through the eyes of a child" live at Nidarostomen or her music video for "Runaway" There's lots of great choices, but I would love for you to check her out. She has many different sounds. Can't really put her in any box or genre. As for Eivor, she is fantastic.

Pronouncing is quite easy. Eivør, The letter "ø" is the same sound as the "i" in "Bird", the R is rolled Now coms the fun part , Pálsdóttir , "á" is a dubble a. the "ó" is a "oh" with the h beeing very low almost not there sound. Tròdlabùndin/Spellbound: The "ò" is a round "o" sound. and the "ù" is a deep u sound. Listen to how she sings it. The recording was made for the Norwegian state TV (NRK) and the event was in the western part of Norway a place called "Stigen gård"/Stigen Farm. County Aurland. One of the most scenic areas in west/central Norway. about a 5 hour drive from Oslo. Eivør Pálsdóttir btw is from the Feroeese. From the Faero islands, a group of small islands in the middle of the North atlantic , due west from Norway and due south from Iceland. Today a part of Denmark, but has close ties languagewise with Iceland and cultrural with Iceland, Denmark and Norway.
