As a landscaper of a few years now, I'd like to point out that it might be way easier to have one large motor spin two blades instead of all the smaller blades. This will disperse the grass farther out and will have a much higher speed at the cutting edge, meaning that it would cut more effectively even when dull. It would probably save battery power too. Hope you read this.

@@crazycarl864 Lobbies promote regulation to make sure they're the only players in town. The government will pass laws precisely to stop the "just hims" to make sure the corporations can make bank. Did you know that the 1968 gun control act was envisioned by Thomas J. Dodd, a Connecticut politician with ties to the Connecticut gun industry? Connecticut was home of Colt, Winchester, Savage, Stag Arms, Mossberg & Sons, Sturm Ruger, etc. and the gun industry was suffering from the competition of war-bringbacks and surplus. Millions of rifles already bought and paid for during wartime that were sold to importers for pennies on the dollar were much cheaper to sporterize than buy factory new. That's just an example that's fresh on my mind because I learned it in a podcast the other day, the point is that corporations write laws that they know they can follow but stifle competition.

I think lawn mowers are optimized for humans, so they are about the size a human can push while still being big so it's faster work. For something that's autonomous, the time won't matter as much so it can be smaller. Weed whackers work just fine and are smaller. I think the largest issue here was that there was nowhere for the cuttings to go - it needs to push them to the side or something.

This is an awesome project! One thing to keep in mind- if this were to go on tour autonomous vehicle and run every day, it wouldn’t be mowing down tall grass. The grass would only grow so little, those little blades would be great! Take for example all the autonomous lawn mowers coming to market. Their blades are super tiny, but that okay because they’re only cutting a few millimeters of grass a day.

One thing that holds this back is the blade geometry. Normal lawnmower blades have a angled part at the rear of the blade which causes the chopped grass pieces to fly up into the mower deck where they are bounced around until they make their way to the outsides of the mower and ejected. With completely flat blades, the mowed grass chunks fall back into the mower blades where they are rechopped and gum up the mower

Yes revisit this project please. Great idea. Whilst watching it seems the biggest problem is with grass cuttings building up around the cutters. I was wondering if something like a hoovering system could suck the cuttings away and blast them out evenly behind the machine? Once this machine has been perfected your next task will be to automate it. Then you can relax with your tea and a scone whilst watching the show.

Why not try to implement how actual mowers work where the blades are covered and the blades have a slight angle of attack so that it creates a gust of air pulling up from ground and causing the grass to to be pulled up perpendicular to the blades and the same air gust blows the grass out the side.

The problem with this idea is that while corn is planted in fairly symmetrical rows, and thus grows as such, grass doesn't grow in any semblance of order. The fingers on a corn header just help to direct the corn onto the cutters and keep it from folding away; meanwhile, on a self-propelled mower, there's a big wheel like on a wheat head.

The concept is sound. But take it from someone who has been in lawncare for 30+ years. This would be great for a maintained lawn but you're trying to use it as a brushcutter. A few design changes I would make are as follows: - Pitch the trailing edge of the blades to about 15 degrees. This will provide airflow to help lift un-cut blades of grass, and to blow away the cut ones. -Take a look at most lawn tractor mower-decks which use multi-blade setups. The front of the deck is flat, while the rear is curved to hug the blades. Additionally, notice how the front of the deck increases in height toward the discharge chute. as the first blade cuts grass in its path, it will throw the grass toward the discharge chute and over the second blade down the line. The second blade also cutting ad discharging grass over the third, and so on. with each pass toward the chute, more clippings are being transported, thus needing more room to transport them. Hence the raise in the top-front edge leading to the chute. The top-rear of the deck can remain flat. Basically, build a mower-deck using the design from a typical lawn tractor deck, while adapting it to use your 4-blade configuration. Side note, The swing-away blades are a nice touch though. You'll see those on brush-hogs to allow the blade to deflect off of a hard object rather than breaking or bending due to being rigid. Another idea, one that I have wanted to try for a while is a rear-discharge deck. That rise toward the cute would begin on each outer side of the front of the deck and peak in the middle.then carry rearward to a rear-facing opening. however, the leading area two sets of blades would each need to rotate toward the center so the clippings can all be transported toward the chute, and thrown rearward. However it would be good to add a wedge at the front to the deck, between the the two centermost sets of blades to prevent the right side from trying to throw it's clipping into the left side & vice-versa. Helps to think of mower decks as centrifugal fans. think of airflow or fluid dynamics, and where you want it to go. Hope all that made sense.

Heck, I'm in a power wheelchair and I'd totally use something like this to help elderly or other disabled people by mowing their lawns people's yards. You can have fun using an RC car AND be productive! I know they make grass cutting but those are at least $1000 and for small yards, it might be more beneficial to have a human that can navigate weird obstacles anyhow. You're channel is both entertaining but also very eye opening to what's possible

What about a mechanical push powered mower? The old school cylindrical ones with bent metal blades. Then you can eliminate 4 motors and save battery

Honestly, he should have just added remote control to a regular gas powered mower.

Spinning blades that can easily be touched while they spin. Yeah. That's horrifying. I wonder if a weed eater style cutter would work better. as I feel the lawn mower blades have mass and torque on their side.

Was it some 6S beast with carbon props? I never feel any danger from 1-3S motors with plastic props

@@georgewashington1621 believe me there is. I've had the fun of grabbing into a full speed 5inch prop that was only on 2s in a wing launch scenario. Those poly carbonate props go through skin like butter

@@georgewashington1621 No, it wasn't anything crazy like that. I want to say it had 3S motors but it was a while ago. I was writing a flight control firmware for it and I made a mistake in the code that made all the motors spin up to 100% and, like an idiot, I tried to grab it to disconnect the battery. Still have the scar to remember it by.

thats sad. when i was a kid i cut the front of a lawnmower off so the blades were exposed so i could cut down taller grass. also cut a hole in the top so i could feed in sticks to chop them like a woodchipper still have all 11 fingers

Exactly what I was thinking. If he would put a sicyle bar on the thing he'd drop the grass in long stalks. Question#2. Now what? Feed the fallen stalks into a chopper like a document shredder.

Interesting project! Seems like your proof of concept works quite well! I would think that your next major step would be to put larger diameter wheels on your 'car' and move the cutter to the center. Try using some spare TPU filament as like a 'weedeater line' type cutter, or even better yet pick up a weedeater head and some line. It will handle the rough scraggle much better than those spinning xacto blades of doom.
