Excerpt from a comment from the bassist on this page, re: live: "LOL! Sorry I'm so late to the party! HA! So yes, this was the Steve Allen Show which was filmed across the street from Capital Records in Hollywood. We definitely played live. They painstakingly hid the amps and chords for the most part. If you know they're there you can catch a glimpse of them or their shadows. I'm playing bass and I have an elephants memory...which is uncharacteristic if you were part of the 60's culture, There was an overhead stage mic. We thought the whole thing was pretty chintzy. It was done in one take. No overdubbing or anything of the sort, we were a pretty good band for being 18 year olds. We had also just finished touring with the Beach Boys and Buffalo Springfield which made us rise to new heights musically and vocally."

You can hear his drumsticks click after the keyboard solo so yes it's obviously live. I think it's a great live version, sound quality being what it was for television. Always loved the song! I do remember the 45 laying around at my house somewhere, courtesy of my older sister.

This is absolutely live. The video quality isn't great, but you can vaguely see guitar cables hanging. The tempo is slightly slower than the record, and the vocals as well as the organ solo are much different. Most variety shows of the era were mimed, but a few did have the budget for truly live performances, most notably Ed Sullivan and American Bandstand. The drums were most likely miked with a single overhead, maybe a snare mic but it's too hard to see. The guitar amps are off stage for aesthetic purposes and miked. Who wants to see amps when you have that groovy backdrop? The Strawberry Alarm Clock were thought to be a mysterious studio group until the mid eighties or so when the original members surfaced. It's nice to see that they could actually perform their music close to the recording, like the Electric Prunes, who were at one time also thought to be a studio group.
@60s70sVintageRock11 жыл бұрын
I'm not certain, but this clip might have been from the Mike Douglas show. That one also featured great 'live' performances. American Bandstand always used studio recordings, never live performances from guest artists... because the show was used to promote the latest single/45 releases. The teen dancers and audience would rate the records and if you could "dance to it". But there were other 'live' 60's music shows, including Hullabaloo and Shindig! :)

Could be pre-recorded, but just not the same recording that went on the album...the BBC was like that. You'd hear two guitars in bands with only one guitarist, for example. Back then the drums not being miked is not unusual (even for clubs, sometimes only the vocals went through a p.a. Hense the huge stacks of amplifiers in the late 60's that are unnecessary nowadays) but there were no wireless guitar/amp set-ups, which leads me to believe they pre-recorded it earlier before the shoot.
