“Freckled Angel” is a reference to REN’s friend Joe Hughs (forgive me if I got the spelling wrong). There’s a series of songs about Joe, the first of which is the title track “Freckled Angle”. The other songs are “Suicide” and “For Joe”. All worth checking out, but bring tissues. There is also a restaurant at Menai Bridge, UK, named Freckled Angel after Joe.

freckled angels album was named for Joe, who had a ton of freckles.. Joe took his own life when Ren was 19.. joe was one of his Best friends.. there is a single on this album named Freckled Angels and it was written right after he lost his friend.. there is a live version of that song that you should react to, but bring your tissues... It's very emotional, the live version was recorded only 8 months after he lost him.. it's a very young Ren... The other songs about Joe were, How to be me, Suicide, and For Joe...

the rhythm is "Ska" = on guitar a fast single strum off beat rhythm = but when slowed down into half of the off beats per bar then it´s called "Rock Steady" ....which are basically the "rhythm parents" of reggae = which is on guitar a double strum off beat rhythm = basically reggae has per bar the tempo/as many off beats as like "Rock Steady" but due to the played double strum per off beat as many strums as like as "Ska" per bar when played on guitar. Ska music is huge in the UK since the late 70ties and it also merged with Punk a lot since then. That Ren song - sounds - musically as like as many songs from the socalled "British Ska Explosion" of the late 70ties and early 80ties...from bands like "Madness", "The Beat" (in the US named = "The English Beat"), "The Specials", "Bad Manners", "The Selecter", "The Bodysnatchers".... to name just a few from a lot...their music has today "Cult Status" in the UK.

The Tony Hawks style music you say it sounds like is Ska - originating in Jamaica in the 50s and is the lineal father of reggae. The punk element to ska was added in the late 70s in the UK and the sound had a huge explosion in the USA in the mid 90s with bands like Sublime, No Doubt, Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake. The bands on THPS that did ska songs are Su!cide Machines and Goldfinger
