Super cool man! In keeping with the theme of throwing out names, the “brass knuckle” cause it’s gonna knock out all the fish 😃

Definitely fun to watch. I think you should come come up with a “knuckle natural” with all natural materials and deer belly head. I know there’s a ton of deer hair headed flies and the fettuccini foam is the signature of the fly. Food for thought.

Polar chenille is amazing, I love it, though I usually use it on jigs. This series is an interesting concept, especially from the eyes of someone who only recently got into tying. I fish for steelhead mostly, but I used a spinning rod or centerpin. Before I stopped fishing for them for ten years I used a fly rod but of course didn't tie. I was probably 16 or 17. I remember one day when I was probably 12 seeing someone killing it when nobody else could get a bite. I asked what he was using and to my surprise it was a hares ear when he was using a spinning setup so I've been interested in learning how to present flies the same way as on a fly rod but on the centerpin or spinning.

I tie a very similar fly to fish for snakeheads here in MD. I tie it weightless on an ahrex GB swimbait hook. The knucklehead floats the fly very well and makes a crazy cool waking action. Drives them nuts!

Imagining this fly swimming, and being my age I'm thinking the Knuckle Groovy. Far out man! Your consideration of material for it's purpose separates the master level from a guy like me. Great series Brian.

Fun series so far. Not sure anyone mentioned it but I'd go with "Knuckle Sandwich"...assuming the end result is going to look like a tasty meal for some predators!

It's starting to take shape, Brian. I dig the variety of materials and it's interesting to have a look behind the curtain into the thought process. I just had an epiphany with the name. How about the Knuckle Bump or Knuckle Bumper? Knuckle Series fly + tied with a Belly Bumper hook...🤔

Love this series so far Brian. I gotta say, you're artistry isn't that bad dude- your sketches are FINE. It does not take away from understanding what you are thinking about, and how you distinguish between materials. Love the fact that you actually traced the hook- that's a great tip. Question about this episode in particular- and I guess from the part 1 too- how much did knowing you were going to send this pattern into MFC for consideration influence your choices? You know more than me what it takes to "publish" (that's not the word, but you know what I mean) a pattern, and what they prefer as far as materials go, and as far as their processing allows. I haven't watched episode 4 yet (or if there's more) because with that above in mind, I imagine even if you prefer the shank version, that they won't necessarily use the shank method because of cost? Complete guess on my end. Really enjoyed you sharing this process. It's definitely something I aspire to do at some point - to have a pattern accepted into a fly catalog. I'm an overthinker, and the last time I had a pattern that I developed and was getting ready to send it in, I really over thought the production process, and pretty much ran into paralysis by analysis and put it away. Decision fatigue is real. Prime Fly Co

Something to maybe consider as well Brian is put the bucktail on first then the scale and tail to add a darker back part of the fly. Like I said I got ideas bouncing around in my head and I’m currently working on a pattern myself. Kinda scratching the one idea I had but I have another one bouncing around in my head that may give me the results I’m looking for in terms of movement but also water pushing ability

For your wing, check out Nayat. We talked recently about my experience with the PR 378. Something I do when I tie on them with synthetics is check that my materials aren't doing TOO good of a job of protecting the hook point. I've found that synthetics like craft fur & flashes (if there is too much) can sometimes block the hook point from cutting through the material when wet. To test this, I'll tie the fly. Then I grab the ends of the tailing fiber & wing with one hand, and the hook eye with the other. If I can punch that hook point through the materials with ease, then I know I'm good. If it has any resistance I'll keep and eye on it and do further testing, which is getting it wet and doing the same thing. Typically, I have way less issues with natural fibers, but the correct proportions of synthetics will work too, if dialed properly. I wonder if this experience will transfer to your hook profile & hope that it will be helpful. Keep the killer videos coming!

I LOVE Nayat. One thing I have to keep an eye on as a designer that might end up being taken on by a manufacturer is the availability of materials. Nayat is definitely available in small quantities, but when you are looking at tying enough flies that pounds of Nayat would need to be ordered over mulitple colors---things get weird. But I REALLY like Nayat....
