Use the Ahrex hook, it won’t bend, I promise. Use a 15 or 20mm shank. That’s been done and tested by Gunnar. Works like a charm. I’ve tied à LOT of flies on the GB swimbait hook. It is a great hook. And with a shank you’ll compensate for the heavy keel that comes from the huge keeling weight from the back portion of the hook. Great idea Brian!😊

Really enjoy this! I sit down to tie a bass fly and sometimes have NO idea where it’s going to go. I usually try to plan if it’s a Shad or Bluegill type color for the place I’ll fish, and then go for size of fly compared to size of bass I’m targeting. My most satisfying has been when I see a big bass chasing bait..go home tie something similar and return and catch a nice one 🙂 Mission accomplished! Mine aren’t complicated, but want it “swimmy” as you say..and somewhat realistic outline or shape. Sorry so long. REALLY appreciate your work and instructions & information Brian! Looking forward to more! 👍👍👌🎣

I'm really excited to see where you take this! I've been working with the PR378's for a few years now and may be able to share a little insight. While a little bit thinner than most like, the PR378 has never failed me yet, nor have I ever had to re bend one. That being said, I totally see your hesitancy. The 378 was designed with the idea of using mono straights to balance the fly over the hook. Let's say you tie a deceiver on one at normal proportions but only use the hook space that is provided. What will happen a lot of times is the fly will ride horizontally, but nose up. You want it horizontal & straight. The mono straight will provide more bulk through the hook profile that will bring the weight of the front portion down, (especially with a foam head) and will give you a better overall swim. In addition to all of that, the mono will make the fly quite a bit more weedless. Especially if you start building out slider rigs on them. Also, while it sounds counter productive considering your head material, adding a little bit of weight through the tying platform may help the the nose up problem too. If you end up having it.. Then we get to the middle & back portions. The 378 has a flat bottom that is great for adding rattles & weight. Just like the MFC hook, it's easy to add weight, but not a rattle. Also, while I think it will PROBABLY be ok, the hook gap on the MFC is wayyyyy smaller. Too much of "the right amount of bulk" will make hookups harder to get. I do think it will be pretty weedless for that reason though! You may end up having to downsize proportions of materials by more than normal for a more true "swim". The flies that I see Kelly tie with the MFC are fairly sparse, with very flowy materials like marabou that won't mess with keeling too much. Start adding boisterous materials like foam & bucktail and I fear that you may have some issues. Besides that, I think it's a killer hook, and I like the horizontal eye quite a lot. Looking forward to the journey Brian!
@flyfishingtheozarks

Thanks for the insight! I totally agree, part of my hesitancy with the 378 is I have always felt like it is so over-sized per hook size that I have trouble with proportions.......which is why the mono-extended bodies work SO well on them---it all makes sense now!

Hi Brian, I’m an old steelheader that has transplanted to Arkansas. I do a lot of trout spey with streamers, and a lot on my patterns are derived from steelhead flies. I tie a version of a Hoh Bo Spey (on a shank) for trout, more natural colors and more of a baitfish profile than the leach profile of the Hoh Bo. The way I get the baitfish shape is to create a shoulder, or prop toward the front of the fly. I do this is by twisting some predator wrap with some schlappen and wrap 3 to five times. Then the maribou goes on the front of the fly and it drapes over the shoulder. The predator wrap also provides some nice translucence in the under body. The fly swims great and I do very well with it here in Arkansas. Hope this is helpful

Brian, this will be a journey, and it's right on time, at least the beginning. I'm going to Lake Okeechobee for the month of February and I have an idea for a fly I want to tie to imitate a golden shiner. We'll see how it turns out but you just made me think I might need to change my hook because of all of the weeds in the lake. We'll see. Keep the good stuff coming.

Gunner Brammer has some good videos where he walks through some elements of how he designs and builds his pike and musky flies. I really like those videos, but don't tie or fish much for pike or musky. This series is going to be awesome becase I feel like this would be something I would tie and actually fish quite a bit. Anyway, he has some videos on how he extends the bodies on his flies with shanks and mono straights that might be helpful. Looking forward to the rest of the series 👍👍.
@martinrosenmill3390
@martinrosenmill3390 5 ай бұрын
My friend, the concept Gunnar demonstrates you can apply to any fly. It’s universal. Just because he is tying a muskyfly doesn’t mean you have to. Just use the info and apply to your needs. Tight lines😊

I have definitely seen Gunnar's Mono Straights....what I am wanting to do is have a shank that isn't rigid (the mono straights just extend the portion of the hook that help build the fly.) I want the shank for extra movement of the materials attached to the shank---almost like a tiny articulation.

Designing a fly is a whole different headache to do. Sone of my own patterns came from fishing other patterns and borrowing ideas from those patterns and mixing them together. Usually I have something in my mind that I want it to look like this or do that motion. Takes usually a few dozen attempts before I get it right except for my cracked craw jig. It was a one and don’t and this sucker is deadly and very simple to tie

Designing flies is truly an art form & many times very, very challenging. As far as weight goes, why not add a nice sized metal bead lashed in the middle (keel )area of the bottom portion of the hook you picked out to use ? I've used this method for many of my flies. The materials tied in & around the bead cover it up & the fly drops slowly in the water column. A small conehead might work, if more weight is desired. A regular conehead fly for me is like fly fishing with a Bass jig. No fish species I know, drops vertically in the water column like a jig does. Right, or wrong ? I'm really looking forward to see this development process. David Fisher-of-Men Fly Tying Ada, MI

Heck yeah Brian I am excited about this series for sure. I myself enjoy coming up with something new or my own tweaks to an established pattern. Gunnar Brammer has done some fly design series with sketches breaking down each step, but that’s on something that he has already designed. Even using the Infinite ♾️ Fly principle from Bob Popovich. But like you said I don’t believe that I have seen a series where someone starts from scratch with an idea and goes all the way through till they have it adopted by MFC. So I look forward to watching the next episode and the rest of this series.

If I may add my 2¢… don’t do a shank.. try piece of stuff mono, a single piece, or twist it and that will create a loop that you can slip the hook point through and then the “tail” of the fly will be beyond the hook gap/point and be flexible enough not to cause issues when it comes to hook setting.. Will help with keeping it from fouling. Putting your hard mono in hot/warm water will help getting it into shape and will keep it in the shape you will need #hawghunterflies
@flyfishingtheozarks
@flyfishingtheozarks 5 ай бұрын
I'm not really worries about the length of the fly or carrying weight very far back at all, the only reason I am thinking about a shank is for extra movement......I'm not even opposedtrying a shank in front of the hook.
