Ok from now on they’re the breathing stoma demon and it’s the best and silliest boss to have ever existed, I love it. Literally appeared on the serpent after his surgery, but they actually became buddies and like to hang out. Like a demon on your shoulder/breathing canal type deal. And the magma was just so they could light gigantic cigars (rolled by all the little arms they summoned from hell)

Ok, here's the secret to defeating Rykard. Armor-up, grab the weapon, run straight to the body and stabstabstab. I found this out of frustration when I decided to do one more go after 10 deaths. (Thought I had to level-up more and was going to leave.) The lava does not damage you like you think it would. So, you avoid ALL of the special attacks and heal when needed.

Tips: Upgrade the Spear at a blacksmith, otherwise of course it will be an hard boss fight. The Spear has extra-long range when fighting Rykard, which is why it is the only weapon suitable to slaying him (you don't stand in the lava-pool emanating from his body). Use a shield to tank his physical attacks, then stab him, you don't need to close up, and it leaves more observation time to watch Rykard's action scene instead of running around like an acephalic chicken. Soome lore...: Rykard isn't really a centipede... he seems to have been based on the Height Thunder Gods covering the sublimized-corpse (she was buried on a mountain far away from Izanagi's entrance point to Yomi-no-kuni, so it wasn't the same body) of Izanami no Mikoto in the land of Yomi, when Izanagi no Mikoto went to retrieve her similarly to Orpheus and Eurydice. This myth is based, in great part, on the volcanic erruption of Fuji-zan during the Jômon age, which destroyed the primitive civilization nearby the sacred mountain; during volcanic erruptions, storm clouds form, so the lightnings are often assimilated to dragons / serpents in japanese and chinese folklore, this event more precisely inspired the myth of Izanami's death while giving birth to the fire god (who was strangely worshipped by firefighters during the Edo period) and its beheading (Fuji is an explosion type volcano) by Izanagi no Mikoto. Dragons / Serpents are related to rivers also (hence why they are sometimes used for Horimono, especially by the Gassan smiths); while centipedes symbolize golden lodes in japanese folklore (due to their respective shapes); so in some legendary stories, giant centipedes wage war against japanese dragons (rivers carry Satetsu - iron sand, which was used instead of mining) who typically call a master archer for help (like the tale of Tawara Tôta, or the tale of Fujiwara Hidesato). They would have used a bow if it was a centipede; on the other hand, their is such a thing as "serpent slaying spear" in Edo period folklore, a spear was used to stab a great snake through the tongue while on the holy ground of Niko Tôshô-gû, because it was barring the procession of a Tokugawa Daimyô, but since it was an omen beast, shedding its blood on the consecrated ground would have been blasphemous (like Rykard), so a samurai used his Yari spear instead to stab the serpent's tongue and forcefully coil the reptile before evacuating it. In addition, Izanagi no Mikoto had several swords, or a single sword with many names, one of them was Ama no Ô Habari, which emphases the length of the blade (like the sword of High-King Gil Galad, in Tolkien's song), he also had a Spear, Ama no Nuhoko, which was used for the purpose of creating the archipelago (the continental plate that birth to Japan in geology was thus named "Izanagi Tectonic Plate"). Like the Storm Ruler of Dark Souls III, it has a design somewhat reminiscent of primitive japanese (Jokotô) swords (tsurugi) and spears (hoko).

yea.. the first time i play this i thought the same way, oh, maybe the serpent ate rykard so we gotta save him. until phase 2, oh so he chose to be eaten, this is a soul game, we're not helping anyone and come out a happy ending. besides.. all those corpses and ruins just outside their manor, of course this is a work of a madman. what am i thinking. and then i went back to the manor, everyone know we killed the snake. makes me wonder for a moment there, they're not even mad. but then i thought, yea... we killed their lord, of course we can kill them easily, no point getting mad. these group of people maybe bad in their ways, but they still respect your strength.
