In a game where we all suspected Joel could be killed, and indeed it happened, it would have been a nice change of perspective to be placed into Tommy's shoes. We could have seen further flashbacks of Joel's life from Tommy (before and after the outbreak in those twenty years before Ellie came into his life) to further memorialize Joel in the way that Ellie's flashbacks would do. It would have been a proper send off to Joel, rounding off what he represented to the two people who loved him most.

The new writer likely just went along with whatever their boss (Neil) said.

Ellie's biggest fear was ending up alone, as she told Sam, Henry's brother. “People have either died or left me, everyone except for you. Don’t tell me I’d be better off alone, because the truth is I’d just be more scared”. Sam, a side character, had an impactful departure. So did Tess. It resulted in growth in Joel and Ellie. Meanwhile what about Jesse? He died and so what? Nothing fucking happens. Jesse and Tommy are, as far as you know, dead, before you play as Abby for ten hours. They turn Ellie into the bad guy. This story just makes no sense to me, Joel doesn't feel like Joel, his mind and decisions feel wishy-washy, and not clear cut like he was in the first game. Both he and Tommy walking into a house with ten other people? Joel didn't torture Abby's dad. Yes. He killed him. Shot him and so many Fireflies. But when he said to Marlene, "There has to be another way, a better way," they fucking put him on his knees and threatened to execute him. No, he wouldn't get to see her one last time, or just wake Ellie up and ask her if she was okay with it. They ran their tests and were going to take a child's life without asking. How is that morally justified? For the sake of a cure I get it, but to delay the procedure by a day to wake a girl up and ask her, and give her time with her surrogate father isn't a big deal. So fast forward, Abby gets her revenge. Joel and Tommy save her fucking life more than once in that scene. So she tortures Joel. She drags it out and then executes him IN FRONT OF ELLIE. Joel didn't know the doctor had a daughter, I'm sure he would have treated it differently, but so what? Look what Anderson was willing to do to Ellie. When Marlene says she is going to tell Joel, he asks why he needs to know? Don't wake Ellie up. Don't tell anyone. Let's just kill her for our cure. They made this game to tell what story? There are no redeeming qualities or special moments, it is very depressing. Yes, it's realistic. I totally get it. Ellie growing up, out of her innocent 14-year-old shell, into adulthood. I relate to it so much. Questioning of purpose, learning that people who make decisions are not so good and evil, they have motivations for their actions. As justified as she is, arguably. But if you wanted to tell that story, it should have been done in a different way. Not like this. Ellie is alone now. She lost this game. She lost this entire game. Joel, Jesse, Tommy is angry with her, Dina, JJ, probably Jackson I doubt she'll go back, everyone and everything. Fingers. Guitar. Abby even beat the shit out of Ellie, and it's the player's job to get it done. Why?

The stealth in the game wasn’t bad like most other games during its time much like the shooting but fear also had that good gameplay and horror elements but the as the story continued things became rock as the story became weaker. People liked the interaction and story of the metro series I know I wouldn’t have cared if there wasn’t a good story, memorable moments and the world building. Like spec ops the line it was a ok shooter but the story made things interesting enough to make it different then other shooters during its time.

@Brupcat Brupcat true had that horror survival in it, and when the game wanted you to feel something you were gonna feel it. I played the game on PS4 but I played metro exodus first then went into the other games because I heard of the story and wanted to experience it, I bought both older games and played them primarily for the story but enjoyed playing it stealthily and the concepts in the world such as the dark ones, the mutated, the both dead and alive people, and the how people were surviving interested me as well, I heard people’s side stories which made me want to destroy a enemy faction even more then before as the game went on or listen to a man talk about the old world’s animals.Graphic weren’t that big for me but things were very noticeable, character deaths were probably the funniest shit I saw in the game as I would kill someone or a cutscene would happen with the A.I being on the ground in the level and their faces would still be moving, graphics were good enough. Overall I still enjoyed the game.

I just consider this Neil Druckmann's personal "official" fanfiction that he, as the VP of the company, made the rest of ND go along with. He wasn't VP of the company with the first game and had Bruce Straley above him to keep him in check, thank God. It's a shame he and Amy Hennig are gone now though. If it was the old team and the old situation/company structure as the first game, we probably would have actually gotten a tragic yet satisfying sequel. No one expected it to be all sunshine and roses, but they could have done this WAY better.

You should definitely just sail away, instead of taking the anchor and crushing the back of her skull, even though she's clearly insane and may well just change her mind yet again at any point in the future and hunt you down when you least expect it, because killing named LGBTQ characters is bad, right Abby? Ellie: *Killing strangers she's never met, that have done nothing to her, by the truckload and their pets? No problem. Super Easy. Barely an inconvenience! *Beating Abby's friend with a pipe, who helped her hunt down & kill Joel, after she laughs in your face about Joel screaming like a little bitch as he was beaten to death? Terrible. Absolutely traumatising. May never get over it. *Finding Owen and Mel and having to defend yourself when they try to kill you? Super traumatising to the point where you lose conscious thought and leave a map showing where you base is for Abby to find next to the bodies of her true love and his pregnant girlfriend. *Eventually finding Abby after tracking her for months across thousands of miles of zombie wasteland, killing untold numbers of random npc's along the way, only to find her strung up to die a slow, painful death? You rescue her, of course. Then change your mind for a stupid hand to hand fight when you've lost a quart of blood after having a tree branch jammed into your guts? Perfectly sensible idea! Lose a couple of fingers, but finally have the person who tortured your Dad to death in front of you at your mercy? Let them go! Of course. It makes perfect sense, because killing is bad Well, killing is bad if it's a handful of named characters who helped Abby kill Joel in a disgusting and brutal way. Killing is impossible, if it's Abby herself, because that would deprive Neil of the new female Joel for his IP. Bathing in the blood of your enemies whenever you have control of the character instead of the writer, though, that's not only encouraged, it's actually required. It's the reverse of reality and renders the entire premise the game rests on nonsensical & the gameplay invalidates it utterly.

My biggest problem with this game is the fact that it just threw away the main characteristic of the first one that made it such a special game. For me, the most special thing about TLOU is the fact that it tells a story in a post-apocalyptic setting with great tenderness in a natural way. There are plenty of stories set in a post-apocalyptic universe full of pain, violence, tragedy and hopelessness. TLOU managed to perfectly balance the elements of negativity common in stories of the genre, such as death, tragedy and misery. Along with elements of positivity, such as love, tenderness and redemption, without making it feel forced. I consider the story of the first game to be infinitely more courageous than that of the second precisely because of this, it is a story with a cliché theme, told in an innovative way with unusual elements in stories of the genre. Making a story in a post-apocalyptic world full of violence and despair, with an extremely bitter ending, makes the game just another story in a post-apocalyptic world, full of violence and despair, with an extremely bitter ending. Trying to make a sequel with a story with the same approach as the first game, with a balance between negativity and positivity, would have been much more challenging and courageous for the creative team. For me the route they chose is the easy route. Subverting expectations and breaking paradigms established in the previous game is much more comfortable than trying to maintain the paradigms and reach the expectations of the fans in an intelligent and creative way without making it feel like the first game's story is just being recycled. That would be the real challenge for the writers, challenging the fans without relying on ye olde subversion of expectations, it's just too easy to get a strong emotional reaction from fans by using shock value

But I agree with you because my problem is that the flashback scenes from both Ellie and Abby should have built up to Joel being killed at the climax of the game like 15 hours in instead of the first 2 hours. And that's where it end, with us not knowing what abby wants. Part 3 : almost the same story as this, except we start as Abby and the ending is different. This would've made SOOOOOO much more sense to actually bond with a character then have them kill the MC, instead of them immediately killing Joel as soon as they are introduced which just makes you hate them no matter how the game tries to change things around. An entire game is the least you can do for us to empathize with someone that kills the MAIN CHARACTER of he franchise.

I really don't understand how anyone can defend the story of this game. Especially, from outlets like KindaFunnyGames who call the story a masterpiece. I mean come on. I am a pretty hardcore last of us fan and hearing journalists call "abby's story better than ellie's" just pisses me off. Abby was a complete psychopath and they wanted me to get to like her over a 10 hour side quest??? When he brings up the pacing, the pacing was atrocious during her portions of the game. tbh i actually really enjoyed the bittersweet nature of the story and the characters, like there the sayings, "revenge is a fools game & the sad thing is good people do bad things too.... Like Ellie's story line is so tragic and sad that it genuinely left a massive impression on my heart. Like yes i didnt want to play as Abby at first and yes I absolutely hated beating up Ellie as Abby, but you know if you just actually immerse yourself into the world and forget about all of the little things like relationships and Joels death and all of that you can just see that there really arnt any good or bad guys in the world. The whole "unlikable characters" theme going on in media over the last few years has really gotten to the point where I'm staying away from most of western media already. Disney Star Wars has basically only unlikable assholes as characters and the ones that one could come close to like (Poe for example) are portrayed as negative examples. The last two Star Trek shows basically only had unlikable asshole characters. A while ago I watched Castlevania which also lacks decently written characters. Currently Space Force is another one of those where I basically stopped watching because everything (including the characters) is basically shit. I think it's as sign how little self awareness writers within western society have these days. They want to force certain messages into their stories but do it in the worst ways and don't realize how much they mutilate their character personalities just for the sake of a point that is wrong to begin with...

I think the reason why we had to play as Abby for so long because Neil really wanted us to love her as much as we did Joel. That way if they ever make another game that one would be about her and her journey afterwards. Regardless, it’s bullshit. Because no matter what Neil does, no one will ever love Abby as much as we did Joel, because no one gives a single shit about her. I know like only a couple people who do.

It's a great story just badly paced and jumbled. Imo flashbacks first, introduce Abby, play as Abby, Joel death, after this the game should pick up the pace till the ending.

If you wanted a feel good action game then play uncharted. This is equivalent to a horror/thriller movie, uncomfortable scenes with tough endings. A lot of the comments about stupid things in the story are answered if you just pay attention to the tons of details they put into the game. Like why would Joel and Tommy trust a stranger and not just shoot her or leave her to the infected? The story tells you multiple times that Jackson has been taking in stragglers but also fighting off groups of hunters. They also make big points about WLF shooting on sight and that’s not how things are done in Jackson. Sure the story could have been better but it’s not a flaming pile of garbage like some say. Yes the point of playing as Abby is to try to get you to start liking her for it all to come to a head when she’s about to slash a pregnant woman’s throat. There are a lot of parallels and metaphors in the story and sure it’s a bit politicized but what movie/media now a days doesn’t try to portray some kind of deep message? I wouldn’t be surprised if most of Abbys gameplay was added after to make the story longer. Imagine the complaints if you removed those chapters and people spent $60 on 15 hours. Granted the original is 15 hours but people still would have complained.

I feel you bro. I expected his death and I was expecting it to be handled well but it wasn’t. Maybe Joel defending Ellie and tommy in a hypothetical ending to get infected, he tells Ellie to let himself see Sarah and Ellie sends Joel to heaven. The game ends celebrating his life instead at a funeral. Just an idea tho. Love to see how others feel it should’ve went.

Tyler was right on the money in regards to the story. I personally thought the gameplay itself was pretty solid but the story was awful. Here's my main issue, besides all the things Tyler mentions - Abby, the character we DON'T care about and that we're not attached to and invested in loses a lot but still gets a "satisfying" ending to her story. Ellie, the character we DO care about, and who had most of her screen time stolen, not only loses EVERYTHING but doesn't get a satisfying ending out of it either. She loses everything and gains nothing. Naughty Dog forgot why everyone loved the first game. Ellie and Joel were such hugely likable characters, and one of them got taken away in the most nonsensical way possible whilst the other was destroyed and pushed aside for no logical reason.

the gameplay wasnt good man the upgrade tree was literally dogshit and one dimensional... i literally had no excitement in looking at those upgrades neither tweaking on the work bench. the RPG element was so boring i didnt even wanna get into it tbh. the gameplay was very clunky i dont know why but the shooting just felt off even tyler1 talks about this. the enemey concept was actually good as was the world building.
