That's a shame about Paramount Plus. It seemed like a service looking for an audience when it started, but between shows like Tulsa King and its streaming of our local CBS affiliate, we've been watching it more and more. I'm grandfathered in with my internet plan to get Max, and love it, too. I fear every time there's a change in owners that it's going to be the end of the line for that deal. They've got a series based around Batman's Penguin that I really hope we get to see (and is actually good). If all of the currently available content survived the mergers, this COULD be a good thing, a one-stop shop similar to cable for everything streaming... but it seems like some content always gets tossed, and as you mentioned the prices are going up and up, meeting or surpassing cable if you have multiple services. Who had "cable becomes competitively priced with streaming services" on their 2024 bingo card?? (Not me!)
@nickperkins847711 ай бұрын
The expansion of Disney+ was built into the app from the beginning. In 2017 or so, when Bob Iger announced the name of the app, the word “Plus” accommodates every bit of expansion the service has seen/will continue to see.

paramount +is the same- added showtime- MGM is part of Prime so that leaves Starz- Cinemax- Curiosity Stream and a few other small ones the fight will be between Max- Peacock and Hulu to divide up the rest- Peacock would be wise to grab Starz to stay even with Paramount+ before another streaming app does
@harrykatsaros11 ай бұрын
There’s only room for 2 players to be wildly successful with this streaming thing long term. This is how I see this all playing out over the next 5-10 years. 1. WBD and Paramount merge. In a few years Comcast buys them. Eventually Amazon buys this combined company. 2. Apple feeling the pressure to compete with Amazon buys Disney. 3. Netflix can no longer compete with the 2 big tech behemoths with unlimited pockets and huge libraries. Netflix goes up for sale and Apple and Amazon duke it out for the last remaining big player.
@ShallIStreamIt11 ай бұрын

The only thing with this is, Amazon would have to probably buy all of Comcast which I don't see happening easily, that's if Comcast wants to put itself up for sale. Companies you don't typically hear about being bought or the the idea of being bought but instead is doing the buying themselves in regards to entertainment is typically AT&T & Comcast, granted AT&T is mostly out of media now.

You are absolutely right about Peacock not being a good brand name. A customer would have to make the connection that its from NBC which is not a given these days. Not only that but it doesn't leverage the Universal brand at all since you'd have to know that its also part of the Comcast umbrella. What I'd like to see is an animation platform that combines Warner Brothers, Dreamworks, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon. I think that would be a must have competitor or complement to Disney for families.
@judaegekikamen422311 ай бұрын
As much as I agree with you completely about an animation platform, there's too owners who would fight for licensing and how much of what content gets pushed. The hard truth is that profits are the focus not the satisfaction of the consumer.
@TechxGremlin11 ай бұрын
The one sleeper here is Warner Bros Discovery, I say buy paramount. Then focus on making the overall company successful and produce more HBO type quality content for Max and they could easily be going blow for blow with Disney. I honestly like a lot of Max's content! They just need people in the driver seat who truly want to see them win and are willing to do whatever it takes to be great.
@scpatl4now11 ай бұрын
The problem is that WBD is so loaded with debt now for past M&A that taking on another debt ridden company is just going to make all that worse. You only borrow from Peter to pay Paul for so long before it all comes crashing down.
@TechxGremlin11 ай бұрын
@@scpatl4now Very true, they'll have to figure out their debt problems. If they can do that then they have potential otherwise it's potentially a slow death at this point. Probably an unpopular opinion, but the only company I'd trust with HBO/WBD is Apple at this point. Apple has showed they know how to do quality in my opinion with some of their Apple Tv+ shows.

I think you are correct about the wisdom of combining Disney+ with Hulu. My remaining question there is ESPN+. As a subscriber to The Disney Bundle, I am wondering how Mr. Iger will handle launching the complete ESPN app he wants juggling with ESPN+. I think it would be wise to convert ESPN+ to what he wants, rather than launching a fourth app. Or, bring true Live TV to Disney+ in a huge Disney+ offering truly combining the three services.
@ShallIStreamIt11 ай бұрын
I really hope, at minimum, they include ABC on Disney+ the way Paramount+ & Peacock do with CBS/NBC. It would be nice to be able to stream the Oscars on Disney+.
@nickperkins847711 ай бұрын
@@ShallIStreamIt yes!! Live feeds of The Disney Channel, ESPN channels, and what Fox/FX products they can stream would be great. Max should do the same thing with its HBO and basic cable channels. Hey matt how long will the streaming wars last
@scpatl4now11 ай бұрын
I agree with the analysis of who will stay and who will go. These Wall St types who invaded these companies just did not understand how streaming works. Netflix used to pay CBS/Viacom (aka Paramount) over a billion dollars for the rights to stream The CW shows after they finished airing. When they went with their own service, they pulled all that content behind their own streaming offerings along with the failure which was DC TV. They took a billion dollars of monetized content and put it behind their paywall where it generated a big fat zero. I don't know a lot of people that would subscribe just to watch that (and if they did they would drop it soon enough after watching it). That is just malpractice in this industry. Now they are kinda figuring out with going back to licensing content to Netflix at the cost of BILLIONS of dollars they lost because they didn't know what they were doing, and now we will all pay the price for it

Business-wise, I don’t think DirecTV or Dish (which owns Sling) are doing too hot and I know at least Sling has been losing subscribers. I think their respective companies will continue to kick the can down the road, though. As for others I didn’t mention- Philo’s future could be complicated as Paramount & WBD own stakes in it & both could merge/be acquired. Frndly will continue to exist, it’s profitable but has a specific niche. Vidgo is dead. LocalBTV is dead.

We're tired of show shopping. Property tax increases & price gouging while wages flat result is working two jobs = no time to sit on couch & won't get burned again by streaming. Case in point Yellowstone. Great first two seasons then devolved into pulp mill formulaic writing by Sheridan and a marketing tool to promote spin offs & merch. Then they moved it to so many different streamers we just finally gave up trying to find it. Chip & Joanna another bloated pricey show pulled to HGTV plus streaming. Big mistake, never watched the show again, just not that important. Overall streaming became too expensive, we bought an antenna watch free stuff and its just fine.

How is Max a better brand than Peacock ? It is way to generic adds tons of confusion. If you were to do a search for max on any search engine if you were to type the word max in with no other context would the streaming service pop up? Peacock on the other hand if more memorable, only has one other thing that could pop up during a search the animal named Peacock that in itself makes it better. Max is the equivalent of calling a streaming service streaming or calling a soda brand soda its way to generic.
@ShallIStreamIt11 ай бұрын
I see your point. But I’ve also seen Peacock’s name as the butt of one too many unfortunate jokes. It’s interesting to see WBD use “CNN Max” as their branding for the news section and I think “(insert title)-Max” will be something they’ll use for additional add-ons in the future. I don’t LIKE this idea but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make HBO a premium tier add-on and bring back “HBO Max” for the premium tier’s branding (similar to what Paramount did w/ Showtime).
