Surprised you didn’t get the Street Fighter reference at the diner… “ALLYOUCAN…. EEAAT!” “HAUDOOKEN!” Also, Soos is stuck “inside a video game” named NORT (spell it backwards ;) )

This episode makes me think back to the arcade I used to hang out at a lot when the first _Street Fighter_ game came out. The cabinet had big punch pads instead of regular buttons. I remember it ended up being broken about 70% of the time because people would absolutely beat the hell out of the pads. So, I wasn’t too surprised when the _Street Fighter II_ cabinet did not have the pads.

_Of course_ Robbie feels threatened by a twelve-year-old kid. He knows he cannot possibly compete with _that!_ It shows excellent self-awareness on his part.

This series has a few episodes that are often compared to things that actually came out a bit later - the most commonly noticed example is in early season 2, an episode that most reactors think is a mash-up of two things that the episode pre-dates. I haven't seen the Wreck-It Ralph comparison for this one before, but Fight Fighters came out about 6 weeks before that movie. I do see why you'd think of Scott Pilgrim as well though, and that movie did come out a couple of years before this (and of course the comic is older than that). So that could well have been an inspiration, with the irl video-game-style fights over a girl.

There is a Gravity Falls game on the 3DS: Legend of the Gnome Gemulets. It's . . . not worth $40. It was kinda fun for fans, but ultimately I would not recommend seeking it out unless you're _really_ into the show. A good litmus would be if you enjoy solving the ciphers in the credits. While the game is a platformer, its core appeal is how well they portrayed the town and surrounding country, as numerous levels take direct inspiration from the show for their backgrounds. Also, Robbie's birthday was in March 1996, meaning that he is 16 years old as of this episode, approximately 1.5 years older than Wendy & 3.5 years older than Dipper. Again, take those numbers with a grain of Wikipedia salt.

"Fight Fighters": Dipper gets on the bad side of Robbie, and is challenged to a showdown. Dipper makes a huge mistake and Robbie is chased all over the town. Dipper and Robbie come to an understanding and life goes on.;) I was a bit too old for the video game arcade wave, so "Rumble McSkirmish" didn't make much of impression on me. Then I discovered Sierra Online's "Space Quest," and Space Janitor Roger Wilco became my favorite computer game character.;)

The one thing I'm not a fan about in this episode is the whole endorsement of traditional masculine gender norms. No, refusing to fight a 16 year old as a 12 year old does not make you any less of a "man". In fact, nothing you do should be in service of the traditional norms of a gender that was assigned to you at birth. Gender is invented. You're a human being first and foremost. The show unfortunately adheres to this same traditional gender fundamentalism in two other episodes - Dipper vs. Manliness, and a future one I won't disclose.

This definitely stuck out to me! It's feels a little contrived for how smart the shows comedy usually is.
@dewdney1015 ай бұрын
I guess I never looked at it that way. I thought the "be a man" stuff was all Stan's own weird hangups and we know he isn't the ideal role model. I also kinda view the other ep you're referring to that way. I read this more as having to deal with the consequences of your actions slash just having to grit your teeth and bear unpleasant people or situations cause there's no shortcut to that. edit: your view makes complete sense, if I rewatch the show I'll be keeping a keener eye out for
@20000dino5 ай бұрын
@@dewdney101 I'm glad you think it makes sense now, because the show literally and explicitly frames these lessons through the lens of traditional masculine ideals. It's just a fact. In this episode, both Grunkle Stan and Soos make it a point that not showing up to the fight would be the attitude of a "wimp" as opposed to that of "a man". In Dipper vs. Manliness, whilst the episode could've simply ended with Dipper defying the Manotaurs' notions of manliness and their attribution to self-worth, they still made it a point to have Grunkle Stan recognize Dippers' masculinity. In none of these episodes are these perspectives proven wrong, contradicted, or even defied (including the future episode I won't delve into). They're always the endnote to the episode, the final takeaway. It doesn't matter that the show often does not present Grunkle Stan as an ideal role model because it just as often does the opposite - and it doesn't exactly make it subtle whenever it does. Grunkle Stan isn't exactly a one-note character. I like Gravity Falls, but like any other piece of media, it's not above criticism. It's just stubborn and small-minded to immediately assume the creators must have had another contrived reason to make these choices when it's clearly easier to recognize these obvious mishaps for what they are. Sometimes writers just mess up. It's as simple as that.
