Hey guys, thanks for checking this one out. The game isn't remembered fondly by the fighting game community due to some poor choices in monitization. To answer the question about the water art style, it was an evolution of the theme of "ink" from Street Fighter 4 that was used as a visual motif. They expanded it in this game to be "water and ink" to symbolise the clash between the two side. And yes, Ogre and Akuma are the final bosses of the game. If you play as Tekken characters you fight Akuma and if you play SF characters you fight Ogre. The story involves an alien box called Pandora that will open and grant a wish to the winner of the tournament. You can check out the cutscenes for the arcade mode on youtube. Congrats again guys, thanks for checking this out, it's been very nostalgic for me. :)

About all the liquid visual effects: In an interview, someone on the development or PR team explained that the idea came from the fact that Street Fighter and Tekken were vastly different fighting games and putting them together was going to be like mixing water and oil, but they were going to try to make it work. This idea got kinda mixed up in practice though. At first I thought that SF was the water and TK was the oil as made apparent in the 1st trailer, but based on all the other ones it looks more like the water is for the "heroes" and more neutral characters of both series while only villains got the oil. The game also had several animated shorts focused on the DLC characters and story mode cutscenes for everyone if you want to check out this game some more.

Street Fighter X Tekken definitely have one of the BEST trailers of all time. The use of splash art with movement (I'm sorry if that's not what it's called) was really well done and made it stand out from most fighting game trailers. And the lore between the 2 series always intrigues me, because separately, they are their own beasts. But crossovers have happened a lot for these 2 franchises. Street Fighter holding a majority of cameos since as far as I remember, Ryu is basically the Capcom poster boy when it comes to being a SF rep in other worlds. Maybe more than Akuma, but I haven't researched it to make sure.

These cinematics were always super good, especially in 2011/2012 when the were coming out. It's unfortunate the game itself was an absolute disaster when it came out but they absolutely killed it with these trailers. The Juri/M. Bison Vs. Xiao/Jin one will always be one of the best trailers in gaming.

About the water splashes, basically Capcom decided to make trailers for their fighting games with specific art styles starting on 2008 with Street Fighter IV: that game got Japanese ink painting style for its trailers. The expansion, Super Street Fighter IV, got a new opening movie with handdrawn style. Street Fighter X Tekken got these very unique water splashes, and finally, Marvel vs. Capcom 3/Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 received the cel-shaded comic-book animations. As to the reason why, I think it was due to the great reception that those unique first trailers for SFIV received. People responded very well to them because usually CG trailers are very samey and those were something we had never seen before as a form of video game marketing. Akuma and Ogre aren't technically the strongest SF and Tekken characters, but I'd say they are the most iconic bosses. The story of this game revolves around an alien box that falls from outer space called Pandora which the characters believe will grant them their wishes. The characters fight as duos, and each ending shows what happens when each duo defeats either Akuma or Ogre and claims the box. It doesn't have a Story Mode like MK does, but the Arcade Mode works as a mini story mode for each duo.

We can appreciate the stylization to help the trailers stand out and separate them from others. Giving each franchise its own unique flavor 🙂

If you're wondering about the third trailer, Rufus thought the red-wearing blond was his self-appointed rival Ken, who was eating on the floor above them. The Vita version had its own set of three cinematic episodes, but I don't know if that's what others are thinking of.

Man, I LOVE THIS GAME! And man, i really, REALLY expected Capcom and Namco to make anime about this game with epic fights and stuff, like they did when Capcom released Street Fighter 4 there was anime, and not one but few. But sadly, they didn't make any. But i would LOVE to see Jin vs M.Bison battle in full power or Ryu vs Kazuya. Also, why did you guys missed a cinematic intro for this game? The "water" is a callback to the intro video for SF IV, the "watercolor" motif was a big theme in its advertising. While the DLC and monetization was a mess, the story has some great moments between the characters, you can tell the devs meant well, even if management went way overboard on the "live service" angle.

Tekken is getting a netflix series, there is a trailer out already. It'll cover the bases for the story of Tekken 3, potentially. We know it'll cover what happens before the tournament, but not if it'll cover the actual tournament. It's definitely the best part of the story, and this will be the most clear telling of the story since it changes with every new game because they can't make a decision on WHAT Devil is exactly. Also! Street Fighter had an amazing tv show, I want to say Alpha 2? But I'm probably wrong, I cannot remember which one, but it was amazing and I loved seeing it on early in the mornings, growing up. That might give some story into Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Bison, Chun-Li and maybe a couple of others. Also thanks for checking out the fighting game stuff. Fighting games are dope and the FGC is dope. From my recollection, the water style graphics were a choice to make the trailers stand out because the director/creators of the game wanted it to feel much different than the stand alone Street Fighter or Tekken games. but also they were strongly hinting at that time (2012) of the possibility of a future Movie with these two brands but due to the sales and the game not being successful; they didn't follow through. Instead they used the graphics in these trailers to help with Tekken animated movies that they made later on. You know what, there's a channel called "History behind the Warrior" that talks about fighting game characters, how about reacting to some of those to get more familiar with some characters

Trailblazing trailers. :D Was specially funny how Rufus mistook Bob for Ken; even though he has same hair-, and kinda clothing, color, did he really think a fighter like him would become a front-loader during his years? Ken is in too good shape for that. ^^

It was cool; shame Namco didn't hold up their end of the deal.
