Many of you have been watching my street food videos and wondering how I don’t get sick. First of all, I have gotten sick (twice!) I wanted to do a video on travel advice on street food safety and tips to avoid getting sick when you travel.
Below, I’m going to summarize the main points of the video. Watch the video for more detail.
STREET FOOD SAFETY : 14 TIPS FOR NOT GETTING SICK
There are many countries in which the drinking water is unsafe or unclean. Sometimes, the food practices aren’t so hygienic.
DON’T
1. Avoid the tap water.
SteriPEN Freedom: amzn.to/1okeG75
(my review : grrrltraveler.c...)
Lifestraw: amzn.to/1F7qT7h
2. Avoid foods that are washed in tap water (aka no raw salads)
3. Avoid the ice:
4. Avoid foods that have been out for hours or are attracting a lot of flies. Avoid meat.
5. Don’t let your guard down.
DO
6. Do take fruits and vegetables you can peel and don’t require preparation washing.
7. Do look for meals that are prepard on the spot and served hot
8. Do the food tours.
9. Eat the homemade yogurts
OBSERVE.
The great thing about street food is that you can see it being prepared in front of your eyes.
10. You can see how vendors prepare their food and their hygiene habits.
11. Do visit food stalls/hawkers that’s frequented by locals
12. Any place is fair game. Not only street food. Restaurants don’t mean better
GETTING SICK
Sometimes, getting sick is inevitable when you travel a lot.
13. Do get sick. You’ll learn resourcefulness and confidence.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
If all else fails and you still feel worried after all the tips I’ve shared with you…

I've been sick (truly sick) a couple of times. 1. Chaing Mai Thailand- my gallbladder was going to rupture and I needed emergency surgery. (I'm amazed with myself, how I had surgery alone in a foreign country and I persisted), 2. Phom Penh Cambodia - Salmonella poisoning... Both times I asked the person at the front desk of my hostel where the best place to go for medical attention was and they both directed me to excellent care facilities for Western travellers. Also, people are amazing and when I had surgery the owners of the hostel I was staying at came to visit me in the hospital, brought me flowers, and helped me out immensely post op. I have two life long friends because of this. So, if something goes wrong like that don't worry, you're not alone and people are kinder than you give them credit for. Also, TRAVEL INSURANCE IS A MUST!!!! I met too many people while travelling who fell off their motorbikes and had very bad infections and injuries but were fucked because they didn't buy travel insurance.

Overall, pretty good info. I've been to Thailand many times, and I've only been sick once. Amazingly, it was from a restaurant I had been to many times. It was an American BBQ rib place in the Central Embassy mall. It put me down hard- 5 full days. I was so sick that my girlfriend even skipped a family member's funeral to take care of me. We went to a doctor, but all I could really do was to wait for it to pass. I'm still shocked that I got sick there because I had eaten there many times before, and always looked forward to going there for a "familiar, western" meal. Aside from that, I do love eating street foods. I always look for food that I can buy straight off of the grill. You are 100% right about one of my favorite pieces of advice- go where the locals are eating. Especially locals with kids. While I don't interact with the Thai police, I do pay attention to where they eat. That food had better be good, because nobody wants the Thai police to be upset with them! LOL

Easy tip: Busier the street food joint, safer it is. Indians love their street food, many of them throng at places which are hygenic. Do not be taken aback by use of hands in food preparation. Indian street delicacies require a lot of direct hand contact with food. Famous vendors do take precaution like washing hands prior preparation.

Excellent points, Christine. My favorite method is to look carefully at the ground around the food cart. If you see blood, puke, or any other bodily fluids, you may not want to eat there. Other sure indicators are customers doubled over in pain or the odd corpse clutching something from the menu in his/her hand.

Fantastic tips as always!! I adore street food, but funnily enough the two places I've gotten full-on food poisoning overseas were 1)a Thai hotel restaurant that cost 3x the price of any other meal I had over there, and 2)a starbucks in Indonesia that fellow travellers dragged me to. I don't even like starbucks, so that was particularly annoying haha! Should've went with my instinct and just gotten a bottle of water!

Another trick i learnt in Thailand is to eat where it's lots of people and kids are being fed. My favourite street stall in Bangkok (it's closed now) used to get fresh ingredients every morning, had a electric cooler to keep meats cold and always sold out by the end of the day. Food sold out = closed for the day. Actually, I got stuck on the thunder bucket for 2 days after eating at a Korean fried chicken place in Bangkok. That 5-minute walk to a local Boots pharmacy to get some Loperamide felt like ages.

My husband goes to third world countries all the time for his business dealings. He was advised ( after getting sick ) to always order local raw onions (any type will do) with his meals. So basically, either eat the raw onion first thing or cut up and mix with your meal. 8 years later and he hasn't gotten sick even once ( knock on wood). Good luck

When my son had a tooth infection and had to take really strong antibiotics the dentist recommended yogourt pills because you can only eat so much yogourt and as you said not all yogourt have the good bacteria. They were fairly inexpensive, over the counter at a chain pharmacy. Something people may want to consider carrying if they're travelling to places that are notorious

The LifeStraw also has an option where you can get a life straw already inside a bottle that you can pour water into. I took that with me when going on a recent India trip all over to Chennai, Tirapati, Kerala and Agra. That extra precaution gave me peace of mind to help me enjoy my trip.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. After a few trips to Thailand over the years, I never once fell ill from "FBI", aka food poisoning. I always watch the vendor before deciding. Are they cross contaminating? Contacting raw proteins and then handling the cooked foods? They all will be handling currency too and well that's the way it goes. I would think the street vendors indeed have concerns about the reputation of their food being safe. Just choose wisely and enjoy.

+GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa It was fried rice! The last thing I was thinking about being careful eating. I think what happened was the rice was left out for a long time and reused, which got me sick. It was a crowded restaurant in Vang Vieng too! Just bad luck and let my guard down even when I realized it was not that hot. Just slipped my mind Never again! lol

What's better than yogurt is kombucha. You can take the scoby around with you in a ziplock bag and just make some tea whenever you need more. It doesn't need to be refridgerated and only takes 3 days to develop the probiotics needed.

Go for Packaged drinking water, it is available throughout the country even the most remote places. For Americans, a litre of packaged drinking water will cost you 50 cents. if it is a mineral water upto a dollar or two. Eat food that's really hot and make sure you use a disposable cup or plate and you should be okay. I am an Indian, We do the same thing ourselves.

Great video! For me, any time I get food poisoning it brings me back to all the other weird places I've gotten sick. They're some of my favorite stories but anecdotes about sh*tting your pants in an Uzbek field don't make for great party conversation. These days I just expect it - even if I'm careful but I still manage to catch something on most trips.

Bobby (gold Coast,Australia) Hey Christine The last thing you want is sick memories when you on enjoyable travels. To avoid wasting unnecessary time in going through the sick agony and staggering all the way to the hospital or chemist, you could just gulp some Johnny Walker whisky without hesitation. You'll feel a burning sensation all the way from your throat to your guts. Immediately you'll feel energize. Visualize a Scotsman battling the cold dressed in his kilt. Since Whisky can start a fire, it would have killed the bacteria in your food poising.After killing the bacteria, you can eat good bacteria yogurt in absence of the bad ones. Try my advise when you do get food poising again. There's only one sickness whisky can't help you. Because this sickness is what every woman yearns for ? That is " love sickness " especially when you hit mid life crises with " love handles ". Perhaps by exercising with a Hula Hoop can at least balance your waist fat so that you won't fall over. Without love, it's like a fish without water. Oh by the way, you can get a tooth implant for USD$250 in Mumbai, India.

At the end we are told to get travel insurance. No doubt your getting a commission for each person who clicks on the link of the insurance and takes a policy out. However, travel insurance are notoriously difficult to get paid out on. I did a quick google on trust pilot of world nomads insurance which you shared in the link and not surprisingly they have horrendous reviews in 50% of cases of not getting compensated, and delays going on for months at a time.

1. In your research, did you read the date I published this video? 2. Aside from that- you need to research coverage comparisons and pricing vs what you need. I recommended WN & I still stand by them, because it covers my half of my gear and adventures activities I love that *many* insurance companies do not cover. I still use them for my trips as do many of my travel vlogging/blogging friends. 3. All insurance companies can feel like scams, esp if you failed to *read the fine print* of what it covers and NOT. It's very specific with instructions on what you need to procure in police reports and receipt to collect.

Loved this video and your amazing tips!! We've really only traveled in Europe and Mexico outside of the States so this is going to be super helpful! (I'm Spanish and American) It's not only that water in a particular place may be unclean, it could be clean but just have a different micro biology than your body is used to. When we would go from NorCal to the Silcon Valley my husband would get the scours. So when we went to Spain for our honeymoon I tried to have him drink only bottled water, he didn't believe me ("Spain isn't a third world country silly wife"). So a lot of our honeymoon was taxi-ing back to the condo for bathroom breaks!
@grrrltraveler
@grrrltraveler 8 жыл бұрын
+rubymimosa haha, sorry about the shitty honeymoon. I believe in microbiology ; sometimes the water is considered bad in a place , but not to the point wehre it's dangerous. Like maybe LA or SF... you don't want to drink the water but if you do, you won't get seriously il, like you might in india. How was the water in Mexico?.
@rubymimosa
@rubymimosa 8 жыл бұрын
+GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa The water in Baja, where my in laws have a home, is fantastic actually. What was funny about the honeymoon is that many condos in Zaragoza were retrofitted and the toilet room is really small, worked fine for my grandmas and uncle (who are shorter than my own 5'). But even for me the closed door pressed against my knees. My hubby is 6'8" so the door jam came mid-thigh to him. And although the family was fine with him sitting with the door open, the toilet closet was on the balcony, right off the kitchen and the grandmas wouldn't leave the kitchen to give him privacy. So two little old ladies talking to him while he was "busy" and their boxer or Pyranees mastiff laying their head on his lap was too much for his "Yankee" concepts of privacy. So taxis back to our more modern condo was his solution : ). Poor guy!

oh gee, the horror of having seafood from buffet down in Puerto Villarta (restaurant hut style), the seafood sitting out, I only had a few bites, tasted funny, didn't notice until 3rd bite due to hot sauces... I was out of commission the next day, drinking pepto, pink stuff, Rolaids, tums, water, and cold sweats. My guard was down for just that one moment, that all it took. Big oops, managed to recover by that evening thank goodness. From then on i asked the water too prepare my meal plain which I didn't know you can do since there's a buffet, so that was a good tip by a fellow traveler. :-)

+Jon Different ways~ sometimes, there's a pile of cooked food, where you know it wasn't cooked right then and there. Cold food (or not seeing heat rising from it) is another sign. ... And lots of flies.

Love your tips,there very very helpful. I went last year to India and thank God didn't get sick,but you won't believe where I got sick,it was in the airplane,I fainted and threw up what I ate in the plane. I think it was when we were so high up and blood pressure maybe went down,I started to feel like my stomach was not well,then like bothering in my chest and getting dizzy,I stood up to go to the washroom and didn't make,I fainted right in front and never realized I threw up until I woke up. This was on my way to India, so when I was coming back to USA I looked up in google about it and learned that had to drink lots of water and even orange juice be hydrated,so I did I thank God it didn't happen. But it will be nice a video of airport and flight problems or how to avoid fainting in plane lol😁😀. Thank God I had a friend travelling with me and she took great care of me even though she was terrified when I was at floor and didn't answer. Well God bless you and take care.

In NEPAL and India they all know about a bad stomach so asking people and using a local pharmacy has helped me. Sometimes diarrhea occurs but goes away just reaction to food or go up market a bit. One thing i always use is a good gargle for bacteria. Salt gargle even. Clean hands after handling money and days out walking around. How clean does the wait staff look. I have not been sick in Nepal for a very long time as most places wash veg in iodine and water is filtered. But you are absolutely right about going to a hospital if things are really worrying. There’s a very good hospital in Pokhara now staffed with Indian doctors.

I am an African American female with very long dreadlocks... I don't want to stand out when I go to India...was thinking about wearing a sari and covering my head... will that draw more attention or should I just be me... I am clear on the fact that I have to dress appropriately.,.

I think good travel insue cost a lot if you want to be 100% covered. It seems there are just so many hidden clauses that some travel insurance does not meet all traveling scenarios. I never use travel insurance, and just make sure I have enough $ to make it home. My health insurance overs me internationally, but you still need money up front in most cases. I just don't think the average travel insurance policy is what most people would ultimately need in the case of the worse case scenario, so that's why I rather just be self-insured and not waste my $ and time trying to have a clear approved.

Hello! :-) Could I please have your advice? I shall be travelling solo around India for six month’s from October. I am a little nervous about getting some form of poisoning or ‘Delhi belly’. From your experience would you recommend going straight to a hospital or approaching a pharmacy should it happen? Thank you :-)

+Bryan Hawkins You're welcome! I feel like the Thai are experts at street food in general, bc their culture revolves around it. The water situation in Thailand (especially Bangkok) doesn't feel as in-the-red as other places, so I tend to accidentally drop my guard there a lot. I've actually had the 'not good' ice in my smoothies. lol.

Hey! I am leaving for India on a 1 way ticket in April and I'm really worried about getting sick from the water. Does the life straw or water purifying tablets actually make tap water drinkable? I'm happy to buy bottled but I'm gonna be on a really tight budget so being able to fill up a bottle from the Tap and purify it would be great! Thanks!

Yup. I've also bought mini boiling wands in India but I was fortunate to find a household store selling it. Haven't used tablets. After getting sick, I don't worry about it anymore. Just go to the city hospital. Hospitals can be inexpensive and they'll diagnose you straight off w/ meds. The local pharmacies are pretty stocked w/ meds you would need prescriptions for in the U.S..

I feel like it's almost unavoidable for a person from a Western country to not get sick. You have to understand that people in India have stomachs that are accustomed and acclimated to the germs of that area. Meaning, they have evolved to be able to stomach that food. A food that might make someone sick, might not make the average Indian sick. They have different immunities. It's not that the children and families are being careful about what they eat, it's that their stomachs are stronger than yours. Indians can eat anything from street vendors and usually not get sick. As was said, a lot of these places, especially with street foods, their hygiene is always going to be bad. The reason why the people in India survive and get used to it, is because their stomachs are stronger. So, you could either eat the stuff and just risk getting sick and possible parasites that hopefully can be treated afterwards, or you just don't eat it. I don't think there's any way to get around it. That being said Christine, since you've chosen to travel and try foods for a living, it might be okay for you to just keep eating and getting diarrhea and allowing your body to get used to it and also watching out to make sure you don't get tapeworms or some other infections or parasites. Maybe your body has already gotten a lot of immunity because of it. For people who are just wanting to visit the sites and are not too crazy about food and are just there for a short while, I actually might say, don't eat anything that's from street vendors or drink anything except bottled water/soda and just forget the food and just see the sites. However, if you really do want to experience the food, then you're just going to have to accept the diarrhea and sickness as part of the journey. For most people, they should be okay. Still it's good to avoid infections whenever you can, so the advice you gave here are great and everyone should avoid eating food that is spoiled or looks like is not well made.

You are absolutely correct about food tolerance and immunity. Killing the organism with a drug will not build tolerance or immunity. It will bring immediate relief, but you will remain vulnerable to re-exposure. If you are there to see the sights then the safest thing to do is bring meal replacement drinks and pack in safe snacks and water. If an important part of your trip is to also eat the local food, then make sure you know the fastest route to medical assistance.
@matterpal4347
@matterpal4347 6 жыл бұрын
Gilbert Gross, I completely agree with bringing your own meals and just eating bagged snacks. I don't understand why people who are only looking at sites for a few weeks go to eat the food from foreign countries as well, when for most Westerners, you're not gonna be able to eat it, even if it is from a restaurant, since they tend to use tap water which is also not potable for most Westerners. It should be more common knowledge that you bring your own foods. I never heard of meal replacement drinks... but that also sounds like a good idea.

WARNING Before eating street food take out life insurance first. I've heard that most street vendors buy blocks of ice at a reduced price from the mortuary, which had been used to keep a dead corpse on then the vendor will shave the ice into a class used for drinks
