The first time I travelled alone, was Mallorca. I was 18! (I'd been saving to buy a house & doing two jobs. I was exhausted. Spain was low cost; & i'll forever regret not buying a house there!) Head scarfed, black stockinged widows, hills and river caves. Mad, drunk English to avoid, (sex on their minds, but I, a teetotaller outran the drunk lechers) so restricted night excursions, but I did manage a few beautiful nightly beach walks, alone! So good! Very, very good (all of 43 years ago). I found what I never expected, a beautiful island. Love your work Kristin. ❤. Have love, will travel 😏

Perhaps something to add to the list is that inevitability when traveling alone, you’re going to visit or witness something so amazing that you’ll wish you had someone to share it with right at that moment. I’ve seen so many of the world’s natural wonders and often thought if only there was someone with me to remember it together and re-create the excitement when reminiscing. But having said all that, I still love solo travel and will never stop.

I am 68 and on my 12th solo trip. Right now in Costa Rica. It had been 2 years since I traveled solo and had those anxiety feelings as the plane landed at night in San Jose. Every trip is different, and I have found that I can talk to pretty much anyone and much more street smart. I do carry my concerns from the US and my personal life of a long separation from my husband with me. Feelings come to the surface. I like to combine my travel with nearby yoga places in the jungle. That really helps to connect with myself and others. The randomness and kindness of strangers is every day. Loneliness at times too. New friends on other days. Thank you, Kristin!

Hola Kristin, I have been traveling alone for 7 years now. Being 66 yo it's not as easy to meet people who have the same type of life. What I miss more is to be hable to share the beauty you see with other people. Loneliness is often there in front of a beautiful sunset.

I usually travel solo and it's easier. I don't have to be responsible for anyone else and that is a burden less when traveling alone. I don't have to change or rearrange my schedule for anyone. There are many other perks when you travel alone and for me it's my favorite way of traveling.

First time I traveled alone I was 21 and went to Mexico to study Spanish. Like you I remember being so afraid at the airport I almost changed my mind. I didn’t travel solo again until my 50s. At first I took baby steps taking a trip in my own state, then Europe and back to Mexico. It’s been life changing in such a positive way.

One way to try solo travel without it being so scary the first time is to go on your own, but on an adventure travel tour, with other people who you meet when you get there. That way you get the difficult bits like booking accommodation and getting from A to B done for you. It gives you the experience of travel and how everything works, before embarking somewhere entirely on your own the next time. It worked for me.

Everything that you said is right on! My solo travel began as an unplanned one. It began over 54 years ago, in early 1969, when I had decided to visit Europe for the 1st time, and I was only 20. When I ran out of asking ppl to join me, I posted a request for a travel companion at our colleges. One responded, and off we went. After three weeks of travel, my companion found another group of ladies that she preferred and walked off, leaving standing and crying on the Isle of Capri. Best thing that she could have done for me. I was then forced to depend solely on myself, to make choices of where I wanted to go, for how long, etc. I experienced everything that you mentioned, including finding a boyfriend (in London). I went on dates with locals, other foreign travelers, and some American military young men. I mingled with everyone and learned so much. I met a family on the train from Barcelona to Madrid and was invited to stay with them in their downtown apartment. We partied every single day. But I must say that back 54 years ago it wasn't the thing for such a young girl to travel all over Europe alone. And to complicate matters even more, the US was at war in Vietnam, and Europeans weren't so kind to Americans and so expressed their anger on us visitors. I remember many events as you mentioned, I was in Greece when we landed on the moon, and I was in Madrid when I read the headlines of Sharon Tates murder. I can hear songs popular from the Summer of 1969 that will take me back to many memories, and my emotions and feelings from that time all come back to revisit. Huge difference between then and now. For example, the cost to fly to Europe was very expensive, as were phone calls back to the US. I was gone for 2 months, and I could barely afford to call home one time only. Picture taking was with roll flim, and I had to return home 2 months later to see what turned. There were no cell phones with unlimited photos and text messaging. At this point, I feel as if I was a pioneer, who spent 2 months away from family and country, without contact but one single solitary phone call, and very few tourists 54 years ago. Thanks for sharing. 😊

I have been traveling mostly solo, ( I also love traveling with a very few friends and family members who share similar interests ) for a long time, thirty years. As a single woman it was nerve racking in the beginning, specially before cell phones and social media, like WhatsApp, which allows you to stay connected with friends and family. Now, it has become a new normal. Definitely, I always travelled to relatively ‘safe’ countries in Europe and Asia. I still don’t feel brave enough to go every place I want, since safety is my top concern. My first solo trip was to Edinburgh, Scotland. As you said, slowly I became confident and comfortable traveling by myself and it gave me a great sense of freedom and achievement for a painfully shy and introverted woman. BTW, I love your videos. ❤❤ You are one of the few solo female travelers I love to watch and appreciate your tips, suggestions etc. I am planning to retire in near future and travel long term if everything goes well. Happy Travels!🎉

I've traveled every which way of solo travel for 30+ years now, living/working in 40 countries and can relate to all your insightful points. I'm not sure if it's travel or just getting older but I no longer care what people think or try to keep up with trends. In fact, I recently decided to wear the same style of black cargo pants and slip-on shoes every day, and only switch up the top. As a chef, I wore a uniform every day so it feels natural to me - frees up a ton of packing space too! The people who know me don't care...and the people who care don't know me.

Hi Kristin, I've been traveling solo since the middle of May in 2022. I've had many highs as well as lows. I've learned so much about myself; I have the resourcefulness of a lioness! Originally from Virginia; I'm in Belgrade now for a month. Everything you're saying is so so true! After traveling in a group on a study abroad to Italy seven years ago, I knew I'd never want to travel in a group again! I'm an older lady, haha! I enjoy my own company and having the freedom to do what I want when I want. I can't imagine traveling any other way. It would be nice to have dinner with someone sometimes though, so thank you for the meet up suggestions. I am braver than I ever thought; coming to terms with not "fitting in" with my old social network from high school except for being a parent, has been challenging for me. I have come to realize I *must* create a new life for myself and that means letting go of just about everything I thought was "normal!" It's scary! Sometimes it's really hard but more often than not I wake up being so thankful that I'm still here to have these experiences. I appreciate what I have in this moment; I do miss my son terribly sometimes. He lives in L.A. Thank goodness for FB Messenger and Viber! He thinks what I'm doing is so cool and I know he is proud of me; having his support has given me even more confidence and has kept me going on the dark days. 😌

I travel by myself but do so in Groups. (Think Globus Escapes, Exotica, Driver in Morocco) I feel most comfortable with this, since I like the social interaction and I don't have the tediousness of transfers. So far-so good. I think it works best for me. I am older and just don't want to 'deal' with it. (I'm 62)

Great video 💯❤Your experiences serve as true model for on the fence travellers who need that extra shove to come out of their shells- male, female, any age group or background. I've been travelling solo for about 10 years and there's always something new that comes up, good and bad. The stigma of exploring, wandering and learning alone has lessened over the years thankfully. The social and cultural constructs of the past and still lingers to some extent today, there's so much unlearning as you stated (love that). Coming from Southern California, I know what it's like to be insulated with creature comforts that are taken for granted. Low maintenance, gratitude, no-glam is a big slice of humble pie for many in these parts. Continue to inspire, cheers 🍾🥂👏

First time watching, and many solo overseas travels under my belt. You did a great job explaining how solo travel is mostly a very positive thing. You hit most of the big topics that I have come across. It definitely will get you out of your comfort zone. if you haven't done it before, but you grow in such amazing ways, you see sights that others only see in movies, and meet the most amazing people. It is definitely life altering, and makes you more understanding how people across the globe are very similar in so many ways, and you become more accommodating when things don't go your way. I'm glad I found this channel and expect to watch a lot more of your content. I also enjoy your presentation style- very casual and personal. Thanks!

Yes, yes, yes! Kristin, you've really nailed the experience of being a solo traveller. The comments on the video are so worth reading. I think you have a cool online community here. One thing you didn't mention was language learning. That's my way into a culture, and Meetup groups can be good combination of locals and expats. Next up for me: Japan for the first time in November and I'm obsessed!

KRISTIN!!!!! Thank you SO much for creating the podcast and the KZbin Show!! I have been a sailor on cruise/research ships for the last 12 years. While it did provide lots of travel, I was still spending a crazy amount of time on the ship when all I really wanted to do was explore this incredible world! Listening to your podcast gave me the lightbulb moment and inspiration I needed to start my own Digital Nomad Journey. I am currently in Montezuma, Costa Rica (your old stomping grounds:) and as the stress of the "Northern Rat Race" dissipates, a new, refreshed version of me is immerging and I can't thank you enough! I took you with me everywhere in my headphones as I was planning this and you continue to inspire me here as I walk through this amazing countryside listening to your podcast for more great ideas and validation this was DEFINITELY the way to go! Pura Vida Kristin! Thank you so much!!

Great episode Kristin. Would you consider an episode on the “end game”? What is it that drives the Nomad. Is there a desire for permanency or more about living in the moment at the final destination? I think this depends on the person, but thought it an interesting perspective…

Hi Kirstin, yet another insightful posting (I've been following since you arrived here in M/cr). Personally, I'd say that there's a huge difference between feeling "lonely" ie bit of home sick, missing relatives (who may be a phone call away) etc ; than "isolated" (cut off, don't know anyone and don't know where to turn) - folk prone to feeling isolated should definitely not travel alone (even in their home country !). Having said that solo travel is fabulous - though there are many different dynamics in term of male/female and duration of stay - I went to the Netherlands and stayed 5 yrs ! Also solo'd across the US which was great - not so with Korea & Japan Hope you're still enjoying the North West

Hi Kristin, And one doesn't have to be 'Single' to travel alone. I'm heading to a Grand Canyon week's tour (without Kathy) on a 'Singles Tour' end of September. I don't have any problem with being by myself. Drink very little now and STILL like being by myself. Ha. I enjoy meeting almost anyone (everyone has a Story, usually pretty amazing). I have a Facebook account, but rarely use it. Just don't have any need to let others know the minutia of my life, or need to know that about others. There seems to be more tours focusing on single travel than ever before. Most cruise lines now offer Single Cabins at reduced costs. Good videos K. We're in Mexico now for a month. Thanks, til next time. Steve

Great video, Kristin. I traveled around the world at the age of 20, working odd jobs in certain locales. I must admit traveling while young was easier as roughing it just seemed challenging but fun. And you're right, traveling while solo really forces you to connect with others ---- I loved my travel experiences while traveling on such a major budget -- sleeping in hostels, pensiones, trains, homes of locals ....

Kristin, it is awesome that you are willing to share your lifestyle with us - Big Thank You Very Much. I have been an Expat for over 25 years (dual citizenship) and travel solo for 6-8 months per year. If someone asks you, what nationality are you, or where is your home? Well, it is difficult and also simple to answer: " I don't know". This is not in the context of Pro/Con, it is just as it is.

I’ve been single most of my life and haven’t travelled as much as I’d otherwise want because it would have to be solo. Almost everything you said in this video really resonated with me, Kristin. It brought back a memory from when I was in my 20s. I was traveling with a friend and we were eating at a nice restaurant with a spectacular view. Sitting nearby was a gorgeous young woman eating alone. I remember being so intrigued by her, wondering what her story was, and being super impressed that she had the guts to go there alone (although who knows, maybe her date stood her up and she was just making the best of it lol), but regardless, she was a badass, and I wanted to be more like her. This sparked something in me to strike out more on my own and not be afraid of what people might think. I was so nervous about solo travel when I first started, and I also vividly remember the awkwardness that I felt the first time I ate alone at a nice restaurant where a lot of couples were having a romantic dinner date. But over time, I've become so comfortable in my own skin, and now I truly enjoy my own company. Life is too short to sit on the sidelines and let life pass you by just because you don't have someone to travel with. The rewards FAR outweigh the difficult times, that's for sure!
