Lontong is traditional Malay food. But there are Chinese stalls selling their versions of Lontong. That's why you see Fish Cake at this stall, something not commonly use in Malay food. The colourful ice you had is called Ice Kacang (pronounced Ka Chang). The red syrup should be rose syrup. The chewy translucent thing is palm seed. Next time you should try the Sugar Cane Juice. :-)

Check out Fortune Centre at 190 Middle Road which has the most number of veg eateries (about 12) under one roof in Singapore. For hawker stalls, go to Circuit Road Hawker Centre which has the most number of veg stalls (around 11) of any hawker centre. It is the go to place for cheap eats. Many of the stalls are open in the evening and at night.

Darvid is absolutely right about Fortune Centre! It's hard to find meat eateries in there because of a famous Buddhist temple nearby.

@@LWC8 Yes, the Guan Yin temple is the most visited religious site in Singapore and that's why the Bugis area has the most vegetarian eateries in the whole of Singapore.

Lontong is compressed rice cake in a coconut tumeric gravy with cabbage/carrot/longbeans - often with fish. The Ice Kacang (shaved ice) should be eaten mixed up or a spoonful of everything. Most Asian foods are meant to be eaten a spoonful of everything possible, not each ingredient separately. The translucent fruit was an Attap Seed - a palm fruit. The Roti (bread) Prata is also called Canai in Malaysia - it is oily because it is a flaky bread (roti), like puff pastry. Most often it is eaten with lentil (dhal) curry, or fish/chicken flavoured curries. The non-oily/flaky version is a Chapati. Easier to go vegetarian with Indian food than others. Chinese vegetarian is difficult to find.

Ice kacang is a local dessert native to Malaysia and Singapore. It is actually shaved ice with syrup and different types of toppings like red beans, sweet corn, cendol etc. It is also drench in evaporated milk to give it the body.

The lontong has got dried shrimp in its broth which explains the seafood flavor. There are actually two vegetarian food stalls in Redhill Hawker Centre and also two stalls selling vegetarian snacks there. There is also a vegetarian stall (Ru Yi) at the nearby coffee shop. Two other nearby hawker centres at Bukit Merah View and Bukit Merah Central also have vegetarian stalls. But they are open only for breakfast and lunch and close after lunch. Gosh, you missed so many. Forget the ice kachang which is junk food. You should ask for the healthier hot desserts such as pulut hitam (black rice). Soy milk and soy pudding you can always ask for no sugar.

Bread (roti) has no meat. The curries are flavoured with lentil (dhal) or fish or chicken. If they add the meat, it costs more. Many times the curry is gravy without meat. They are fish styled or chicken styled. Fish is always sour. Safest to ask for "Dhal" (Lentils). Some places may have roti with separate fillings of butter, egg, fish, masala (mix veg), cheese or kaya (coconut curd). You should try roti tissue - if it is available. Ask for condensed milk to be drizzled onto it.

Great video, but as a Singaporean I feel bad because actually in hawkers, there should be a variety of vegetarian food available. Especially for Indian shops, to my knowledge, many Indians in Singapore are vegetarian. As for chinese, it's part of most Chinese religion to eat vegetarian.. Show them "素" word and they will understand. To also clarify, actually Hawker prices are more or less standardised. Because it's somewhat regulated the rentals are competitive and hence prices of Hawker food is somewhat similar despite it being in the cbd city area or in the "outskirts". If u do happen to drop by sg again I can recommend u some good vegetarian food tho, at least to a Chinese Singaporean tastebud 😂
