Why do Americans use daft words? ‘Wheel horse power’ what do they think Brake Horse Power refers to, you know that term that been around for much longer!!?

From Google… ‘BHP usually refers to the amount of power delivered at the engine output shaft of a piston engine. It is measured using an instrument called a dynamometer, which is a mechanical or electric braking device.’ BHP commonly is measured at the crank / flywheel and will always read higher than at the wheels due to transmission losses ~ 25%. So 102 is really good.

@ that’s clearly wrong, I worked for a big rally team for a number of years in engine development. The term ‘brake’ refers to at the wheel or brakes, brake horse power is what is supposed to be the power at the driven wheels. The amount of power produced by an engine at the crank is simply ‘horse power’ as the brake element is not used or valid. It doesn’t help that people have forgotten this and that American have come up with the term ‘wheel horse power’ when there was already a term to describe this 😂 An engine dynamometer that tests an engine outside of the car (so engine fixed to machine that measures power) records in Horse Power only, again as it’s out of the car and not measured at the wheels, hence not ‘Brake Horse Power’
