What do you think is the worst and best Powerstroke engine?
@vinnyhimes1190
@vinnyhimes1190 2 жыл бұрын
Worst IDI 7.3 simply because they simply can't make power.... but reliable as hell! Best, hands down the 6.7 Powerstroke. They have no design flaw issues like the older powerstrokes. Just gotta take care of that CP4!

Fell in love with my 2016 Lariat 6.7 SD until 24 weeks ago. Been at Dealer ever since. Power loss and they can't figure it out. Meticulously maintained LOF every 5K fuel filters ever 10K. Driving on freeway running out a DPF Clean cycle and just lost power like limp mode but no check engine light. The 2nd Ford Factory Service Engineer is coming to look but no ETA. Need some help here, like who or where is the best Ford 6.7 troubleshooter around Central Coast Cali.

More info truck only has 67K miles. Replaced items by dealer include Turbo, PCM #2, #1 was replaced about 30K miles . DPF, Cat pulled & cleaned because new were backordered no ETA. After latest PCM and program they say it ran great about 10 mins then back to limp mode. Here we sit waiting on Ford Engineer. At wits end.

I've owned a 7.3 powerstroke with upgraded exhaust, intake, and a few simple mods and had plenty of power. Also had a 5.9 Cummins...great engine. The thing nobody wants to talk about is this: You can see and access everything on the Cummins. Ford puts half the engine up under the dash. The 7.3 is ok, but the 6.0 and 6.4 have many major components tucked up where you struggle to reach them, meaning cab-off might be needed. You'll never be taking the cab off a Cummins.

We have a spare f550 6.4 Powerstroke with 200k on it. Completely stock. Can’t believe it’s still running. New fire trucks with Cummins and the emissions systems are crap. We start and drive them cold 2-3 miles to a call, idle…sometimes for an 30 min/hour up to 8 hours at times. Level 3 regen pumping fires. Have to go out of service to drive it hard up a hill to burn the dpf. One engine had to go through 5 manual regens. I honestly think we shouldn’t have to have emissions on these trucks.
@vinnyhimes1190
@vinnyhimes1190 2 жыл бұрын
As a fire department you can actually get a "permission slip" for lack of a better term to remove faulty emissions equipment of emergency response vehicles. You need to contact the city or county commissioner. I'm not an expert in this field, but I have received letters at the shop permitting this. I don't know all the proper legal steps, but there is a process if you decide to look into it.

Have 3 Ford diesels: 1. 1986 F-250 4x4 6.9 stock, 4:10/Gear Vender OD 4-speed 195K original - no rust, std cab: nice old dependable truck. 2. 1996 F-350 4x2 7.3 factory turbo, 3:55 5-speed (rebuilt), South Bend Clutch, Tymar air intake, Tymar cross-over oil line, 4" exhaust, no chips, 230k highway miles truck/camper - no rust, crew cab. 3. Recently acquired: 1993 F-250 4x4 Extd cab, 7.3 idi, non-turbo, 3:55/Eaton TruLoc Locker, E4OD 114k original miles, very clean overall. As we all know 'maintenance n' being nice to these older trucks pays off in the long run'. I've no interest in competing in the 5 O'clock 500 on the freeways!! All 3 putt down the road just fine from Point A to Point B, giving Yoeman service. I can do 'some' work under the hood - AND don't have to remove the cab to work under the hood!! ugh On newer trucks, I'm not able to do much of anything under the hood- excpet look! This is a prime reason I like/enjoy these 3 older Ford diesels. Best of regards to all out there...and thank you for having this discussion n' sharing of information, in all 3 Parts. Fuel additives are great, but they are not all created equal, ensure you only use fuel additives that specify they are made for Diesel Engines. Anything that says it works in diesel and gas is a no, no. We have tried many brands here at the shop over the years and we've seen the best results out of Hot Shots Secret. I run their daily diesel additive in every single tank of fuel that goes through my personal trucks.

I purchased one new Ford diesel truck,a F550 with the 7.3.Its was a beautiful truck that pulled like a 300-6.I soon learned the adage nickel and dime you to death! The experience with the only G.M. truck was worse!Constant engine issues.Blown head gasket,broken glow plug,failed fuel and injectors all before 50000 miles and their warranty wasn’t worth the paper that it was written on.I am now driving my sixth dodge Cummins.Not the best built truck,but hands down the best diesel truck on the market.Ask anyone who has owned and worked all three!

IMO if you’re talking a Hot Shot rig there’s a better option than any of the trucks mentioned here….the ultimate hotshot truck would be a 1978-1997 International S1700-1900 and 3800-4900 medium duty Cab and chassis with a DT-466 engine and overdrive 6 or 7 speed Eaton or slicer or an overdrive Allison auto with TC lockup. If you’re going non CDL they had good hydro boost hydraulic disc brakes on later models and then of course if you’re going CDL then air brakes are a huge advantage for simplicity, longevity and ease of maintenane. They even made factory 4x4 converted models if you HAD to have it but most hot shotters won’t need it. Weight wise with a short wheelbase and simple 8-10’ western hauler 5th wheel type bed you’ll be close in weight to a loaded modern pickup…really close. They made a factory crew cab version but you could also add a small sleeper berth to a single cab easily to get around the rest time stuff, although the factory 4 door would be ideal. The mechanical DT-466 uses a Bosch P pump just like a 12 valve and it’s easily tweaked to deliver more fuel and with an ATA aftercooler, fuel tweaks and a better turbo you’ll make 400 whp reliably no problem. And the biggest benefit is that DT-466 is a wet-sleeve engine meaning it uses liners and can actually be rebuilt several times, dozens of times if you are proactive about inframes. What more could you ask for? 19.5 tires, brakes as strong as any 550 class truck out there today, bulletproof I beam front axle and spring suspension, a tilt hood (MAJOR bonus for engine work and front end maintenance)

True 05 Ram 2500 Slt short bed 4 door crew. UNICORN has 5.9 HO, Mopar manual 6, manual xfer case, North American front end. Rocker pannells and bed has more rust than paint. My oldest daughter just turned 21 and can't remember me ever driving anything else. I must agree drive what you can afford and this one has been paid for for over 15 years. I did the delete at about that time with 5" from the turbo out and a magnaflo muffler about the size of 2 #10 cans and an old Edge CS that hasn't been unplugged since it was installed. Other than about a dozen #4 injector lines just had the first major issue at 300k. Lift pump went out and starved the injectors. Gonna be 4-5 grand well spent. I ll let you know when it hits 500,000. I appreciate the honest information, unbiased and to the point. Y'all have a great day from Pyr0 Dave in KC.

Vinny , it's great to hear what you say. You made a very good point about the 6.4 it is an absolute Beast by doing a simple delete and actually right dependable if it's done early on. Mine was originally bought to pull and what I got it to do. Pulling 15 to 17k I get 17 MPG and can walk away from other newer trucks with much lighter loads . Guess that I got lucky and got one of the unicorn's but I do know to monitor everything . Plan to keep it around as long as possible and don't be surprised if I show up just to say hello because I'm only a couple hours drive away.

6.0’s don’t just blow head gaskets. Usually it’s the egr cooler that internally leaks putting coolant into the combustion chamber. Coolant/water can’t compress so it causes super high cylinder pressure=blown head gasket. If you delete the cooler or upgrade to a BPD, and don’t run a crazy hot tune your head gaskets will be fine. I personally know two guys with 6.0’s: one with over 400k miles and the other just hit 1M. They’re good if you know how to use them. I wish I can post pics because I have the mileage pics

I had a 2010 and I loved it, but the biggest issue with it was international. Around that time ford and navistar were in major lawsuits with each other. At the time ford was refusing to pay for the engines, because of the warranty claims on the 6.0. International cut so many corners on that engine as a result. Renault also was still involved in the emissions designs, like the 6.0. The maxforce 7 doesn’t have the same problems and the powerstroke engine.

Theres a lot of talk about emissions recently, why hasnt anyone had a REAL talk about how one can MANUALLY regen your truck to clear out your DPF parked at your own home!! No need to be a HotShot, no need to tow, no need to drive for an hour full speed!!?? This will put an END to the emissions dilema, deleting, tunning, compliance, etc.. Listener beware!
@TheDieselPodcast
@TheDieselPodcast 2 жыл бұрын
How does a manual regen pertain to compliance and tuning? Some of our emission talks cover the process and documentation needed to sell 49 or 50 state legal products. These episodes are more about data, testing costs, and other things pertaining to the process of legally altering the vehicle. Also, a manual regen doesn’t address the emission dilemma of the Clean Air Act interpretation, enforcement, sentencing, fines, classification of “race” vehicles, etc. We do understand your point about a manual regen for trucks that may not tow, make long trips, etc. And how that can “save” the costs associated with a clogged DPF. But we don’t see how that addresses CARB/EPA testing processes, avoiding an RFI from the EPA or aftermarket tuning, turbos, and fuel systems.

Who ever did all the upgrades well they they where bread tie class wiring knuckleheads! They even added backup sensors only problem was they only connected one wire on each one . The whole truck had custom stuff added that didn’t work! The second owners had tried to fix some of it but just couldn’t figure a lot of it out. I got it cheap knowing full well these motors had issues. I didn’t know about the lift pump though thats scary for sure!

New to the diesel owners club. I’ve been driving diesel for over a decade, have my own opinions between the brands. Driven nearly all of them between the years 2000 and today. So I went out and bought a 2022 Ram 3500 high output with the aisin, because that’s what’s in my company Ram 5500 and it’s held up better than any of the F550s I had before did. Including the 10 speeds. Speaking of that, if you have a ford 6.7 with the 10 speed you need to keep an eye on the transmission temps. I was hitting 260 on the interstate towing nothing. In the city I was seeing 240. Could be normal? I didn’t think so. Also dented the hell out of the hood by slightly leaning on it while washing the windshield. So don’t do that either

I cut my teeth with the 6.9 and 7.3 IDIs from the 1980s, and drove them in the 1990s for a wrecker service. Turned wrenches on the and a Powerstroke later on, loved them. Later worked at an RV Dealership in 1999 while going through a LEO academy. The shop trucks we had was a 5.9 Gen 1, a 1993 IDI Ford and a 1997 Powerstroke. That Gen 1 was a complete dog, that IDI ran well but that 7.3 Powerstroke had some serious torgue. It had some Banks goodies on it. Got to learn more about all three as each one had their own set of issues. Yea, some of the Cummins guys probably just got triggered, but back in the day those 7.3s Powerstrokes were sweet. But then...then International took a went full potato with the 6.0s and 6.4s. Man those were the days though. Things have certainly gotten better over time. Yea, Cummins, Duramax, Powerstroke: all potentially doo-doo. In the military, aside from the 8V92s and Series 60 Detroits, I got to play with the 6.2 naturally aspirated and 6.5 turboed Humvees. Pretty much zero Duramax experience. Currently drive Freightliners with the D13s and previously DD15s (OTR) after leaving law enforcement. I would still take one of those turds in a heartbeat. 2024 I WILL own my first diesel...more to come!

My 2009 6.4 has just shy of 100k on it. It pretty much always has a trailer behind it (wakeboat, camper, etc). It has been crazy flawless - basically just oil changes and fuel filters so far. The low miles are due to the fact that I just drive it when I need a truck. My daily is an SUV. The emissions were "fixed" at 30k (when I bought it). I am nervous about the HPFP. Is a FASS my best (only?) protection from it?

Having been around Fords, Dodges and GMs; and currently a CMV driver, I would like to see an episode devoted to Water Methanol Injection. In the very near future I am going to purchase my first diesel pick-up, despite being around and driving them since I was a teenager back in the 80s. So perhaps water methanol is something worth looking into, and yes I would order it from Vinny..

I’m a first time diesel owner and i picked up a 1 owner 99 SD crew cab 7.3 with only 93k mikes she is a beautiful truck, I have owned it 3 years now and it now has 160k on it and had no issues and I constantly get told by everybody how they don’t make any power and I need to put a chip in it and tune it bla bla bla and I like what Vinny said about it’s never really going to make power but it’s a reliable as hell truck and that’s why I got it, it was very interesting to hear Vinny’s opinion on keeping it reliable by dropping the tank and cleaning the pick up filters i hadnt heard about that issue before and I’m wondering if that’s some thing I need to have done and wondering what it would cost to have a shop drop the tank and clean the filters in the pick up you mentioned? Or do I need to have that done at only 160,000?

On 7.3 powerstroke use a fuel pressure gauge. That will save your injectors. I also think All diesel engines can benefit from a oil bypass filter kit especially if your engine has egr on it. As far as Ford putting the DEF filler neck by the fuel filler neck have a small blue cap like most tractors and off road equipment does.

So funny u guys mentioned the 6.4 I'm not a Ford guy so at the time I had a 20 denali dually (100k truck) and I was looking for a used diesel and found this 6.4 power stroke that I just really liked the way it looked and it was a Harley Edition with a very nice interior. Anyways, I hit up a friend who runs a bullet proofed 6.0 a ND he was like u know how bad the 6.0 sucks... the 6.4 is worse. Anyways I didn't buy it. But little story I thought was contributing to the segment

What’s crazy to me is guys buying 15 year old diesels and sending them to shops to get work done. Then complain about how much money they’ve spent and call the truck a POS. If you want a daily that doesn’t need upkeep buy a civic. Or at least a new diesel with a warranty

@vinnyhimes1190 What is the 5-600 hp recipe you guys do for the 7.3? You mention it's super expensive, so I'm wondering how you guys are doing it. In my experience, hybrid injectors, a drop in KC turbo and a Hydra with tunes for the setup should get you there, although probably not 600. Now, a fuel system is smart, but I actually would hold 45 psi with only a bowl retain 4-line feed. That was set at 65, so it was an issue, but not harming. Apparently a good stock HPOP. I should add this is on a forged rod SD.

One thing to help on a 7.3 get your exhaust back pressure correct, dose wanders to that 7.3. Did a boost pressure not exhaust. But you can’t blow full boost to the switch it has to be cut down, you can play with it to get it correct, you will be like wow when you get it right.

@tombentley887
@tombentley887 2 жыл бұрын
@@iansteward4708 on the 7.3 you have an exhaust back pressure reading in the computer the sensor / switch is in the front of the 7.3 , pull the switch out of the exhaust, plug the exhaust. Get a fitting to screw the switch into, the line is boost pressure not vacuum to the map sensor. Put a boost fooler before the pressure switch. Then put the line from the switch back to the map sensor. Adjust the boost fooler to give a lower reading to switch and map sensor a gauge to read pressure is a good thing. The map sensor on a 97 and older is setup for 15 psi , the newer 7.3 is setup for 18 to 20 psi . When you over pressure the map sensor it tells the computer to give less fuel. Same thing with the exhaust back pressure to much exhaust pressure tells the computer to give less fuel. The computer of older 7.3s are very stupid, not enough pressure to exhaust or to the map sensor will not give more fuel ether. If you get your pressures good for what the computer is wanting you have very good running 7.3. Hope this helps.
