With a build intended to make big power we need to get very serious about sealing in the power, and to do that we need to use solid copper head gaskets and fire rings. It's a pretty involved procedure, so grab a cold on and check out what's involved.
Street Machine Carnage is all about having fun with cars. Sometimes it's serious performance, sometimes it's crazy fun, but it always interesting and done on a budget.

@@STREETMACHINETV The issue comes when you torque it. Would be great if there was a anaerobic type or spray type sealant you could use. Pity they don't make the tie bars where you could at least tighten up one side. Would make installing them easy on so many cars without lifting heads....Love that lil Kinchrome spanner torque wrench :)

Faaarrrkkk what a messy job. Years ago I used to run a methanol Holden 6 with a copper head gasket and I just used Copper gasket spray and then a few years later I used Hylomar spray and never had a leak. I suppose it wasn’t receiving the boost that your engine is going to get. Good luck.

One thing u should know about sealant is that when u have 2 flat mating surfaces it requires very litte sealant to cover everything

Yes, and when you are sealing a head to a block with copper gaskets and fire rings you need the sealant to fill every little nook and cranny, this job is a lot different to bolting a timing cover to the front of your Yaris bloke

I reckon I used less sealant when I rebuilt my boat. That said I have never used a 3Bond sealant that wasn't up to task. It also might be worth putting a filter sock in the top radiator hose. Dont want nuggets of cured sealant blocking up your radiator.

Bloody hell scotty i would have ended uppercutting myself with those washers and bolts what a mess around . If i ever had the money for a engine like this i would be paying a engine builder after watching this video so thanks for this build video and the forewarning . Another top build video . I know you wouldn't waste your time, but i like going to the channel of people who complain about your videos and they either have no videos or the videos they do have are absolutely rubbish . Keep up the great work .

I bought one a few years ago - I've not used it for car applications, but I've done a lot of building & decorating work with it, and it's fantastic - saves a strained wrist, and also controls the flow a lot better than a manual gun (actually has an adjustment for flow, and as soon as you let go, it backs off slightly so you don't get as much ooze waste as with the manual release on most manual guns). Only down side with it is it won't take the very long canisters (specifically of liquid nails) - they are just a bit too long - so you have to buy the slightly smaller ones which is a bit less economic. Not sure if Ryobi has updated it to make it a bit longer - but they should.

If you want to preserve your sealant, you can put some gladwrap between the noozle and best trick is putting the cartridge into a ziplock bag. The ziplock bag works real well. For those small tubes of sealant you have sitting the toolbox that always go off, those small ziplocks work a treat.
@Beer_Dad1975
@Beer_Dad1975 4 ай бұрын
Great tip! I've been using both gladwrap & zip lock bags for paint brushes and rollers for years but never considered using them on tubes of glue and sealant! I'll definitely try it out - better than stuffing an old nail in the end which is what I normally do! 😀

Gees Scotty, I'm kinda freaked out by all the goop on the decks... there must be a spray on alternative you could apply to the gaskets for a cleaner install without the rush to get the excess goop squeezed out of the way... I have used aluminium boiler paint very successfully on copper head gaskets, including on diesels. 2 coats on the gaskets with a small spray gun before the heads go on. Hylomar or copper coat would also work, as it is only coolant you are trying to seal in. I hope you never need them mate, but I reckon you should keep spare gaskets on hand for just in case, because I think by the time the goop lets go of those ones, they will be ready for the bin. Keep up the good work mate.

@builds_on_a_budget4111
@builds_on_a_budget4111 4 ай бұрын
Each to their own, but when doing copper gaskets I always goop the gasket before putting it on, I also dont use nearly as much sealant. One last note is I put the 2 studs in place where the dowels are and I lube and assemble the rest of the studs so when the head is on I just drop them down and its much quicker and easier process to do it.

I think more to do with differences in thickness between fire rings and gasket. Fire ring sealing is primary.
@ryanworkman5229
@ryanworkman5229 4 ай бұрын
I tend to agree with that, I would expect the fire rings, the grooves in the deck and the gasket thickness would have been worked out together so the gasket crush gave the correct crush to seal the fire rings. If they really wanted to so it was easier they could use whatever gasket material they wanted for the gaskets, the fire rings hold in the boost, the gaskets only need to deal with coolant.

When I’m putting on heads I put the motor at 45 degree angle so the head surface is parallel to the ground, easier to line stuff up and gasket won’t move, heads can’t slip off dowels and fall

@jamiekaye3680
@jamiekaye3680 4 ай бұрын
Excess sealant maybe a good thing in some cases, but not in the automotive world, it gets into and blocks water jackets, blocks oil galleries,squeezes into fire rings and gives a path to weakness, the same goes for head adhesion, generally a light smear, similar to what a wipe of bearing blue would look like, is sufficient and stronger as it binds the part to the part, not goo to goo or part to goo, anyway good luck as effort deserves reward, so go get your medal.
