I agree 100%. As a swim coach it frustrates me seeing so many fast (male) high school swimmers who can’t do 10 pull ups or squat 135. The vast majority of swim coaches do not emphasize any real strength training to their swimmers. A good swim coach does not equal a good strength and conditioning coach. I believe you are correct. Most swimmers at high school and club level are not properly trained for weight training exercises. Most swim coaches especially at club and high school level are not certified by a National Strength and Conditioning Association. They do not know how to coach weight training exercises or write workouts.

Any ideas for kettlebell workouts for swimmers. I LOVE kettlebells and do them exclusively on my non-swim days. On swim days I do a 30 minute EMOM of a clean + 4 hang power cleans.

Swimmers are prone to shoulder injuries, and some youngers have shoulder instabilities because they swim a lot and not strengthen enough. I guess I would be very careful with these overhead lifts.

Wow These lifts Will help me so much.. I’m currently pretty strong but i just can’t wait to increase my speed aswell so that i can increase my vertical etc. Overheadpress 200Lbs, Squat 365,Deadlift 550, Benchpress 255 What would you say are some optimal strength goals in the gym for swimmers? Those all look to be good. We recommend your power clean to be at least bodyweight, snatch at 80% of bodyweight, bench at least bodyweight, squat at bodyweight for 6 to 10 reps. Hope that helps 💪

What about for water polo players? What workouts would you recommend?

I think for water polo players it would be more about raw strength mixed with endurance. Swimmers would be more hypertrophy and endurance. Basically for water polo players you would do raw compound movements rather than more complex movements. Do them 4x per exercise with 2x being 20 reps of a light weight exercise and 2x being 7-8 of the heaviest you can handle within those ranges.

You should go go more reps than weight and to combat stiffness you should do stretching after your workout but only stretch when your muscles are warm (stretching cold muscles can lead to injury like tearing the muscle)

Definitely!! Kicking is vital for swimming. When I focused on kick I broke the minute for 100 freestyle

Legs are extremely important. They act as the propulsive force allowing you to swim at hull speed, by keeping your hips high, thus reducing drag in the water
