Stretch Tires - Are they Good Or Bad?

Are stretched tires safe or dangerous?

Thank you so much for the informative video. I am putting some 16 inch xxr 527 wheels soon on my modified Toyota Probox (used for daily driving and a occasional fast driving on long distance trips). Enjoying the video but I have a question. How can tyre width affect body roll? Surely that is dependent on shock and spring rates / combinations.

Thank you. ✌️ It comes down to the tyre profile and sidewall rigidity on the width of rim used. Some brands and types of tyres have thicker sidewalls(semis/slicks) but tyre profile height will be the main factor depending on the width of the rim. The larger the rim is to the tyre, the more rounded and stretched the side profile becomes making it tense. A tyre with decent profile on a same width rim has more give and will bubble. It can roll on itself helping to create bodyroll. Your right, suspension and spring rates would also factor into this!

I assume stretched tires wouldn’t be so good for touge/canyon running right?

Does depend on the amount but by running stretch you do lose tyre surface area and max grip potential. It can change handling characteristics also.

I might end up doing this on my Cappuccino, but it's more about getting the tire to clear the fender with extremely limited wheel options. For some reason Suzuki made the Cappuccino (a ~700kg/1580lb car) with 4*1114.3 lugs, and very few people make 15 or 16" wheels that aren't at least 6.5" wide. A 6.5" wheel in the correct offset should fit without hitting the shock, but might poke out a bit, so I'll need a narrower tire so it doesn't rub.

thats understandable! what's the usual wheel size for a cappuccino, 13"s?

@@LOKISX Stock is 14". I'd like to run 15's. 16's will fit but with very thin tires. I might try and swap on some stock S13 wheels and see if they fit with a smaller tire :p

Actually stretched tyres can also be traced back to west coast America in the 70's and maybe earlier too. Lowriders (big American cars like Impalas with hydraulics) would stretch tyres because it would give a lower profile and would still allow the cars to turn when the hydraulics are slammed down.
